The goal of his research is to develop realistic numerical simulations to model the variable gamma-ray emission of luminous blazars, powerful relativistic jets emanating from the vicinity of the supermassive black holes found in the centers of active galaxies.

4 GES alumni in current Chesapeake Conservation Corps cohort

<Tagline>4 GES alumni in Chesapeake Conservation Corps (CCC)</Tagline>

This year (2016-2017), four of our recent graduates are currently working as Chesapeake Conservation Corps members, each with a placement in a different organization working throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed. More details on their specific CCC postings is provided below. We have had several other GES alum be part of this wonderful program in the past, including Alexa White. We're proud of our GES alumni!

(From left-to-right: Rachel Denby, Ellen Woytowitz, Jake Leizear, Corinne Griffith)

Rachel Denby is at MD DNR in the Monitoring and
Non-Tidal Assessment Division. As part of her job, Rachel is a crew member that
assists with the Maryland Biological Stream Survey (MBSS), all over the state.
Through MBSS, they collect data on stream biota (mostly fish), water and
physical habitat quality, and geomorphology. Rachel also assists with mussel
surveys that take place largely in Harford County and with processing
macroinvertebrates with microscopes. During her CCC year, she will also focus
on restoring the Blackbanded Sunfish in Maryland, an endangered fish, by
developing partnerships and assisting with stream data entry, analysis,
    interpretation, and presentation.

Ellen Woytowitz will provide support
for the USGS MD-DE-DC Water Science Center with the Baltimore Urban Waters
Partnership (BUWP), a federal initiative that aims to reconnect urban
communities to their waterways. Her capstone project will determine if a
relationship exists in the Gwynns Falls watershed between water quality
constituents, specifically bacteria and total suspended solids, and proposed factors
of influence including climate, land use, sewer overflows, infrastructure
repairs, Best Management Practices (BMPs), and socio-economics &
demographics. This analysis will help BUWP stakeholders determine if
investments in restoration and compliance for stormwater permits, sewer
overflow consent decrees, and Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) have produced
desired improvements in water quality. Additionally, Ellen will assist with
fieldwork and data processing for the Baltimore Ecosystem Study (BES) Long-Term
Ecological Research (LTER) and Baltimore Streamflow Gage Network and Water
Quality Real-Time Networks in greater Baltimore and D.C.

Jake Leizear will work with the Chesapeake Conservancy for the next year, focusing
on improving access to green spaces and the Patapsco River in Baltimore and
raising awareness of and engagement in the Greater Baltimore Wilderness
Coalition. Through this Coalition, the Chesapeake Conservancy works with
partners such as the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and Baltimore City
Department of Recreation and Parks to advance urban wildlife conservation,
public access, and environmental opportunities in Baltimore.

Corinne
Griffith is working with the Prince Georges County Public Schools, over at the Schmidt Outdoor Education Center. Her role is to facilitate and lead school groups in a unique outdoor education experience. This includes taking children out into the elements and educating them on a diversity of topics, including: stream ecology, forest ecology, and pollination. She is a specialist in the first grade program, but also helps across grade levels.

Upcoming Joint Legislation on Elections and Appeals

<Tagline>New Legislation is Expected to Pass by the End of the Month</Tagline>

In response to last year’s election season, the SGA is working to prevent identical situations like it in the future. SGA Senators Evan Leiter-Mason and Collin Sullivan have been working on amending implementing two major pieces of legislation to ensure a successful election season this year.

A Synopsis of Changes to the Election Policy

Fixes the Board to 7 members, and requires that 2 members each by appointed by the Election Board Chair, the Speaker of the Senate, and the Chair of the Finance Board

Establishes the duties of the Election Board Chair to publicize the election and candidates, report complaints to the Election Board and investigate them, maintain a shared email account, and publicize sanctions

Requires the Election Board to exercise due process in its investigations and binds the Election Board to an evidence standard of “more likely than not”

Requires the Election Board to vote and deliberate in person, except when voting to either dismiss a complaint or open an official investigation. In those cases, the Election Board is permitted to utilize official UMBC email

Bans in-person campaigning at the Shady Grove satellite campus

Explicitly requires the Election Board Chair to certify election results

Why the Election Policy is Being Amended

Helps prevent election fraud from either candidates or the Election Board

Makes SGA more accountable by providing clearer language throughout the policy

Identifies key problems throughout the past several years during the Election Season.

A Synopsis of Implementation of the Appeal Board

A new Board that will hear any cases where one party feels another party has violated any SGA Guiding Document

Consists of 5 voting members: one member from each charter organization on campus - (seb), The Retriever, RSA, and 2 members nominated by the President and confirmed with Joint Legislation

The Convener is an individual determined by the Director of Student Life who is a faculty or staff member from The Division of Student Affairs. The Convener will only call the Board to meet, and act as a contact for petitions, and will have no voting rights on the Board.

Petitions submitted to the Convener is what will call the Board to meet. A petition must be signed by either 5% of the undergraduate population, or a petition signed by 7 sitting elected SGA Officials.

