Slaying on the Weekly: Voting and Other Important Things

A weekly round-up curated by Women’s Center staff member, Michael Jalloh Jamboria

In the spirit of my friend, who gave us the glorious name ‘Slaying on the Weekly’, every week I will be bringing you some interesting, funny or thought-provoking content from the internet! Be sure to join us next week for more and continue to slay!

October 20th was the last of the Presidential Debate series. We’ve laughed, we’ve cried, and soon it’ll be time to vote. While it’s too late to register online, you can register in person (if you live in Maryland) on November 3rd.

Critical Social Justice is NEXT WEEK! Be sure to join us, and our campus partners, during the CSJ events happening from October 24th- 28th. Also, check out our series on the Women’s Center Blog on things you need to know about our Keynote Speaker, Disability Justice and Residential Segregation.

Equally important, I want to make sure we are all taking care of ourselves. Engage in whatever self-care practices make you feel the best. Express and allow yourself to feel the emotions you have! The Women’s Center, The Mosaic Center, the Queer Student Lounge and the Counseling Center are campus resources that are here to help with that process.

Until next week!

Day Five: Staying in Love

1 John 4:19 - “We love because he first loved us.”

People often ask me, “How do you practically continue to ’stay in love’ with the Lord like you do?” Really, it’s very simple. I do it the same way people have always stayed in love. I spend time with Him. I listen to Him. I let Him love me. I thank Him for the things He does for me.

I love just spending time in Jesus’ presence, with no agenda other than being with him, worshiping him, being in tune with his heartbeat. I talk to him; I listen; I worship. I let him fill me with his love. I don’t look at my watch when I pray. I have no idea how to compartmentalize God. I don’t separate out my time with God and say, “Here You go, Lord. This is Your special time.” All my time is His time. He is my everything. He is like breathing to me. How could I say to the one I most love: “You can have this half hour, but I’m busy; I have a lot of stuff I need to do today.” I wouldn’t dream of it.

Jesus is the one who loves us more than anyone, the one who gave His life to save ours and has invested his entire being in loving us completely. Surely this demands our full commitment in return? But more than all of that, I practically “stay in love” with Jesus because the more I get to know him, the more incredible I realize he is. Just when I think I know him pretty well, another layer of incredible, unsurpassed beauty and majesty is revealed. His love and grace know no bounds. We’ve barely scratched the surface. This is our Savior.
(Adapted from Heidi and Rolland Baker’s, Reckless Devotion.)

We “stay in love” because he first loved us and keeps loving us firstly. Let’s respond to his loving us first in practical ways each day.

-AP

Roommate Needed for Spring 2016

  <Tagline>2 Bedroom Apartment in need of a 4th Roommate</Tagline>

Hello there! We are a group of UMBC students looking for a fourth (female) roommate to share a bedroom. We are moving into an apartment in Catonsville that is off the UMBC shuttle route in January. Including water, the rent would be about $425 a month (but gas and electric will be split among the four of us). The apartment includes a kitchen, laundry facilities, and is a 15 minute shuttle ride/5 minute car ride to UMBC. Prefer no smoking, and drinking at a minimum.
About us:

We are all sophomores, and are composed of a bio major, mechanical engineering major, and English major. The other two roommates are boys, so would need to be okay with co-ed housing. One of them really likes cooking, so you won't have to. We are a pretty lame crowd, and won't ever have many people over at once. We spend most of our weekends playing card games or watching movies. Liking Disney and Pixar movies is a plus.
About me (the roommate):

I'm the English major listed above, with a minor in creative writing and psychology. I am a relatively neat person, and prefer getting up before 10 am in the morning. Also, I can edit your papers for you.

Email me at barretm1@umbc.edu if you are interested!

Empowering Baltimore communities toward social change

Humanities scholars, cultural organizers, and community representatives will gather on October 29 for a dynamic discussion about building democracy, fostering social justice, and improving Baltimore’s future.

The Dresher Center for the Humanities is leading “Baltimore Coalition Stories,” a community conversation about the importance of coalitions in the life of Baltimore. The event is part of the ongoing Baltimore Stories project, an initiative that shines a spotlight on collaborations of university, community, and non-profit partners in Baltimore neighborhoods.

The Baltimore Stories project has been made possible in part by a major $225,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and is a partnership among the University of Maryland, College Park; Maryland Humanities; the University of Maryland, Baltimore County; Enoch Pratt Free Library; and the Greater Baltimore Cultural Alliance. The project includes a series of free, public programs that explore the way Baltimore citizens are thinking about the narratives that influence the life and identity of the city.

UMBC’s Dresher Center for the Humanities is a major partner on the grant and organized an interactive public event earlier this year that highlighted stories of identity, belonging, and activism from several Baltimore communities. On December 3, UMBC will host the project’s culminating event: “Reflecting on Baltimore’s Stories.”

“Now more than ever, it is crucial to consider the role of coalitions, forged across boundaries, in practicing public humanities and supporting the work of active and engaged communities,” said Jessica Berman, director of UMBC’s Dresher Center for the Humanities.

Complete event details can be found below. To register, click here.

Why English Class Should Be Replaced With Alchemy Class

Alchemy is the most relevant form of contemporary science by a fairly significant margin. How do we know this? Because years of public school education have taught us that the only relevant skills are the ones that will eventually help you make money. And as it turns out, alchemy can be used to score massive profits. For example, I have a cousin who makes several million dollars a year by extracting the lead from old paint chips and transmuting it to gold. Normally making Gold from Lead requires a particle accelerator, or at the very least a nuclear reactor, but with the process of chrysopoeia (a common application of alchemy), the process can be greatly simplified. The other sciences hardly even put up a fight. Physics? Please, how can you expect to find any money at all when you can’t even find the graviton after searching for literally decades? Biology? It’s irrelevant to study living things when most things that were once alive are now dead. Oh, and Chemistry? Literally just alchemy without any of the fun spells. Hydrochloric acid was even discovered by an alchemist. Go figure.

So we’ve established that alchemy should be a graduation requirement for all UMBC undergrads. But now we are left with a conundrum--which other class should be eliminated to make room for the alchemy requirement? My vote goes to English class, and the reasons are simple. You see, alchemy follows a simple, four-character alphabet, i.e., Earth, Air, Water, and Fire. English on the other hand, has twenty-six of the motherfuckers to keep track of. Who has time for that? Also, English doesn’t make any sense. You pick up a dictionary to find out what a word means, only to discover that every English word is only defined in terms of other English words. Who designed this shit? Actually, written language as a whole is pretty overrated. Trust me, if I could do this article in the form of an alchemic transmutation, I would.
-Keith Mias

          Project Description
Pam suggested that the classes that were not accepted in the 60 credits would show a note that says that particular class has been excluded.

Can we note which classes were not accepted as transferred in the 60 credits.
