UMBC men’s basketball prepares for new, fast paced offense

It was another rough season for the UMBC men’s basketball team in 2015-16. For the seventh consecutive season, the Retrievers failed to reach 10 wins, finishing with a 7-25 record. This year, new head coach Ryan Odom looks to reverse the trend and help secure the first winning season for UMBC since 2007-08.

Prior to his hiring, Odom coached at Division II school Lenoir-Ryne University. Under Odom, the Bears improved from 8-18 in 2014-15 to 21-10 last year. In 11 of the Bears wins, the team scored at least 90 points. For comparison, UMBC scored 90 or more in just two games overall last year. Odom’s LRU team relied heavily on the three-point shot. A season ago, the Bears led all Division II schools in three-pointers made per game.

“[Shooting the three] will be an emphasis for us this season”, Odom said. His Lenoir-Ryne team also finished in the top ten in D-II in three-point attempts (934) and three-point percentage (41.1). Coach Odom hopes to bring that same level of scoring to UMBC.

Three point shooting was one of the problem areas for UMBC a season ago. The Retrievers were tied for 185th in the country in three-point attempts (652). They also finished 246th in three-point percentage (33.1).

Among the other issues for the Retrievers, defense, rebounding and turnovers. UMBC ranked second to last in the America East Conference in field goal percentage allowed (49.6), and last in three point percentage allowed (38).

The Retrievers ranked 332nd in the country in points allowed per game (80.6). UMBC also ranked 326th in rebounds per game. The rebounding and defense may be a little problematic for the Retrievers given the lack of size on the team.

The pieces certainly seem to be in place for coach Odom’s faster pace system. Of the 16 players on the roster, 13 are guards, although one is a “swingman” (a player that can play guard or forward). Only three players are 6’9″ or taller, which gives the time “some quickness,” as Odom put it.

UMBC houses several players that should fit in well with another year under their belt. Virginia Commonwealth University transfer Jairus Lyles returns for his first full season in the gold and black. The Silver Spring native debuted on Dec. 19, 2015 against Howard University and started a streak of 10 straight games scoring in double figures.

Lyles only had two games where he did not score at least 10 points. In 21 games, Lyles averaged 23 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. Lyles also finished with a .472/.342/.698 shooting line and a 24.9 player efficiency rating (PER, 15 is the national average).

Junior guard Rodney Elliott is projected to join Lyles in the starting backcourt. The Baltimore native lowered his turnovers per game from his freshman season (2.7 from 3.6) while maintaining his assist per game (3.6). Elliott also averaged 12.8 points per game with a .402/.298/.814 shooting line.

Junior forward Will Darley looks to help the Retrievers space the floor. The Timonium native averaged 11.9 PPG and led the team in three-point percentage (43.4).

Sophomore Joe Sherburne hopes for more consistency this year. The forward from Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin started off strong, averaging 14.8 PPG and shooting 38 percent from downtown. However, Sherburne struggled in the final 20 contests. In that span, Sherburne averaged 7.9 PPG and made only 31 percent of his threes.

The Retrievers also added four new players to bolster the depth chart, particularly at guard. “We feel good about the guys we brought in,” Odom said.

Wheeling, West Virginia native David Park was a former McDonalds All-American candidate. Park averaged 15 points and 7.9 boards during his high school career. At 6’5″, Park is one of the lankier guards on the team. Coach Odom added another 6’5″ guard in Bridgeport, Connecticut native Arkel Lamar.

Junior college transfer K.J. Maura comes to UMBC after putting up tremendous numbers at the College of Central Florida. Maura led all of the junior college league in assists per game (9.6). For comparison, UMBC’s entire team averaged 12.3 dimes in 2015-16. Maura’s play also earned him JUCO All-American honors and his passing and shooting ability (.475/.446/.783) will benefit the Retrievers in the fast break.

Hooksett, N.H native Max Curran is one of three forwards on the team. Coach Odom praised Curran’s versatility and ability to stretch the defense with the three. Curran averaged 19.2 points and eight rebounds per game during his senior year at Pembroke Academy.

The preseason coaches polls in the AEC has the Retrievers slated to finish sixth in the conference. However, there is room for improvement for the Retrievers. The team may struggle against larger teams, but this guard heavy rotation has a chance to put plenty points on the board.

UMBC steps into virtual reality

UMBC’s new virtual reality lab has finally made its debut. The π² Immersive Hybrid Reality Lab, as it is officially called, opened its doors on Oct. 14 at the Information Technology/Engineering Building for the use of faculty and students, allowing for the exploration of multiple disciplines with almost 180 degrees of LCD screens.

Over 30 faculty members across the UMBC community contributed to the proposal to the National Science Foundation. The lab was funded by a $360,000 grant from the NSF, known as the Major Research Infrastructure Award. The receiving group of five professors was led mainly by Jian Chen, Ph.D., an assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science at UMBC, who was also responsible for bringing the initial idea to Karl Steiner, Ph.D., vice president of research.

