This research is particularly relevant due to the increasing volume of deterritorialized and localized narratives circulating within the global television format trade. She will conduct a cross-cultural analysis of components like narrative structure, sound, music, camera, lighting, and dialogue and demonstrated how these contribute to adapting for cultural proximity in the new setting. This comparative methodology led to an analysis of cultural components such as gender, masculinity, and community.

Setting New Technology Standards in Existing Seminar Rooms

<Tagline>How AV services can upgrade your seminar room technology</Tagline>

In the Information Technology and Engineering Building (ITE), room 325B was just a simple conference room. Equipped with just a projector and a single VGA cable for input, the connectivity options were severely limited. A tall audio visual (AV) rack in the corner of the room housed all sorts of outdated inputs, from VHS to DVD. The room was just not equipped to match the technological needs of today, but AV services changed all that by working with the CSEE department to meet their needs.

What ITE 325B used to look like. In the corner of the room was a large AV rack with lots of outdated technology and overhead was a loud projector that dimly displayed presentations.

“After over 125 installs, what works best is second nature.”

Jack Malone, lead technician for DoIT’s AV Services is no stranger to the process of upgrading rooms. His job involves speccing equipment, finding resources, and even installing these upgrades into the rooms. Malone knows what works best with varying rooms, such as ITE 325B. “After over 125 installs, what works best is second nature.” said Malone. “Rooms, for the most part, organize themselves. In this case [for ITE 325B], and rooms like it, our decision is already made as to where to locate our equipment.”

Once determining where the new equipment is going to go, it’s just a matter of what the room needs. Malone doesn't work alone in figuring out what a room needs, and instead collaborates with another AV Specialist named Danielle Brown.

“...We plan based on the needs of the department…”

Brown is also no stranger to AV upgrades. After being a full time AV Specialist for 2 years, she's equipped over 50 spaces with AV upgrades and installs. She wrote the proposal for the project and designed the system in ITE 325B with help from Malone. In addition to that, she got quotes on equipment and selected which vendors to use based on who gave her the best price.

“Like any install we do, we plan based on the needs of the department and what they ultimately want to use the space for.” said Brown.

For ITE 325B, the main focus of the department was presentations and conferences. The room was actually equipped to handle that, which helped Brown and Malone quite a bit. “In this case, some of those components were already installed,” said Brown. “so we were able to retain some parts of the existing system and incorporate them into the upgrade to save time and money.”

Before AV Services stepped in, the room was just equipped with a dim projector along with a VGA input. Now, the room features a 90 inch HD television with easily accessible HDMI input, allowing for bright and crisp presentations. Older devices that connect to the TV have their signal upscaled thanks to a newly built in scaler, which helps with image clarity.

A before and after comparison in the AV rack changes. Gone are the VHS inputs and other older technology. Instead, the new, much shorter and more compact AV housing holds a blu Ray player, a built in scaler that up converts any non HDMI signal to 1080p, and controls mounted on the top of the housing for quick and easy access.

“Elegant infrastructure gets oohs and ahhhs.”

AV Services strives for elegance when they upgrade your room. Malone reflects this with elegant hardware like the built in scaler which allows to convert any source to 1080p, preventing the need to configure your display settings before you project your screen on the TV. “To me, elegant infrastructure gets oohs and ahhs and it blends into the environment.” said Malone.

What most departments aren't aware of that this type of work can be done in-house rather than contracting these jobs outside of UMBC which is why AV Services wants to spread the word that they are happy to consult with departments to build, design, and install systems. The cost to the department is the equipment provided to them. “At the very least, we can work with them to come up with a low-budget solution. If they decide not to pursue there is no money wasted on labor or consulting costs.” said Brown.

“We would love to hear from any department interested in making changes…”

Not every room will be like ITE 325B and AV Services understands that. If they are frequently performing maintenance on a departmental space or have a lot of break-fix tickets coming in from a space, they will contact the department to help them improve the system so they have something that works more reliably.

There are no set packages to request for your room and AV Services works directly with the department to determine their needs at a cost that saves both time and money. “We would love to hear from any department interested in making changes to their instructional technology.” said Brown.

If your department has a space they are looking to upgrade, you can submit an RT ticket to the Classroom Technology queue. In addition, you can call and set up a meeting with the AV Services team.

The renovated ITE 325B conference room. Equipped with a 90” HDTV and support for HDMI input. A distinct advantage of the TV compared to the typical projector is a brighter, more detailed image.

UMB-UMBC Partnership Symposium

  <Tagline>celebrates research collaborations across campuse</Tagline>

July 8, 2016 by Sarah Hansen

UMBC and the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) celebrated new
and recent recipients of UMB-UMBC Research and Innovation Partnership
Grants at a symposium held last month on UMB’s downtown Baltimore
    campus.

This annual event seeks to actively support the growth of meaningful
and sustainable research collaborations between the two universities.
The June 2016 symposium highlighted the milestones of past partnership
grant recipients and celebrated a new round of awardees: five teams of
two, with faculty from all three colleges at UMBC as well as UMB’s
School of Medicine, School of Pharmacy, School of Dentistry, and School
    of Social Work.

In recognition of the power of collaborative research, Karl V. Steiner,
vice president for research at UMBC, shared, “This is another brick in
the pavement as we’re building a road between our two campuses.”

Aaron White, senior scientific advisor to the director at the
National Institutes of Health-National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and
Alcoholism (NIH-NIAAA), delivered a keynote focused on the diagnosis,
prevention, and treatment of alcohol addiction. In addition to having a
major negative impact on so many lives, White noted, alcohol addiction
costs the U.S. nearly $250 billion dollars each year.

