Day Four: Father to the Fatherless

Psalm 10:14 - “But you, God, see the trouble of the afflicted; you consider their grief and take it in hand. The victims commit themselves to you; you are the helper of the fatherless.”

If you grew up in a home with no father or with a father who was unkind or not really there for you, God is and always will be the defender of the fatherless. Thank God for the example of wonderful earthly fathers. If you have a great dad, make sure you take the time to appreciate him today. But many today can testify to not having a loving earthly father. The fatherless generation is looking for examples as they raise their own children.

But praise be to God, He is the ultimate example of true fatherhood, full of grace, wisdom, guidance, and most of all, unconditional love. He hears and responds to the prayer of the afflicted. He pays special note to the fatherless. He is there to encourage, strengthen, rescue, and heal all the helpless.

Be assured, no matter how grim circumstance may be for you or those you love, God adopts, defends, and gives dignity to us, even those who are betrayed and damaged. God is our loving heavenly Father. Remember, you are not alone and you are not unloved. You are completely valued by the One who created you and knew you even before you came to be. You have the most wonderful Father you could imagine.

Prayer: You are my Father and my God. Thank you that I am your child. Thank you that you heal and rescue me when I am hurt. Thank you for never abandoning me- you are always there for me and all your children.

They’ve put a spell on us: Ancient Studies Council hosts curse-making seminar

After braving the early autumn chill and the hike up to the Performing Arts and Humanities building, UMBC’s Ancient Studies Council hosted their very own curse-making seminar on Friday Sept. 30. With guidance from Molly Jones-Lewis, an ancient studies professor, students followed ancient Roman rituals, used aluminum (instead of traditional lead) bars and crafted their curses to get into the Halloween spirit.

The inspiration behind this event came from members’ interests in ancient magic and from Jones-Lewis’ acclaimed winter course, “Defense Against the Dark Arts: Magic and Witchcraft in the Ancient World.”

Making curses isn’t the only thing you’ll find the council doing this semester. Senior ancient studies major and council president Riley Auer gave us the low down on what to expect from the council in the future. Other seminars on the council’s Fall course list include “Scribe School 2: Secrets of Mycenae” and “Game of Romes: alia iacta est,” which roughly translates from Latin to, “the die has been cast.”

In addition to the mini-seminar series hosted by the council, they look forward to partnering with the ancient studies department to organize events for Ancient Studies Week (Oct. 10-14). The week is chock-full of guest lecturers, marathon readings of the Aeneid (an epic written by the Roman poet Virgil), play readings and “Scribe School 2.”

Many of Auer’s favorite memories stem from Ancient Studies Week. “All ancient studies classes are cancelled during the events so our students have a chance to interact with each other, the material and celebrate the best major on campus,” Auer said. “I’m also really excited about the ‘Scribe School 2′,” she continued. “Our first one was so much fun and this time, Dr. Lane will teach us about cuneiform and Linear B. The best seminars are always the ones that our professors are passionate about.”

Once an uninvolved commuter student, Auer was encouraged to participate in the Ancient Studies Council by the former president, for which she is grateful. The council, said Auer, “100 percent increased my participation in the major and has allowed me to build strong relationships with my faculty and fellow classmates.”

Auer credits her love of the major to the dedication of everyone in it, including “the engaging faculty and their dedication to the students, enthusiastic members, our fun-filled seminars and the relationships that grow from the combination of these things.”

Auer wants students to know that these Ancient Studies Council events are not solely for students pursuing an ancient studies major. “Basically,” said Auer, “We seek to show how awesome classics and archaeology are. Ancient studies courses themselves are a blast and the Ancient Studies Council really highlights that,” she said.

“If you have an interest in antiquity and having a good time, then we are the student org for you.”

Conference Travel Forms for Reimbursement

<Tagline>This is for those who have already registered</Tagline>

Sorry for all of the emails today, conference is a lot to coordinate. Anyways, this is for anyone who has ALREADY registered for conference. See the other post for instructions if you have NOT registered yet.

We will be reimbursing up to $90 for registration costs for the first 20 members that submit an e-travel form. This needs to be completed BEFORE conference. The E-Travel will be completed now and supporting documents i.e. receipts will be submitted after conference.

1. DOWNLOAD the Instructions I have attached to fill out the form. Make sure to enter the amount that you paid for registration, not just $90.

2. EVERYONE needs to complete the liability form, I have also attached, and email it to umbcswe@gmail.com before the conference. You are representing our chapter so we need to make sure you stay safe and smart!

3. If you are DRIVING to conference, you will need to include mileage in your estimates for the E-Travel form. You need to help drive others (sign-up in the carpool) in order to be eligible. You can estimate an additional $124 (this is (111*2) miles * $0.56 per mile). If you paid for other travel i.e. bus or train already, you can be reimbursed for it as long as your total does not exceed $90 (for example, you spent $35 on registration, $55 of that could go towards your transportation). This will not apply to anyone who books travel after this post date since we now have carpool options.

Email stippett1@umbc.edu with any questions or concerns

Thank you!!!

Sorry for all of the emails today, conference is a lot to coordinate. Anyways, this is for anyone who has ALREADY registered for conference. See the other post for instructions if you have NOT...
