No one can tell you what kind of person you are, and no one can make you feel like your contributions to the world are insignificant. Additionally, its important not to let anyone tell you what kind of person you are, or allow an incorrect media representation of people who look like you tell you how you're supposed to be. Still, one of my favorite events has been Polaris Night, which was an event partnering with Intervarsity Christian Fellowship to raise funds and awareness for a human trafficking prevention organization. This was one of the first events that I have ever helped to organize. While it wasn't completely flawless in execution, we raised enough money to keep a human trafficking prevention hotline running for at least a full day. As a result, many men and women will have an opportunity to seek help in escaping slavery.

Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"

PROMISE & SREB (@SREBDocSch). Join us in Tampa, Oct. 2016! #ThinkBigDiversity

Greetings PROMISE participants! You are invited to join us for our PROMISE trip to the 2016 Southern Regional Education Board’s Compact for Faculty Diversity/Institute for Teaching and Mentoring. Each year, as an AGEP family, we travel together to the SREB conference in either Atlanta, Virginia, or Tampa. The October 2016 conference is in Tampa, Florida, and we’re inviting you to go. The website for “The Compact” is here: http://www.instituteonteachingandmentoring.org/. We repeat what we said last year, “If you went to the 2016 PROMISE SSI on August 20, 2016, think of The Compact as SSI … quadrupled!”

There are nearly 1000 early career faculty, postdocs, and graduate students from around the U.S. at the conference. In order to go, you need to be nominated by the PROMISE AGEP. Read some of our former posts for the SREB conference from 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015 here.

YOU can go with us to Florida! This is all-expenses paid trip that includes flight, select meals, and lodging. This invitation is for graduate students who plan to actively pursue faculty careers. PROMISE must nominate you. You cannot nominate yourself. We will take as many people as we can, depending on funding. One year, we had so many great responses that we received additional funding and we took 30 people! Funding is limited this year, so please read through the information below.

Here are some facts about the conference:

The 23rd Annual Compact for Faculty Diversity Institute on Teaching and Mentoring will be held at the Marriott Tampa Waterside Hotel & Marina, Tampa, Florida from Thursday – Sunday, October 27 – 30, 2016. SREB expects to exceed 1,100 in attendance.

This is the last year of the grant from NSF that will provide funds to support AGEP/STEM scholar’s attendance to the Compact for Faculty Diversity Institute on Teaching and Mentoring. Scholars nominated to attend the Institute must be individuals who have an expressed interest in teaching at the post-secondary level. All of the sessions at the Institute will focus on topics and issues related to teaching and mentoring at the postsecondary level. Consequently, scholars who are not interested in teaching at the postsecondary level would not benefit from attending this Institute.

Per SREB’s instructions: “Nominated scholars must be minority or underserved STEM majors enrolled in a Ph.D. program. SREB will not accept nominations from students.”

SREB will pay for the following:

Lodging in a double room (2 persons per room) for 3 nights @ $92.50 per night including tax – $277.50 per scholar.

All conference meals (Thursday evening to Sunday morning excluding dinner on Thursday and Saturday evening) -$240 per scholar

Registration fee (includes all conference materials) – $350 per scholar.

The total cost that we will pay for each scholar is $867.50

AGEP campuses are asked to pay for the flights. The total package to attend will be approximately $1100 per person.

Single rooms will not be available for scholars. Please do not to ask for single rooms. If you are chosen, you must select a roommate. You will be placed in double rooms. If you are chosen, you should indicate the name of the person that you would like to room with while at the Institute when you receive your registration code. If you do not select a roommate, we will assign them a roommate. If you are not willing to share a room, you will not be nominated.

Given the limitation of funds, SREB will not be able to pay for graduates as they have done in the past. If scholar attended the Institute in 2015 or 2014 and wants to attend to participate in the Friday Awards Ceremony, they will have to pay the cost of attendance.

Faculty/Staff: The Institute will schedule some sessions that are specifically designed for faculty/staff. If faculty or staff would like to attend the Institute, place their names on the spreadsheet. They will be issued the appropriate ID so they can register online for the Institute. An invoice can be sent after the Institute. SREB will not pay for faculty or staff.

We will be nominating graduate students who participate in the PROMISE: AGEP-T. This means that you must be a graduate student at one of the institutions within the University System of Maryland. If you are interested, you must show evidence of participation in a PROMISE AGEP event prior to September 12, 2016 .

Day One: Out of His Fullness

John 1:14, 16 - “The Word became fleshand made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of graceand truth. Out of his fullness we have all received grace upon grace.”

At one point one man prayed the words ofJohn 1:14-16 . . . Forfrom his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.

It was one of those epiphany moments for me. God granted in that moment that the word “fullness” carry a fullness that was extraordinary in its effect on me. Why did this fullness have such an impact on me? In part because…

. . . the one from whose fullness I am being drenched with grace is the Wordthat was with God and was God, so that his fullness is the fullness of God — a divine fullness, an infinite fullness;. . . this Word became flesh and so was one of us and was pursuing us with his fullness — it is an accessible fullness;. . . when this Word appeared in human form, his glorywas seen — his is a glorious fullness;. . . this Word was “the only Son from the Father” so that the divine fullness was being mediated to me not just from God, but through God — God did not send an angel but his only Son to deliver his fullness;. . . the fullness of the Son is a fullness of grace — I will not drown in this fullness but be blessed in every way by this fullness;. . . this fullness is not only a fullness of grace but of truth — I am not being graced with truth-ignoring flattery; this grace is rooted in rock-solid reality.
(Taken from John Piper’s devotional at desiringgod.org.)

Today, let’s praise and thank God for his love communicated to us in Jesus Christ. Let’s receive his heart more and more that communicated to us in our “language.”

While there are many ways to stop external bleeding, current methods for stopping internal bleeding are limited.

Erin Lavik, professor of chemical, biochemical and environmental engineering, developed a nanoparticle that helps the body form blood clots and reduce internal bleeding. During the American Chemical Society’s national meeting, Lavik presented her work and explained how these nanoparticles could save lives.

“Compared to injuries that aren’t treated with the nanoparticles, we can cut the bleeding time in half and reduce total blood loss,” she explained.

Lavik and her team worked to create nanoparticles that attach to activated platelets so that clots can be formed to stop internal bleeding. These nanoparticles were initially developed and tested on rodents, to control bleeding due to brain and spinal cord injuries, but Lavik saw their potential to help people who have suffered a broader range of severe traumas.

After early testing revealed the nanoparticles successfully kept rodents from bleeding out, Lavik wanted to determine how human blood would respond to the presence of the nanoparticles. As a next step, the nanoparticles were tested in pig’s blood, which indicated that the immune system reacted well their presence.

In the future, Lavik and her team will test the nanoparticles in human blood, and will develop tests to fully understand the safety of these nanoparticles. She says they need to understand whether the particles may cause clotting that could lead to stroke before the product can be on the market, although she hopes the nanoparticles will eventually be available for clinical use.
