• Festival Assistants - Help out with tasks as they arise, including set up, break down, lantern-making, and clearing the parade route - two shifts:
  • 2pm-5pm
  • 5pm-8pm
• Costume Contest Assistants - Meet at stage at 3pm - Patient, outgoing individuals will help guide participants (children) to and from the stage for the costume contest. Costumes for assistants are optional.
• Parking Attendants - three shifts:
  • 8am-12pm
  • 12pm-4pm
  • 4pm-7pm
• Float Carriers - 30 spots, line up at 6pm: Carry a float in the parade!  Be at the center of the action!
• Clean Up Crew - 10 spots starting at 9pm: We need as many people as possible to help clean up after the festival is over!

Briefly describe your internship, co-op,  or research opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

egta is a non-profit association based in Brussels, Belgium. It is the European trade association for marketers of advertising solutions across television screens, audio and web based platforms. It has the aim to help its members protect, grow and diversify their business around content edited and broadcast on a linear basis by their TV channels and radio stations.

I was honored to be selected as an international intern at egta where I assisted in creating an animated video, powerpoint presentations, designed templates and other resources which were used in their major events. My communication tasks included writing emails, updating the egta databases and website, assisting in "egtabite" delivery to company's members, along with numerous other design, administrative and organizational tasks. I worked and communicated with international members of the company and colleagues in order to gain valuable experience in an international setting. By attending work meetings and speaker presentations at egta's events, I learned valuable marketing and communication skills as well as valuable information about the TV and radio industry.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

In the fall of 2015, I had an amazing experience studying a semester in Berlin, Germany. After this experience I knew I wanted to return to Europe to study and work again.  Upon returning to UMBC I started to scout internship opportunities  on the internet and through networking at UMBC.  I learned about the opportunity to intern at egta in Belgium and found it appealing because of its relevance to my field of study.  I applied to an internship position  by submitting a cover letter and resume to the contact person at egta. I then exchanged emails and a skype based interview with the the TV Director. They offered me the intern position and I accepted it. I then prepared my flight and other travel details to Brussels. I moved to Belgium and began my internship once I finished my Spring semester finals.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

I enjoyed the work place atmosphere provided at egta. I enjoyed contributing to egta's main events and seeing the result of my work as the events took place. I enjoyed meeting and working with people from different countries throughout Europe. It was very interesting living and working in an international setting. In my free time, I was able to explore Brussels and other areas of Belgium and Europe. 

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

During the internship I created a variety of resources for egta. After leaving my position the company continues to use the resources I created. I made two videos that are featured on egta's web page and I edited their communication system and website that they will continue to utilize. I helped them in a variety of ways which I believed has benefited them. 

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

My advice is to keep an open mind and put yourself out there. If you want a certain experience, do work and research on your own time to find a way to make that experience possible. Rejection is just a part of the process so don’t be afraid to apply and contact a company because of the chance of rejection.

Critical Social Justice 101: Foundations of Home – 12PM to 1PM in Commons 331 – A moderated panel discussion exploring a few of the many interpretations of how our theme of “home” relates to social justice. Panelists include: Dr. Kate Drabinski (Gender + Women’s Studies), Dr. Kimberly Moffitt (American Studies), and Dr. Thania Muñoz Davaslioglu (Modern Languages, Linguistics & Intercultural Communication).

Critical Interactions – 7:30PM to 9PM in University Center 310 – Peer facilitators and recent program participants will share their experiences with the INTERACT program, a Student Affairs initiative housed in Chesapeake Hall followed by a hands-on educational experience where attendees will craft, discuss and question what makes a home. Sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs.

October 25th | Tuesday

Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha Keynote Lecture: “Body/ Land/ Home: Disability Justice, Healing Justice and Femme of Color Brilliance” – Doors open at 5:30PM, keynote begins at 6PM in the UC Ballroom – A meet-and-greet reception and book-signing will follow the keynote. Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha is a disabled femme of color writer and performance artist whose award-winning work on disability, survivorhood, and transformative justice speaks to the many complexities inherent in navigating our way home. Social Justice Activism Workshop – 12PM to 1PM in the Women’s Center – Learn practical skills for organizing activist projects, discuss strategies for navigating common challenges, and gain new insights into how you can create change on campus or in your community. Sponsored by the Women’s Center.

Shelter from the Storm: Mosaic Center Roundtable – 4PM to 5:30PM in Commons 329 – A roundtable discussion with students, alumni and community activists about the home challenges faced by LGBTQ youth. Intersectional perspectives of race, ethnicity, national origin, religion and socioeconomic class will be explored. Sponsored by Student Life’s Mosaic: Center for Culture and Diversity.

October 27th | Thursday

Who Gets a Home in College? – 11:30AM to 12:30PM on Commons Main Street – Panelists will discuss how institutional barriers impact the ways marginalized students find (or don’t find) themselves at home on campus. Panelists include: Dr. Nicole Cousin-Gossett (Sociology, Anthropology & HAPP), Dr. Danyelle Ireland (Center for Women in Technology), and Dr. Santiago Solis (Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs/Diversity at Towson University). 11AM to 1PM – Exhibit in recognition of the Women’s Center’s 25th anniversary. Walking Tour of a Baltimore Neighborhood – 12PM to 3PM, meet in the Women’s Center – Join us for a 90-minute walking tour of a Baltimore neighborhood to learn about its history and present from a social justice lens. Led by Dr. Kate Drabinski. Free tickets available at the CIC desk during October.

The Program and School Relationship Coordinator partners with schools, artists, and community organizations to meet their needs for art and arts integrated programming.