The lab is much more than a collection of screens, according to Steiner. It is a “highly interactive space that facilitates collaborations by allowing researchers and students to immerse themselves in very complex data,” he said. In short, it allows for researchers to visually interact with data in ways that have never been possible before.

The room, measuring about 15 by 20 feet, features an expansive curve of LCD screens, effectively creating an entirely virtual environment. Because of its body-centric computer to user interaction, users are able to fully interact with the environment by using 3D glasses (which have sensors attached to them) and operating handheld controls. This interaction allows for an immersive experience, in which the user can actively control the data by manipulating the space around them in six degrees of motion: up and down, left and right, forward and backward, (tilting) back and forth, swiveling and pivoting.

In an interview with WMAR Baltimore, Chen further explained how the lab can trick the user. While users may believe they are actively moving, they are actually quite still; the brain is simply tricked into thinking the body fully in motion in the virtual world, even though users remain mostly stationary. “There is some disorientation,” said Steiner in the same interview.

The π² Lab is yet another unique aspect of the UMBC technological community and according to Steiner, a cornerstone in the university’s growing and unique capability in 3D imaging and visualization. UMBC students and faculty are already able to scan large objects (or even people) at the 3D Scanning Lab and produce 3D objects in the maker lab, but now they can go further and explore virtual worlds in the Hybrid Reality Lab.

Designed to completely immerse the user in virtual reality, the lab can be utilized for research and beyond, breaching multiple areas of study such as neurobiology, biomedicine, engineering, physics, meteorology, astronomy, design and many more. While there are other immersive virtual reality labs out there, UMBC’s π² Lab is one of the most advanced in the entire Mid-Atlantic Region, allowing for much more complex data analysis and visualizations and incredible advancements in research across disciplines.

Tips to help you land an internship!

Landing an internship is hard. I’ve poured hours into writing cover letters, perfecting writing samples, and tweaking my resume for so many of the internships I’ve applied for. I’ve probably applied to 20 different internships over the past two years, and I’ve only actually ever had 2 of them, so you can imagine how much time and effort went into each and every single one of those applications.

I found that starting the internship search was probably the hardest part of the process. For me, writing a resume from scratch and learning how to structure a cover letter were the most difficult tasks to tackle. I had no idea where to begin. Then I’d start stressing out about how I was never going to get an internship because all of my professional documents were horrible, and that led me down the dark path of “I’m never going to get into law school.”

It’s the never ending cycle of “I won’t ever get a job because I have no experience, and I have no experience because I have no job” that demotivated me from starting the process. But once I got rid of that misconception, things got a little easier. Employers know that we are college students with a million different responsibilities.

So how do you get started?

Create a resume- a task that’s easier said than done. Check out the Career Center’s website for a number of different tips that can help you complete your resume. From resume do’s and don’ts, to formatting and layout advice, you can find everything you need to start your resume on the website. After you’re done, come to the Career Center during drop-in hours (2-4 PM M-F, Math and Psych 201, and 6-8 PM Tu, Th, the Library’s Writing Center) to get your resume reviewed.

Start your search for internships and jobs. UMBCWorks is a great place to find different job postings, but if you’re not ready to go right into the search, check out this link to help you get started. Keep in mind that your resume, and any other document you submit with your application, should be specifically tailored to the position that you’re applying for. Pick and choose what is relevant!

Do your research. Not only on the companies that you’ve searched for online, but check out the Career Center’s calendar to see all of the different employers that are specifically coming to campus just to interact with UMBC students. These are great opportunities for you to get your foot in the door.

I know that trying to find an internship is scary, but if you put in the preparation and the time necessary to have a successful experience, you’ll see that it’s a lot easier than you may have thought.

They evaluated this sensor by studying the interactions between the FK506-binding protein (FKBP) and the FKBP12-rapamycin binding (FRB) domain in the presence of various small molecules such as rapamycin. FKBP bound rapamycin forms complexes with the FRB domain of mTOR, which is an essential regulator of cell growth and survival.

Looking for a Career in Education?

  <Tagline>Become an Urban Teachers Resident!</Tagline>

Change the Lives of Thousands While Changing Your Own.

Join Urban Teachers in Baltimore, Dallas/Fort Worth or Washington, DC

Urban Teachers is transforming the way people are prepared for a career in teaching. Through hands-on training, coaching and peer supports, we give teachers the skills they need to improve outcomes for students in high-need communities. By doing so, our teachers are changing the lives of the students, families and communities they serve, as well their own.

