UMBC’s Livewire 7 music festival explores the avant garde

UMBC’s department of music will present its annual Livewire festival of new music, featuring concerts, discussions and lectures, October 26 – 29, in the Earl and Darielle Linehan Concert Hall and other venues across the university.

This year’s theme, “Livewire 7: The New York School and Beyond,” focuses on an artistic movement that emerged from a group of American composers originally centered in New York — John Cage, Morton Feldman, Earle Brown, and Christian Wolff — and features performances by UMBC faculty and special guest artists.

The post-World War II era of the early 1950s ushered in a turbulent and revolutionary period in American art that extended across the fields of music, dance, theatre, and the visual and literary arts. The visual arts witnessed the emergence of abstract expressionism, championed by figures as diverse as Jackson Pollack, Franz Kline, Mark Rothko, and Robert Motherwell; the dance scene exploded with new works by Merce Cunningham, Anna Sokolow, and Paul Taylor; and poets such as Jackson Mac Low experimented with new forms.

In music, the creative focus began to shift from the major figures of pre-war modern music — Arnold Schoenberg and Igor Stravinsky, both by then living in Los Angeles — to a younger generation of composers based in New York City clustered around John Cage (1912 – 1992), including Morton Feldman (1926 – 1987), Earle Brown (1926 – 2002), and Christian Wolff (b. 1934). Along with pianist David Tudor (1926 – 1996), for whom many of their works were written, the composers gradually became known as the New York School, and were closely aligned with Cunningham and with artists Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns.

In 1951, Cage began to explore the use of “chance operations” in his music, thereby freeing the compositional process from some of his personal likes and dislikes. Feldman experimented with graphic notation that might tell performer to play a high or low note, but not specify a pitch; Wolff wrote pieces in which one performer’s actions might influence another; and Brown constructed works with fixed modules in which the various pages or parts might be performed in different orders.

Throughout, the music explored silence and indeterminacy (although not improvisation), and performers such as Tudor translated this new aesthetic for audiences. For years, their work was subject to derision and ridicule from the classical music establishment, but by the time of Cage’s death in 1992, a couple weeks shy of his 80th birthday, his work and that of his colleagues exerted a profound influence, opening up pathways for younger composers.

“Music and other art forms were practically redefined for me,” says Tom Goldstein, associate professor of music and curator of this year’s Livewire festival, as he described his reaction to discovering the work of the New York School as a young performer. “Here was a revolution, manifest musically in greatly varied notational systems, employment of chance operations, open instrumentation, the relinquishing of compositional decisions to the performer, frequent use and extended duration of silence and unintended sounds, the inclusion of ‘noise,’ experimentation with form (or the absence of it), and the influence of Zen Buddhism. I was so powerfully affected that, for some time, I believed that any late-twentieth-century composer whose music wasn’t filtered through the sensibilities of the New York School bordered on irrelevancy.”

In addition to performances of numerous works by Cage, Feldman, Brown, and Wolff, Livewire 7 includes presentations of music by Thomas DeLio, Malcolm Goldstein, Toshi Ichiyanagi, Ben Johnston, Stephen F. Lilly, Bunita Marcus, Andrew Rindfleisch, Christopher Shultis, James Tenney, and Steve Wanna.

Livewire 7 features special guest artist Malcolm Goldstein, who has been active in the presentation of new music and dance since the early 1960s in New York City. He co-founded the Tone Roads Ensemble and participated in the Judson Dance Theater, the New York Festival of the Avant Garde, and the Experimental Intermedia Foundation. His “soundings” improvisations have received international acclaim for extending the range of tonal/sound-texture possibilities of the violin and revealing new dimensions of expression.

UMBC faculty and staff featured in performances and events include affiliate artist Audrey Andrist; lecturer Matt Belzer; associate professor Lisa Cella; affiliate artist Hui-Chuan Chen; affiliate artist and adjunct professor Patrick Crossland; affiliate artist Nicholas Currie; affiliate artist Gita Ladd; associate professor Tom Goldstein; assistant professor Brian Kaufman; affiliate artist Jacqueline Pollauf; professor E. Michael Richards; affiliate artist Kazuko Tanosaki; professor Airi Yoshioka; associate professor of dance Doug Hamby; director of arts and culture Thomas Moore; and UMBC student performers.

Additional guest artists include violist Karin Brown; pianist Curtis Cacioppo; pianist Paul Hoffmann; visual artist Ray Kass; multi-instrumentalist Stephen Lilly; conductor Jason Love; soprano Stacey Mastrian; and percussionist Michelle Purdy ’10, music.

Heeding the Warning Shot, and ACTING

<Tagline>The IOT has been enlisted, and it is time to warn its users.</Tagline>

UMBC is uniquely suited to act in this extremely precarious time.

It is not too late to inform the users of IOT devices that are exposed that they are vulnerable and are also part of the problem. Another attack IS coming.

To accomplish this, all that is necessary is to run a persistent 'notice of external threat' information project to show that a person's gateway, machine, email, or IOT devices are vulnerable. For those users, who are evidently open to attack already for lack of knowledge, the presence of a trusted intruder without nefarious intent and under scrutiny for ensuring so, could serve to spur their action. Yes, this is a recommendation to discover those users, but it is now reasonable to do so to mitigate that soon to occur next attack. Those users need help, and this recommendation is to provide that first notice rapidly for every user that becomes vulnerable. It is, in some ways, a warning about a contagious disease that will attack even from the environment of their home.

