Water Weight

  <Tagline>Not actually satire, just a question.</Tagline>

Since most people only read the title and first sentence, here’s my question that I genuinely want answered:

Why do varsity athletes get to have scheduled lifting sessions in the non-varsity athlete weight room?

I’m not an athlete. I used to be one in high school. But I still want to try to stay physically fit, so I go to the gym fairly regularly to lift weights, since running on a treadmill makes me queasy. The RAC, granted, is small. I know that. I’ve gone at various times every day of the week, and it’s almost always a struggle to find a free squat rack, out of the hundreds if not TWO squat racks available to students (a smith machine doesn’t count, it works the wrong muscles and doesn’t necessitate balance). Now, I know what you’re going to say. “YOU LAZY COLLEGE STUDENT,” you say. “THE WEIGHT ROOM WOULD BE FREE IF YOU WENT EARLIER!!” And you know what, I listened to you. I listened, so I went at 7 am, as soon as the gym opened. And ya know what? It wasn’t free. So then I tried a different day at 7am. Still not free. And then yet ANOTHER day, 7am, and the weight room STILL WASN’T FREE. And it wasn’t full of other students who were CHOOSING to go to the gym at some awful hour when the sun still hadn’t risen. No, the SWIM TEAM had taken over the weight room. Monday and Wednesday (and some Fridays too), they’re in there hogging all the equipment and space. Their coaches are there too, making it seem to ME that they have a scheduled practice in the weight room.

I have no problem with people wanting to be healthier and workout who happen to be trying to workout the same time that I am. I applaud you for that. However, there are two issues I see with this situation.

1: The weight room and cardio balcony are able to be reserved for gym classes, which (given enough credits), is available to anyone on campus, or it is generally open to anyone on campus. The swim team is not a gym class, nor is it open to the general population on campus.

And 2: The varsity athletes get their own weight room! Why do they need to have ours as well?

I try to have a rational, analytical perspective on life, so let’s look at the possible reasons WHY the swim team has taken over one of the few places on campus for UMBC students (who aren’t paid to be athletic) to get rid of that freshman 50.

1- Scheduling problems. Maybe the varsity weight room is busy and already full with ANOTHER team using the weights, and maybe that’s the only time both teams are completely available for their workouts. If this is the problem, get a better schedule coordinator. Split the practices so not everyone is working out at once. Have an A/B schedule. I’m not speaking from ignorance about scheduling issues. I’ve scheduled tournaments for over 100 people and practices for multiple teams. You can make it work.

2- Equipment availability. Maybe the varsity weight room doesn’t have enough equipment for all of the swim team to use, or the right kind of equipment. If this is the case, why haven’t the varsity sports coordinators allocated a portion of the funds available to the athletics department to get apparently much-needed equipment? Or has that money already gone to building the new Athletic Center (which will be a monument of construction for years after we’re all gone).

3- Actually Unscheduled. If the athletics department here functions like many other teams I know of, the athletes are required to lift or run a certain number of extra hours each week in addition to usual practices. Maybe 7am on Monday Wednesday Friday just happens to be when most of the swim team is available, and maybe they can’t use their own weight room if it’s “extra” lifting. This case is also absurd. The coaches are there, the whole swim team is there, and they put up the “weight room is reserved” sign every so often just to make SURE the swim team gets their lifting in.

I’m not attacking the swim team. They’re one of the few teams on campus that actually does a great job, and I sure couldn’t be a Division 1 athlete. It takes a lot of work and schedule balancing, and I appreciate that! But it gets frustrating when the only time and place I have free to workout is taken by people who have access to other facilities.

The pool, I understand them taking that over. That is their turf, their field, their court. But sometimes the swim team has practice there when it’s supposed to be open to the public as well.

So, for any swimmers out there, can you answer my question? I honestly want to know. Why does the swim team get to take over the weight room? And does it happen with any other varsity teams at other times?