Urban Teachers is now taking applications for our Baltimore, Dallas/Fort Worth and Washington, DC Corps for the 2016-17 school year, with placement in mid- to late June 2017. Our recruitment process is selective. While there is no restriction on undergraduate or graduate major, we look for applicants who have exhibited academic excellence by maintaining a 3.0 GPA or higher, who gravitate to big challenges and have experience working with children. Urban Teachers participants are part of an unprecedented commitment to student performance: only those who demonstrate effective teaching practice, student learning gains and growth mindset/professionalism are recommended for certification (general and special education) and complete the full four-year program.

Urban Teachers participants are among the most expert and result-oriented in the nation because:

•We provide the best teacher preparation available. During the first year of the four-year program, before you start teaching on your own, you’ll spend 1,500 hours working with students in urban classrooms.

•During this time you also begin graduate coursework for a Master of Science in Education degree from the Johns Hopkins University School of Education—ranked #2 in the country. All coursework is clinically based, allowing for immediate practice of learned skills in the classroom and equipping you with a toolbox of proven strategies for working with all students.

•Our four (4) years of mentoring and support tailored to your needs—from coaches and peers—is available longer than any other preparation program. This includes three (3) full years of one-on-one coaching to ensure you grow into an effective teacher. And, because Urban Teachers prepares you for the job from day one, you'll be able to quickly grow into a teacher leader, providing support and guidance to your colleagues in your school and city.

During the first year, participants receive a stipend from Urban Teachers. Starting your second year, you are the teacher of record and participants begin to receive full teacher’s pay. (Teacher salaries in Baltimore and DC are some of the highest in the nation. Both cities allow an effective teacher to earn six figures.)

As part of an Urban Teachers cohort in every school, you’re never alone. Being with other Urban Teachers participants provides an immediate network—in your school and in the thriving—Baltimore, Dallas/Fort Worth or Washington, DC. Urban Teachers educators are trusted by and form partnerships with their colleagues across schools. Teachers are respected community and civic leaders. Whether you’re doing home visits or running into your students’ families at the market, you’ll be having an impact on improving the neighborhood and community you’re living in.

Learn More About: Potomac Photonics

A bwtech@UMBC Affiliated Company

On November 3, bwtech@UMBC will be hosting BioBuzz for two hours of networking, knowledge-sharing, and cocktails. In advance of this great event, we will be sharing stories about some of the companies that illustrate the success of bwtech's incubators and research park. First out of the gate:Potomac Photonics, a micro-manufacturer that entered bwtech in 2014 and has been growing steadily ever since.

What makes your company stand out?

Potomac Photonics has a long track record of developing advanced manufacturing solutions that enable our customers to develop and bring their micro products to the market. Located at bwtech@UMBC we have built an impressive workspace filled with technologies such as laser systems, 3D printers, micro-CNC systems, hot embossing and assembly units capable of achieving features as small as 1 micron (diameter of hair is 75 microns). We are committed to fostering strong partnerships with Universities, Government Institutions and Private industry to push the limits of technology and help bring manufacturing back to the USA. In fact, our Education Manufacturing Initiative has provided a significant amount of support, resources and funding to Universities to help foster research in many areas such as biotechnology, aerospace engineering and physics.

What are your secrets for success?

Potomac Photonics has developed a culture focused on People, Equipment and Technology (PET) that has helped us grow and achieve success in many areas. We have been benchmarked by several organizations to understand how we have successfully trained, promoted and provided opportunity to sub-degree employees, many of whom have successfully risen to the level of Engineer or Management. Our passion for manufacturing and miniaturization has been cited by NASA (https://spinoff.nasa.gov/Spinoff2015/ip_3.html), and we have been invited to many conferences and events (including Capitol Hill) to showcase our technology. Most importantly, we are dedicated to helping our customers achieve the impossible by providing them with solutions to manufacture their next generation devices in both prototyping and production.

In one paragraph, what are some of your most notable accomplishments?

We have proven that manufacturing in the United States is alive and well. We have developed and implemented technology to fabricate devices for very localized radiation treatment of cancer, acceleration of drug discovery, further space research and exploration, implantable devices, and many more. Our customers rely on us to fabricate their complex devices in prototyping and production. Due to the complexity of the problems we are solving, our portion of the overall production process typically cannot be outsourced overseas. We recognize the value of this holds, and are dedicated to continually improving our technology in order to stay ahead of the competition.

Wow, that's quite a resume! How do you encourage innovation within your company?

We push the limits of technology on a regular basis. Each day, when we receive requests from our customers to help them find a manufacturing solution for their product, it seems as though it is always on the edge of what is possible. Our R&D group is focused on developing advanced manufacturing technologies to keep us ahead of the competition, and meet our customer needs.

Thanks, Potomac Photonics! For more on Potomac Photonics, see the links below. Stay tuned for more profiles of bwtech@UMBC companies coming up! Next up: Grip Boost.