UMBC has some of the best professionals and students in this field. For the social benefit to accrue from UMBC would be a huge boost to UMBC. The cost to accomplish this is not much more than the cost to obtain permission from an appropriate authority to do so on a very limited basis. It is potentially a violation of the Constitution if not done perfectly and openly, but it is a reasonable intrusion as well if it is open.

Keeping such a tool active would shift the nature of the attack to an attack of the 'organization' providing the tool, creating a new kind of honey pot.

Remember, waiting for others to find a fix for this is really a decision to abdicate our social role. Jump in!

Dennis

Get to know a Social Sciences Tutor: Dana Kobrin

  <Tagline>From struggling student to tutor</Tagline>

Tell us a little about yourself…

Hey! My name is Dana Kobrin, I’m
from Silver Spring, MD, and I’m a Psychology major and Sociology minor. I am a Resident Assistant in Pataspco Hall,
I’m a tutor (obviously haha), I’m the Treasurer of Psi Chi, the psychology
honor society, check us on myUMBC!), and I’m a Research Assistant in the
Cardiovascular Behavioral Medicine lab with Dr. Waldstein.

How long have you been a tutor?

I became a tutor through the
Psychology Peer Mentor program, so this is my 3rd semester as an
appointment tutor, and my 4th in the Peer Mentor program.

How and why did you get involved
    in being a tutor?

Honestly, my first semester here I
was struggling academically. I didn’t have the best study habits from high
school, and was so excited for college I lost track of the school side. One of
my professors suggested tutoring to help academically and learn study tips, and
I loved it. I learned how to study, and enjoyed studying in groups and teaching
people, so after my freshman year I was asked to join the LRC and happily
    accepted.

What is your favorite thing about being a tutor?

When a student truly learns
something from class material, or learns something about their study habits and
themselves. I’ve tutored students for class they are only taking for graduation
requirement, as well as students needing support in their major, and every time
I see a smile or excitement about the material it reminds me why I tutor.

Why should students utilize the tutoring?

I was struggling academically for
my first semester or two and really needed support academically, and to learn
sometimes you just have to sit down, put music on, and just study. Tutoring not
only helped my GPA and major choice, it also taught me how to get my work done,
procrastinate less, and that I love teaching and helping other students.

What advice would you give students about how to prepare for a tutoring
    session?

1. If you cannot make your
appointment, PLEASE give your tutor at least a day an advance, or in
emergencies tell us ASAP. There are so many other students that could benefit
    from that time.

2. Don’t go into the tutoring
appointment and expect me to do your homework for you or give you the answers,
I’m not google. Tell your tutor what exactly you need help in, and in most
cases the tutor can tailor to exactly what kind of support you need.

When and where can someone work with you through the Learning Resources
    Center?

I’m a social science and foreign
language tutor, so I tutor Psyc 100, 200, 210, and 285, Socy 101, and Hebrew
101 and 102. If you are presently in any of these classes I still have slots
open so apply through the ASC website and I’ll help you.

INDS 410

<Tagline>A winter course that helps you market yourself to employers!</Tagline>

I’m not exactly sure where the time has gone, but registration for winter classes is already here. If any of you are worried about finding a summer internship, or even wondering how to get started on your resume, cover letter, or any of your other professional documents, consider taking INDS 410!

This one-credit, pass/fail course will get you motivated and prepared to land your dream internship. You will develop a polished resume/cover letter, identify target internships, and practice talking about your strengths in a supportive environment. You'll also receive individualized feedback from a career professional, peers, and visiting employers.

The class is open to all UMBC students, regardless of major, class, or career interests. That sounds pretty cool to me. You never know what kinds of interesting discussions you can have with people who have completely different interests than you.

There is only one assignment attached to the class, an Internship Strategy Book that is geared towards helping you identify your strengths and potential internship opportunities, tailoring your experiences to those specific opportunities, and communicating your attributes to employers.

Still not sure if you want to take the class? If you’re on the fence, here are a list of questions that you will answer during the course of the class:

What strengths do I possess?

What kind of internship do I want?

Where do I want to intern, and how will I apply?

How will I stand out on paper?

How will I stand out online?

How will I stand out in person?

Who is already in my network, and who do I want in my network?

Where do I start?

If you’re interested in knowing the answers to any of these questions, this is the class for you.

As college students, it’s fairly expected that we complete an internship during our college careers. This is the perfect way to learn how to market yourself and your experiences to get that internship.

If you want to get a head start on your Internship Search, come to the Career Center and speak with a member of our Internships and Employment team! Directions on how to schedule an appointment can be found here.

Finding the perfect internship for you can take a lot of time and research. The Career Center’s website offers a number of different resources to help students with their search. Learn how to navigate UMBCWorks, how to meet employers on campus, and strategies to find jobs and internships. Those are only a few of the tools the website offers.

I know sometimes it seems like classes like these aren’t worth the effort, but getting credit and understanding how to use your strengths to market yourself is a great way to have a productive winter break!
