Jeffrey Halverson called on to explain Ellicott City flood

<Tagline>The Washington Post and WAMU radio turn to this UMBC expert</Tagline>

This story first appeared on news.umbc.edu and was written by Sarah Hansen.

The devastating flash flood that hit Ellicott City, Maryland, last Saturday night was so severe that meteorologists called it a once-in-a-thousand-years event. What conditions colluded to transform a quaint main street into a torrent of water in a matter of minutes? The Washington Post and WAMU radio both turned to Jeffrey Halverson, professor of geography and environmental systems, to explain.

Air currents from across the region converged over Ellicott City “in a manner that would literally squeeze moisture out of the atmosphere,” wrote Halverson in the Post. The extremely high humidity meant there was plenty to squeeze out. But what made it even worse was the large amount of buoyant energy feeding updraft currents. The more energy, “the more water vapor is lofted into the clouds and processed as rain,” says Halverson.

On top of that, a process called “back-building convection” resulted in several storm cells moving through the area, creating a much longer-lasting event than the traditional summer thunderstorm.

Perhaps the scariest part, though, is that even the most sophisticated computer models cannot predict the exact location of these events. “It becomes a ‘now-casting’ exercise,” says Halverson, “and there is almost never any lead time.”

But it’s not only the meteorological conditions that are to blame for the devastation Saturday night. “The flood was as much about the nature of the underlying land surface as it was about the large amount of rain falling from the sky,” Halverson told WAMU. The narrow streets, large amount of pavement, and valley geography of Old Ellicott City make it especially vulnerable to a flash flood.

“Ellicott City happened to be ground zero for a process that had very laser-like focus,” Halverson explained. “Humble rain, often gentle, is life-sustaining, nourishing, and thus benign 99 percent of the time,” he says. “But what we take for granted sometimes quickly turns deadly.”

UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski and Provost Philip Rous reached out to the UMBC community following the storm, expressing condolences to the families of two individuals who lost their lives, one of whom was an employee at University of Baltimore. Pres. Hrabowski also called on campus experts, like Halverson, to “share their knowledge and resources to help address issues to reduce future flood risk in the area.”

Recovery is a major, long-term process, but one that the area’s residents are already supporting through donations and volunteer service. As Pres. Hrabowski shared, “Ellicott City is a part of us.”

Manil Suri is one of just 15 leading experts worldwide awarded a prestigious academic residency for September 2016 at the The Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center in Italy. During the upcoming residency, Suri, a professor of mathematics, will work on his current book project, The Godfather of Numbers.

As an arts and literary arts resident, Suri is now part of a 56-year legacy that includes Nobel laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners, artists, social entrepreneurs, and activists and the selection is recognition of his ability to promote the well-being of humanity around the world.

The residency program is made up of leading academics, artists, thought leaders, policymakers, and practitioners who have been recognized for their bold thinking and promise to further change the world for the better.

“The Foundation’s Bellagio Residency Program has a track record for supporting the generation of important new knowledge addressing some of the most complex issues facing our world, and innovative new works of art that inspire reflection and understanding of global and social issues,” according to a description about the program on the Rockefeller Foundation’s website.

In a short biography announcing September’s Bellagio residents, the foundation states: “Suri’s The Godfather of Numbers is a novel that aims to posit mathematics as the basis of all creation with The Godfather of Numbers as the narrator who initiates a mathematical big bang to create the counting numbers out of nothingness. His foremost objective for the book is to create a compelling piece of fiction and to allow readers an entry into the world of mathematics which does not assume mathematical expertise. While bringing out mathematics’ playful aspects for a wide target audience, he also wants to provide insight into how it works invisibly in so much of the universe. Mathematics is a much-maligned and poorly understood subject, and he hopes the book is a step towards reducing the anxiety surrounding it.”

Zoophile Florida Man Blames Dolphin's Suicide On Himself

  <Tagline>Man-Boy Dolphin Love.</Tagline>

Dolly the Dolphin died of a broken heart. At least that's how Malcolm Brenner sees it.

Some would call Brenner, who had sex with Dolly more than four decades ago, noble or a pervert or an animal abuser or, at the very least, a horny man that couldn't afford a fleshlight. But to this day, Brenner, who is now the subject of a documentary, describes the encounter as a beautiful, almost spiritual experience.

The two met in 1970 when the New College of Florida student was on his first freelance photography assignment. He was supposed to take pictures for a book about Sarasota's Floridaland—one of those hokey roadside attractions that populated the Sunshine State before multimillion-dollar theme parks pushed them out. Soon, however, he was sidetracked by the dolphin.

