Why Quality Matters: Provide Measurable Learning Objectives

    <Tagline>Establish a connected foundation for student learning</Tagline>

Everything in a hybrid or online course -- from the module objectives to instructional materials and activities, and even the technologies and tools -- must consistently support the course learning objectives.

General Standard 2 for Learning Objectives looks for measurable learning objectives at the course and unit level, which will help your students know what they will need to do to successfully complete the course. A unit can be defined in multiple ways such as a week or module, and these are typically described in specific, observable terms and in smaller, discrete pieces. For example, here is a course objective for a freshman writing course with three unit-level objectives:

Course Objective:

Upon completion of this course, learners will demonstrate mastery of rules of punctuation.

Unit-Level Objectives:

Learners will write sentences that demonstrate correct use of commas, semicolons, and periods.

Learners will use apostrophes when, and only when, needed.

Learners will use double and single quotation marks correctly in quoted material.

Learning objectives should be appropriate for the course level, written with the student in mind, and consistently linked to course activities. Bloom’s Taxonomy is very helpful to ensure appropriate learning objectives, and many instructors use a numbering system to show how the learning objectives align to course activities.

All five elements in this standard are essential and other QM standards evaluate the success of course and unit-level learning objectives. Alignment, therefore, is critical to support General Standard 2. Alignment emphasizes the idea that certain critical course components (course materials, assessments, learning activities, and tools) will work together to ensure that students achieve the desired learning outcomes for your course.

If you think of a house, then the learning objectives form the foundation and structure of the course and its modules. The materials, activities, opportunities for engagement and interaction, the tools used -- all of that infrastructure supports and enhances the learning objectives, and ensures a deep, meaningful connection to the assessments, which are used to evaluate the objectives of the course or modules.

For more information about Quality Matters and Instructional Technology at UMBC:

Follow our Instructional Technology group page

Visit our FAQ collection

Open an RT ticket

Request an appointment with an instructional technology specialist

The Faculty Development Center provides workshops and consulting opportunities for faculty to develop or improve their learning objectives.

Next month, we’ll look at General Standard 3: Assessments.

How will I know if a class I am enrolling in is part of the CMI?

Good question! You will know when you register for the course. The following message will be displayed: "This course is part of the UMBC Course Materials Initiative in which reduced pricing was negotiated directly with the publisher for all students enrolling in this course. The course materials are provided in a common digital platform to all students; a maximum course materials charge of $____ will be included on all students’ tuition bills for these materials (so students are not to buy these materials from any other source). The digital textbook and any online publisher integrations associated with your instructor-selected text are accessed directly via Blackboard. [Please note that your instructor may have additional materials required for your course that are not included in this Initiative, but which will be available in the UMBC Bookstore.]"

How much is this charge?

The charge varies from class to class depending on the course materials required.

What if I have a Book Loan or Scholarship?

There is no need for a financial aid book loan for the CMI charges. The charge is automatically billed to your student account when you enroll in the course, and is paid like any other charge. Any excess financial aid loan or scholarship disbursements will also apply against open Course Material charges.

Great, and how does this benefit the students?

Lower-priced course materials. Who doesn’t want that?

Access your course materials by the first day of class; you get the right stuff, right when you need it.

Pay on your student bill, just like tuition. A course materials charge is included on all registered students’ tuition bill for the courses in this program. This allows you to use budget billing for your course materials!

Common digital format – say goodbye to heavy backpacks & bulky books, and feel good about this environmentally-friendly alternative. (Don’t worry there are print options available for those who want it.)

Access your course materials wherever and whenever. Once you download your digital book to your bookshelf app, you can access it anywhere – even OFFLINE! You can study using up to 4 devices; go from your desktop, to your laptop, to your iPad/ Kindle, to your Android/iPhone.

Single sign-on. Tired of having to log into multiple sites to access your course materials? This Initiative makes that problem go away. When you enroll in a CMI course, an ADA compliant, common digital format of your textbook and ancillaries, such as Aleks or WebAssign, automatically uploads onto your Blackboard account.

What if I am a student who prefers a physical textbook?

Students are able to print up to ten pages per login at no other cost than the cost of paper and ink. The UMBC Bookstore has two print copies of each course material at the Course Materials Information Desk. Students can also opt out of the digital material to purchase the physical materials. Please note, if your CMI course is using courseware, opting out removes access to both the eText and courseware. You will need to purchase a bundle of the textbook with access card or similar.

I'm working on a project at 2am and need help but the Bookstore is closed. If you drop the class during UMBCs add/drop period you will be refunded your CMI charge. If you drop the class after the allowed add/drop date, you will not be refunded, but you will be able to maintain access to the course materials through your VitalSource account.

What if I am retaking a course that is part of the CMI?

If you retake a course that was part of the CMI in both previous and current semesters, you will still have access to your eTextbook and courseware at no additional cost (as long as the materials are the same) within a 2 year period. Our system automatically tracks retakes so there is no action needed on the student end. The CMI charge will be removed/refunded after the CMI Status Change deadline.

Students retaking will see a message about previous access. If they do not see this message, contact the CMI coordination before the CMI Status Change deadline

Where on Blackboard can I find my course materials?

Your course materials are located within your course on Blackboard.
Construction of Library Pool Began Sunday Afternoon

  <Tagline>“Now I can literally drown in homework!”</Tagline>

Talk of construction has tickled the thoughts of UMBC students. The library pond is finally finished. The Commons rooftop eventually patched down. The new Event Center is well underway and the Old Theatre is scheduled to be demolished next mid-semester. But what you probably didn’t hear about was the new pool at the library. Now you don’t have to go to the gym and spend $5 for a membership (or free with your red card) to slam dunk your own body into a huge vat of chlorine and children’s piss. The new library pool is so new that Hrabowski himself wasn’t even aware that construction had even started.

The pool is supposed to replace the Retriever Learning Center (or the RLC) where students make themselves at home and find a comfy corner to take a 5-day nap. Heading this construction is HraBROski, the president’s slightly cooler and totally brosome bro. Found chillin’ by the tunnels at the library pond, he comments: “Ya, I totally thought of this idea when the cops kept tellin’ me that I can’t actually swim in the pond and I got kicked out of the RAC like a bunch of times for stealing the shower water to make Erickson Field a pool.”

This isn’t just any ordinary pool that’s being built. It is going to have a built-in laptop bar with working outlets and high tables for your homework. This design was made with the students in mind. Geography major and IS and graphic design minors, Greg Sweis, is unapologetically happy: “I can’t believe this is happening! I’ve always wanted to be able to swim some laps and then do my WebAssign. This. Is. Innovation”.
The RLC has remained closed for quite some time and the students who were displaced have become antsy. They’re not sure what to do with their lives now that an awesome pool is being built. Take some advice from HraBROski and “don’t try to steal shower water from the RAC.”

- Your Aunt

In the future, she plans to pursue a graduate degree in environmental studies. Her advice to future researchers is that you should be ready to dedicate much of your time to your topic. It may be cliché, but you have to eat, sleep, and breathe your topic. Your friends should be able to support you when you rant on and on and on about it. Most of all, you must love it. If you don’t enjoy your research, then you won’t want to push through any issues that presents themselves along the way.

Her research investigated the Buddhist practice of fangsheng; the process of releasing captive animals to obtain good karma. This implementation of fangsheng has introduced large quantities of non-native species to China’s environment and heavily influenced the likelihood of a non-native species becoming invasive, which has caused numerous problems to the ecological cycle. She will then analyze the impact of fangsheng and proposes solutions to resolve these issues.

Read more about her research here…
