Lecture Synopsis //

In September of 2010 GFDA (Good Fucking Design Advice) was launched as a joke on a whim. Before they knew it, Co-founders Brian Buirge and Jason Bacher were plunged headfirst into business selling shirts and prints from the basement of their rental property in Northeast Ohio. Over the last six years they have established themselves as a powerhouse in the international design and creative community. Their story is overflowing with embarrassing failures and stupid mistakes which they view not as road blocks, but sign posts on their way toward inevitable success. Holding to the perspective that they either win or learn, they believe wholeheartedly that experience only comes the moment after you need it. Brian and Jason look to really address the hurdles and blocks that get in the way of people starting and continuing their own creative projects, taking great pride in championing courage, risk-taking, and failure through their personal examples.

Lecture Time //
- 60-75 minute presentation
- 30 minutes of Q&A or Panel Discussion afterwards

Day Two: At Just the Right Time

Romans 5:6 - “When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners.”

There is a temptation before and after we experience Christ that we must get our act together to experience God’s fullness and favor. It sounds honorable. It seems like a good mind-set. I will please God so that He will love me and call me His child.

The problem is that it just doesn’t work. In fact, it is one of the most dangerous and confusing teachings that has risen up over centuries, fueling a performance-based Christianity, enabling us to take some of the credit for the change in our lives. As long as the enemy can convince us that there’s something we can do to earn God’s favor, he knows he can keep us in a state of confusion and defeat and pride. It’s not our sinfulness that blocks God’s grace and love; it’s that nagging and persistent belief that we can do something about it in our own power.

No, my friends, it is Christ who saves us. He comes at just the right time. He saves us when we are utterly helpless— and know we are utterly helpless. Salvation comes through our faith in God— and our victorious living comes in the very same way. We are called to be bold in our faith. But boldness always begins with humility— the full knowledge that it is by grace, not works, lest any of us boast.

My cherished friends, let’s dig in and live fully for God, always acknowledging Him as the Source of our victory. The Bible is a “come as you are” book. You can come today before the Father, just as you are. Welcome Him into your life. You will never be the same.

Prayer: Dear God, I live boldly for you, always grateful and humble that I am utterly helpless to do your will without your strength and love.
(From Darlene Zschech’s devotional. Revealing Jesus.)

We hope all of our students have a fun and safe Halloween. The tips below are for all of our students as reminders that when celebrating Halloween, be smart, be safe and take care of one another.

1. Trust your instincts. If you feel alarmed, scared or creepy in any situation, go with your gut. If you see something spooky, contact the local Police immediately 911 from an off-campus location, 410-455-5555 from an on-campus location.

2.Travel in groups! Avoid being alone or isolated with a vampire - - or any creature - - who you don’t know or trust. Make sure a dependable friend knows where you are and who you are with at all times. Don’t leave your group with anyone you’re not sure of – even if he or she asks. Say you’d rather stay with the group.

3.Check in with your friends throughout All Hallow’s Eve. Form a buddy system so that no one wanders off alone. Agree on a secret “butt in” signal for uncomfortable situations, such as “Ghost” or “Ghoul!”

4.Don’t accept “potion” from people you don’t know or trust and never leave your “potion” unattended. If you lose sight of your “potion,” get a new one, and always watch your “potion” being prepared.

5. Watch out for your friends, and don’t be afraid to intervene if a situation appears to be scaring your friend or is frightening you. If your friend seems too drunk or is acting abnormally, get them to a safe place immediately.

Even when our students take precautions, we know that scary situations can happen, and if the do, UMBC is here to help. If you need immediate assistance call University Police: 410-455-5555 or talk to your RA to be connected with resources.

Hillary Clinton’s body count

When sitting United States president George H. W. Bush was recorded vomiting on the prime minister of Japan and then fainting in 1992 during a state visit, the media had a field day. There were late night skits, uncensored footage aired on ABC, references on The Simpsons and Family Guy and to top all that, Robin Williams impersonated the incident while accepting a Golden Globe.

But despite the media storm that the incident was able to conjure; Bush’s ability to continue to serve as President of the United States was never called into question. So, when Hillary Clinton stumbled and had to be helped getting into a van leaving a 9/11 memorial event in New York, the general reaction can be seen as curious.

Not only is that incident definitely not the most exciting thing to talk about in regards to Clinton, but she did in fact emerge from her daughter’s apartment only hours later after resting, smiling and seeming to be in perfect health.

However, the media reaction did not relent. Stories were published that questioned her health, as they have since she first announced that she planned on running for president in the spring of last year.

Frankly speaking, there is a lot to question about Hillary Clinton. People speak everyday on her unreliability and how little we can apparently trust her. Considering the idea that there are far more concrete things to discuss well within boundaries of actual politics, instead of attempting to transform a small and fragmented piece of an incident into the entire story, shouldn’t the media and public focus on those things?

Western culture likes women’s bodies…a lot. Especially so, it likes to view women for their bodies alone and ignore the other parts of their existence that validate them as powerful or accomplished.

From the beginning of her term as a public figure, this is what Hillary Clinton has rebelled against. She refused to confine herself to her body. The people who wish to discredit her and her campaign today, often do so by disparaging her body and her personality, not her politics.

If we want an equal society, then we have to hold all of our citizens to the same standards. By not talking about Clinton’s politics and instead focusing on her body, we are helping to create and support the atmosphere of crazy that surrounds this election, while at the same time invalidating women in general.

The public often seems to forget the monument that is Clinton’s campaign. She is the first female main party presidential nominee and very well could be the first female president of the United States. The world, or at least the western world, deserves to have her treated with respect for that alone. Because truthfully, whether we like her or not, invalidating her through fine nuances invalidates women for the act of existing as women.

While it might seem counter-intuitive, we have to treat Hillary like a man for the benefit of women. She is one of the most influential women in American political history and whether we want to admit or omit this for the sake of associations, the way we treat her is directly reflective of how we treat and view women as a population. Most importantly, she is a politician. Shouldn’t we treat her like one?