Following White’s remarks, the 2014-15 Research and Innovation
Partnership Seed Grant teams each presented updates on their work,
including goals for the upcoming year.

Toni Antalis, professor of physiology at the UMB School of Medicine;
Rajabrata Sarkar, professor of surgery at UMB School of Medicine; and Zeev Rosenzweig,
professor of chemistry and biochemistry at UMBC collaborated to develop
a targeted therapy that increases blood flow to the limbs of patients
with artery blockages resulting from diabetes, stroke, or other causes.
With the prevalence of diabetes rising dramatically in this country,
it’s critical to find ways to prevent the need for last-resort
    treatments like amputation.

When an artery experiences blockage, the nearby arteries expand to
compensate, a process called “arteriogenesis.” When a specific protein
called “p53” is deleted, the arteriogenesis response is stronger.
However, p53 is also a critical tumor suppressor, so deleting it
throughout the entire body or for an extended period of time is
dangerous. The team is developing a new technique using nanoparticles to
carry a drug that blocks p53 to carefully targeted immune cells, which
pick up the particles and deliver the drug where it is needed. The team
has shown that the new therapy effectively reduces p53 activity and
increases arteriogenesis, which is maintained after treatment stops
    after 14 days.

Aryya Gangopadhyay, professor and chair of the department of information systems; Nirmalya Roy,
assistant professor of information systems; and Elizabeth Galik,
associate professor in UMB’s School of Nursing; have developed and
implemented a smart health technology for people with Alzheimer’s or
symptoms of the disease. The technology monitors the cognitive
impairment of older adults to help them maintain independence. They
worked with a senior community center to fit some residents with
wearable sensors to assess cognitive function by monitoring everyday
activities like making a sandwich, sweeping the floor, washing hands,
    and folding clothes.

Radi Masri, associate professor of endodontics, prosthodontics and
operative dentistry at the UMB School of Dentistry; David Seminowicz,
assistant professor of neural and pain sciences at the UMB School of
Dentistry; and Raimi Quiton, assistant professor of
psychology at UMBC, are working together to elucidate pain processing in
migraines, the third most common cause of pain in the U.S. They hope to
discover neural pathways that could be new targets for treatment,
because current treatments are ineffective for a large percentage of
    migraine sufferers.

The team showed that a brain area known as the superior colliculus
could be involved in processing migraine pain. The superior colliculus
is known to integrate many types of sensory information, which might
help explain symptoms such as sensitivity to light, sound, and touch.
They also found that individuals who experience migraines have
chronically high levels of a protein that is known to transmit pain
signals. One next step for their research is to see how mice respond to
pain stimuli if the neural signal is prevented from passing through the
    superior colliculus.

The final presentation examined how drugs are evaluated to develop a
more effective way to test the effects of drugs on different cells
simultaneously. To assess their new testing method, Ronghui Ma, associate professor of mechanical engineering; Liang Zhu,
professor of mechanical engineering, and Hongbing Wong, professor in
UMB’s School of Pharmacy, developed a specialized 3D-printed plate with
    multiple chambers.

The 2016-2017 winners span several several departments and centers at UMBC and schools at UMB. On the “challenge track,” Xudong Ge,
UMBC Center for Advanced Sensor Technology (CAST) and Richard Pierson,
UMB School of Medicine, will pursue development of a non-invasive
respiratory status monitor. Chris Geddes, UMBC chemistry and
biochemistry and Institute of Fluorescence, and Colin Stine, UMB School
of Medicine, will work on the ultra-rapid and sensitive detection of
    cholera.

“Seed track” winners include Elsa Garcin, UMBC chemistry and biochemistry, with Patrick Wintrode, UMB School of Pharmacy; Soobum Lee, UMBC mechanical engineering, with Mary Melo, UMB School of Dentistry; and Christine Mair, UMBC sociology and anthropology, with Amanda Lehning, UMB School of Social Work.

UMBC President Freeman Hrabowski and UMB Chief Academic and
Research Officer Bruce Jarrell offered closing remarks focused on their
shared commitment to building a close relationship between the two
universities for years to come. UMB and UMBC have complementary
strengths, Pres. Hrabowski explained. Programs like the UMB-UMBC
Partnership Grants, he said, help both universities fulfill their
potential as national leaders in innovative research and teaching.

Roommate wanted (female)! RENT AT $410!

Hello! My name is Timmy (just a nickname, I'm a female), and I am looking for one more roommate for the upcoming school year. I plan on renting a townhouse within the Gwynnbrook Townhomes community. The rent would be $410 per person excluding utilities, but the wifi and electricity altogether shouldn't be more than $90/month. The community is between 10-15 minutes from campus but is literally right next to 695 so there's still quick access to get wherever you need to go in a timely fashion. If interested, please email or text me and I can send pics of the house and get you more info!

Room Available for Rent on Westland Blvd, 21227. 20 min walking distance from the UMBC library, 30 min from Sherman Hall, you get the idea.

Rent $350 or less depending on whether the owner decides to review the lease terms or not. Utilities not included but Water bill paid by landlord so utilities would be BGE and Wi-Fi which average out to a max of $50 per month.

All current tenants are students, so ideal for other students looking to unwind and relax when they get back from school or from work. Washer and Dryer provided by owner in the laundry room in basement.

No smoking, no pets, parties only after prior notification (common courtesy to us students), prompt monthly payments for BGE and Wi Fi. Don't be mislead by this somber ad. Just trying to be as transparent as possible.
