Day Two: Through It All

2 Corinthians 4:15-17 - That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day. For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!”

The difference between faithful people and unfaithful people is unfaithful people give up at the first sign of difficulty. Faithful people keep on keeping on. I’m not that smart, but I do know one thing: It is always too soon to quit. God uses tough times to test our persistence.

When we started Saddleback, I preached the first sermon to one person: my wife. She thought it was too long. Thirty-one years later, she’s still saying my sermons are too long! I thought when we started a church we’d get a building quickly. We went 15 years without a building. In the first 13 years of this church, we used 79 different facilities. You know how many times I felt like giving up? Just every Monday morning! But I don’t know how to quit. And God said, “Rick, if I never give you a building, would you still serve me?” And I said, “Absolutely!”

Saddleback grew to more than 10,000 people before we built our first building. How would you like to set up and take down a church for 10,000 people every week? There’s not a lot of glory in that. It’s just hard work. God uses tough times to test our persistence.

If you’re going through tough times right now, then this verse is for you: “That is why we never give up. Though our bodies are dying, our spirits are being renewed every day. For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever!” God is more interested in what you’re becoming than what’s happening to you. He often allows trials, troubles, tribulations, and problems in your life to build diligence, determination, and character. Will you continue to serve God even when life stinks?

“Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” - Galatians 6:9 NIV.
(From Rick Warren’s Daily Hope devotional.)

Then & Now, #8: The First UMBC Buildings, 1967 & 2016

As UMBC has celebrated its 50th anniversary by looking back on its earliest years, the names of the original buildings have been invoked repeatedly. The original academic building (now part of Biological Sciences) once was called Academic I. The original student gathering space, with a gym and a cafeteria, was called Gym I. And the classroom between them was Lecture Hall 1.

Except ... that's not what any of those buildings were called in 1966-1967! All of those names betray a knowledge of events (specifically, the construction of newer facilities) that were, in 1966-1967, still in the future. You don't call something "1" until there's a "2" (see, e.g., World Wars, Super Bowls, movies with sequels, etc.). On opening day, the original buildings were simply the Academic Building, the Lecture Hall, and the Multi-Purpose Building.

You can see those original facilities (left to right) in the 1967 photo below. Compare that image with the photo below it, taken from the same spot in 2016.

Featured Course: American Culture in a Global Perspective

<Tagline>Examine how American culture impacts the world with AMST 352</Tagline>

While the American Dream means different things to different people, a recognizable “good life” that communicates the American Dream often revolves around consumption: well-appointed homes, cars that signal status, the elaborate Promposals, weddings, and vacations shared on Facebook or Instagram.

Explore all this and more in AMST 352: American Culture in a Global Perspective, a comparative study into how and why United States culture impacts the world. This winter’s topic: Consumer Culture.

What are the relationships between America’s consumer culture and the rest of the world? What are the economic, environmental, labor, and health impacts of consumer culture for the people who make and/or consume everyday products like the food we eat, the clothing we wear, and the prescription drugs that keep us healthy? To what extent might the conditions of contemporary consumer culture foster a dehumanizing and ever-expanding “iron cage” that might enclose producers and consumers alike? This winter term, we’ll address all of these questions, sharpening our skills in speaking, writing, and critical thinking along the way.

AMST 352 is offered at UMBC’s Shady Grove campus, and fulfills the Arts and Humanities GEP and the Culture requirement for undergraduates.