The Board will hear both sides of any particular case and make a final ruling. Their final decision will stand

Why the Board is Being Established

Allows for SGA to handle charges and accusations in-house; we will no longer need a last minute bail-out from administrators

A completely new system that is unlike Supreme Courts used across the nation that are plagued with corruption

This Board would have enabled SGA to internally resolve the problems from last year’s election

Day One: Enduring Love

Psalm 136: 1, 23-24 - “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever. He remembered us in our low estate. His love endures forever. And freed us from our enemies. His love endures forever.”

“Diamonds are forever” - at least that’s what the jewelry industry hopes enamored couples everywhere will believe. Unfortunately, a diamond often outlasts the marriage it was meant to symbolize. Human love is not flawless.

So where can you find flawless and eternal love? Psalm 136 asserts repeatedly that God’s love endures forever. This song served as an anthem or pledge of mutual love between God and his people. Old Testament priests sang the first phrase in these verses while the congregation answered with the refrain: “His love endures forever.” It was much like an exchange of wedding vows between God and his bride, the nation of Israel (Isaiah 62:5).

God desires the closeness of such a relationship with each of us for eternity. And his love lasts beyond a lifetime. Not only does God offer us enduring love, he also extends to us endearing love, a strong affection that lifts one higher or increases the value of the one beloved. Enduring speaks of the quantity of God’s love while endearing portrays the quality. The psalmist says that God “remembered us in our low estate” (v 23). We are nothing; but God loved us before we were lovely. We are his diamonds in the rough.

In the rough, a diamond looks like a common pebble. The stone must undergo a finishing process to bring out its full radiance. It is then held against a large grinding wheel to cut and polish the stone. Many meticulous hours are spent perfecting it.

Like the nation of Israel, God has lifted you out of the rubble of a worthless life. He is polishing and chiseling you into a jewel of great beauty. You are his diamond. You are his bride being prepared for the bridegroom. And his love endures forever.
(From the NIV Women’s Devotional Bible.)

Today let’s worship God and give thanks to him for his enduring, endearing love for us.

Not Pig-Like Creature Spotted at Pig Pen Pond

Rumors of an unidentified creature lurk around campus and nobody can seem to get their stories straight. Late one eerie Saturday night on campus, freshmen Lance and Margaret were feeling spooked by the lack of students in their residence hall so they decided to go exploring around campus. Mistake One. Students should never leave the comfort of their rooms when they do not need to. Then as they were walking around the circle, they found a long wooden bridge. Mistake Two. To be fair, it looked relatively well-lit but wandering anywhere near the edges of campus seems dangerous. There could be some police scoping out for people with tree in the trees. There could be seemingly harmless deer ready to take you out with a stomp. Or maybe there could be some remnant chicken bones that eerily look as big as actual human baby bones. Either way, they shouldn’t have traversed into the unknown on such a strangely warm evening.

This creature sighting only occurred that night as a graduate student drove through campus to teach himself how to use a traffic circle. He saw something vaguely bear-shaped run across his path, but it wasn’t as hairy as bears normally are. This is strange because Lance and Margaret have vastly different ideas of what this creature could be. Lance believes it’s some kind of goat-thing, taking a chapter from the goat man mysteries. Margaret swore it was small and had a long tail but also long ears. And crawled like a monkey but had scales instead -- like a swamp monster. Although the accounts of the three animals were all terribly different, they could all agree that it wasn’t pig-like... even though they all said it was a monster at Pig Pen Pond. So the question now is why is the pond called Pig Pen Pond if there aren’t any pig monsters guarding it? Why isn’t it called Hairless Bear pond? Maybe that grad student just saw some kid streaking… Maybe there’s still a mysterious pig monster that lives there that still needs to be uncovered… Maybe you could go searching for it tonight…

Multi-relational data, like knowledge graphs, are generated from multiple data sources by extracting entities and their relationships. We often want to include inferred, implicit or likely relationships that are not explicitly stated, which can be viewed as link-prediction in a graph. Tensor decomposition models have been shown to produce state-of-the-art results in link-prediction tasks. We describe a simple but novel extension to an existing tensor decomposition model to predict missing links using similarity among tensor slices, as opposed to an existing tensor decomposition models which assumes each slice to contribute equally in predicting links. Our extended model performs better than the original tensor decomposition and the non-negative tensor decomposition variant of it in an evaluation on several datasets.

Berman Recognized for Exemplary Service and Scholarship

On November 1, the UMBC community celebrated faculty who have earned exemplary recognition as fellows by their professional associations and societies. Designation as a fellow is one of the top honors an academic can earn, recognizing a career of accomplishment, often decades in the making. Nearly 50 UMBC faculty members—about 14 percent of the university’s tenure-track faculty—have received this high distinction in their fields, and the number is growing quickly across all three UMBC colleges. Our own Jessica Berman, Professor of English and Director of the Dresher Center for the Humanities, received praise for her editorial work on the Modernist Latitudes book series (Columbia University Press) and service to the board of the American Comparative Literature Association. The English Department would like to extend its congratulations on this stellar accomplishment and the wonderful work that Dr. Berman always continues to do.
