The STRiVE coaching team (consisting of UMBC students and faculty/staff) believes everyone can develop leadership skills and abilities.STRiVE participants will make new friends, learn about themselves, reflect on values and ethics, work in teams to develop practical plans for making a difference on campus and in society, and tackle both simulated and real leadership challenges. No prior experience is necessary! We are looking for a diverse group of students committed to developing their leadership skills and applying them to create positive change in the campus community. Please note that the coaching team will make every effort to place participants according to their choices; however, we are unable to guarantee participants any specific topic at this time. We encourage participants to be open-minded and flexible when considering their vision selection.

When is the application due?

Applications are due on November 6 at 11:59pm. It's targeted primarily towards students in health related sciences (i.e.: Biology and Psychology), and it also satisfies requirements for medical and dental schools. Given that this course is so important, there are many support programs on campus to help students succeed!

SI-PASS: Supplemental Instruction at UMBC are Peer Assisted Study Sessions where an SI PASS leader guides students through study sessions. Students review the material with an SI PASS leader who has not only passed the course, but also attends the course with the students in order to make sure the material being reviewed is accurate and current. SI PASS is great for reinforcing and solidifying concepts, and SI PASS leaders also conduct exam reviews before tests. You can find out times for SI PASS on our website.

LRC Math Lab: The Math Lab offers walk in help for students in PHYS 111 every Monday from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. This is ideal for students who just have a few questions about a certain concept. It can also be used as a quick prep before a test. The Math Lab is located on the first floor of the Library.

LRC Appointment Tutoring: Students who want help in PHYS 111 can sign up for weekly, small group tutoring with a certified peer tutor! This is recommended for students who could benefit from consistent support in the course. You can sign up for weekly appointment tutoring on our website, or you can click the sign up button on our Facebook page!

PHYS 111 TAs and LAs: Teaching Assistants and Learning Assistants are great resources both inside and outside of the classroom. The event enables students, both with and without coding experience, to work on innovative projects independently and collaboratively, to network and expand their skills, and to learn directly from leaders in the industry.

“I was completely blown away by how many people came out not only from UMBC but schools from across the East Coast.
HackUMBC inspires students to create fresh technical solutions in whirlwind 24-hour hackathon

The event enables students, both with and without coding experience, to work on innovative projects independently and collaboratively, to network and expand their skills, and to learn directly from leaders in the industry.

“I was completely blown away by how many people came out not only from UMBC but schools from across the East Coast. Seeing how much HackUMBC has grown and is continuing to grow is an overwhelming feeling that continues to leave me in awe year after year,” said Celeste Wong ‘18, computer science and social work, a HackUMBC co-organizer.

Participating student teams submitted 71 hacks at the end of the event. Twelve hacks received awards from the HackUMBC organization and from sponsors.

The award-winning app Parking Pronto was designed to help users find parking spots on campus through crowdsourcing, showing available spots based on permit type. Another app, Beige, won the award for the “Best Hack Against Online Harassment.” This app automatically blocks from a Twitter user’s view those accounts that post a certain number of “user-defined trigger words.”

Katherine Gibson ’08, computer science, and John Park, both lecturers of CSEE, and Rick Forno, assistant director of the UMBC Center for Cybersecurity, director of the Cybersecurity Graduate Program at UMBC, and faculty advisor to HackUMBC student organization, served as judges.

“Now in its fourth year, HackUMBC continues to grow in standing and regional attraction,” said Forno. “It’s always an awesome feeling to see the amazing intellectual energy and technical results these students—novices and experts alike—generate at this prominent, intense, around-the-clock campus event.”

In addition to becoming a very popular regional event, HackUMBC is gaining steam on a larger scale. The official student hackathon league Major League Hacking recently released standings for the North American Spring 2016 season, listing UMBC as eighth out of 47 schools. Wong explained that while the ranking shows HackUMBC has become a popular event with students, it also shows that the university’s “hackathon community is representing UMBC well across North America.”