Dolly swam to the other side of the tank when the unfamiliar human with horn-rimmed glasses and shoulder-length curls first jumped in. She eventually came around, says Brenner, who photographed the dolphin for nine months. Once, as he was rubbing her back, Dolly flipped over to present her genital slit. Later, she started rubbing her teeth on the photographer's arm in what he describes as an erotic way. When he wouldn't give her what she wanted, Dolly would retaliate by pushing him 12 feet underwater.

Read the rest of this juicy love story at the link below.

Florida Man Spent 36 years In Jail Over 4-year Theft Charge

    <Tagline>Prolonged by seven successful escapes</Tagline>

You da man dog, but too bad you kept getting recaptured.

Some of the details are hard to remember. After all, Don Gladish said, he hasn’t worked at Florida State Prison for years. But yes, he does remember Mark DeFriest.

“Mark DeFriest,” Gladish said. “Yes, know him well.”

Defriest is known as the “prison Houdini,” a man who has spent years confounding and frustrating corrections officials — and has famously spent years paying for it, too. He’s the subject of a documentary. You might have seen his name in news reports before.

Gladish, who is now retired, remembers DeFriest from the Florida State Prison, where Gladish used to work as a corrections officer, sergeant and lieutenant. DeFriest was an inmate with a bit of a reputation.

“He was an escape artist,” Gladish told The Washington Post this week. “He was probably one of the most brilliant inmates that, in my career, that I ever remember.”

There were, Gladish said, just very few places that could ever contain DeFriest, security-wise. His cell was almost always on the second floor, if Gladish could recall. That’s where corrections officers would put inmates they really needed to monitor, if you know what he means. (Remember how he said DeFriest was an escape artist? That’s what he means.)

“He’s out of prison now, isn’t he?” Gladish asked.

Well. Not exactly.

Mark DeFriest is now 56 years old. Most of his life has been spent in Florida’s prison system. DeFriest was initially imprisoned as a young man, convicted of taking his father’s tools after his death. He was supposed to spend a few years behind bars.

Read the rest at the UMBC approved newspaper.

68th Student Conference on U.S. Affairs

The Political Science
Department is accepting applications to the the 68th Annual Student Conference
on U.S. Affairs (SCUSA) at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, New York.
This is an excellent opportunity to get involved in international and security
debates with a large number of students and experts from around the country.

Every year, the Department sends two students to
represent UMBC at this conference. Past participants have found the conference
to be extremely rewarding. The Department covers registration fees and
transportation to West Point, while the conference organizers provide room and
board while there. If you are interested, please send a brief (one paragraph)
letter of interest, including why you would like to go, what makes you qualified
to represent the Department and your GPA to: Dr. Brian Grodsky,bgrodsky@umbc.edu. All
applications must be received by September 19.

For more information, see below.

On behalf of Colonel Suzanne Nielsen, the head of the
Department of Social Sciences, I would like to extend an invitation to the
University of Maryland, Baltimore County, to send two student delegates to
participate in the 68th Annual Student Conference on U.S. Affairs (SCUSA), hosted
by the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. The conference meets from
    November 9th through November 12th, 2016.
West Point hosts SCUSA every fall, and it is the oldest and largest
undergraduate conference of its type in the world. Approximately 200
undergraduate students from over 100 colleges and universities around the world
attend SCUSA. Throughout the conference, the student delegates and cadets
debate and formulate policy recommendations that realistically model American
strategic responses to significant national and global challenges. The
highlights of the four-day conference include the opening senior panel
discussion on the evening of November 9th, an evening keynote banquet address,
four roundtable sessions, and a closing-report session on November 12th. Recent
keynote speakers have included Secretary Madeleine Albright, Ambassador Thomas
Pickering, Lieutenant General (Ret.) Brent Scowcroft, and Admiral James
    Stavridis. Our organizing theme this
year is "Democracy & Democratization: Challenges &
Opportunities." Beginning the day after the U.S. presidential election,
the conference invites participants to consider the challenges and
opportunities facing the United States as it responds to key questions
concerning the health and future of democracy. Among the questions to be
explored are: what are the political, normative, and material limits to
promoting democracy in the world? Does democracy confront greater challenges in
some countries and regions? How does political radicalism in its many forms
challenge democracy? What does the survival of authoritarian and hybrid regimes
indicate about the long-term prospects for democracy internationally? Can
    democracy successfully navigate ethno-religious conflict?
