Saudi Students Selected to Participate in Unique Northrop Grumman Externship Program in US

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia -- June 28, 2016 -- Two Saudi students have been selected by Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) for a summer externship in the United States, where they will participate in a work-study program with companies affiliated with the renowned business incubator program at the bwtech@UMBC research and technology park of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Two of the students were selected from Al Faisal University and flown to the U.S. to participate in the program, which is coordinated in collaboration with both the UMBC English Language Institute and Career Center.

Arwa Al Anqari and Muneera Al Omran will both spend two months in the Baltimore region. Al Anqari is working at Amidus (www.amidus.com), which provides energy analytics, consulting and implementation services to commercial, institutional and governmental clients in the U.S. and internationally. Al Omran will work at Blue Wave Semiconductor (www.bluewavesemi.com), a high technology manufacturing company focused on supplying nanomaterial deposition tools for the research and development market worldwide.

During the externship program with bwtech@UMBC, students will learn effective entrepreneurial and technical skills in cyber program management and engineering; increase their knowledge of products and solutions to government and commercial customers; improve their business, English technical writing and professional communications skills; and gain effective hands-on experience with a technology company. The program represents a valuable opportunity for the participants, both Saudi women, to develop new expertise in a field where women have historically been underrepresented.

Commenting on the externship initiative, Walid Abukhaled, chief executive, Northrop Grumman Middle East Region, said: "This type of hands-on training is vital for Saudi students, especially Saudi females, who have traditionally been introduced to high technology on a theoretical level rather than receiving practical training.

"Through this innovative program, Northrop Grumman supports Saudi Arabia's efforts to diversify its economy, transfer of knowledge and make sure its youth have the skills needed to successfully implement the recently announced 2030 vision."

The externship adds to Northrop Grumman's continuing effort to support knowledge transfer and to increase the percentage of Saudis pursuing science and technology careers. Earlier this year, the company signed a new education and training initiative with King Saud University and began an educational tour of Saudi universities with a program focused on cybersecurity awareness.

The bwtech@UMBC community is a center of innovation for businesses in all different stages of development. Located near Baltimore-Washington International Airport, bwtech@UMBC brings research, entrepreneurship, business leads, prospective clients and economic development in the Maryland region to one singular place—a place full of like-minded businesses on the forefront of innovation.
University System of MD divests from fossil fuels: Balt. Sun

The Baltimore Sun reported on USM's recent commitment to stop investing in fossil fuels, energy sources that contribute to climate change and polluting emissions. The article states "The foundation that oversees the state university system's $1 billion endowment said Tuesday that it will stop investing directly in coal, oil and natural gas companies — a victory for a student-led movement to direct more of the portfolio toward clean energy.

The University System of Maryland Foundation, which helps fund scholarships, endowed professorships and more, said it would sign on to a United Nations pledge to be more socially aware in its investments, and appoint a staff person to identify opportunities in renewable energy." They also stated:

"It's because of the students and the positions they took that caused us to focus on it this year," said Leonard Raley, president and CEO of the foundation. "But the world is changing and we're paying attention to it. We're concerned about climate change and I think the actions that our foundation took reflect that."

"More than ever climate change is affecting the lives and livelihoods of people around the world," said Lindsay Meiman, a spokeswoman for 350.org. "With the impact of climate change hitting harder every day, we need everyone to do everything in their power to do everything they can to address this crisis."

"Maya Spaur, a member of the Student Government Association at the University of Maryland, College Park, said students who organized for the shift were pleased with the announcement, but wanted to see the foundation focus on direct investments in clean energy companies and shift away from investments in indexes that may include fossil fuel stocks.

"I thought it was definitely progress," said Spaur, 20, of Mount Airy. But "we need to keep pushing further if we really want to be a green model for the nation."

Students at College Park began the push to divest from fossil fuels in 2013, circulating a petition with nearly 600 signatures from students at Towson University, the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and other colleges."

Students have been at the leading edge of calling for action on climate change for many years, including successfully lobbying all USM presidents to sign on to the "American Colleges and Universities President's Climate Commitment.

Women in technology are a driving force behind Maryland’s position as a technology powerhouse. In fact, Maryland ranks second among the states in the ratio of female to male workers in IT occupations (24%), according to ComTIA’s Cyberstates analysis.

The national average for women who hold computer and mathematical positions is 26.5%, however in Baltimore, women hold 31.2% of these positions. This, combined with a below average gender pay gap, puts Baltimore fourth in SmartAsset’s “Best Cities for Women in Tech” rankings.

See a trend? We do.

We saw an even greater trend when we started researching to find some of the state’s female tech leaders. There are so many women leading technology companies, conducting critical government work in technology, and breaking new ground in developing new technologies. It’s not just a few names out there. There are countless women in technology who are thriving here in Maryland.

Forno made clear that there is no
single, permanent solution to thwarting cyber threats, and a single

“All it takes is one person who does something wrong”—opening an email or plugging in a thumb-drive containing malware—“to place the entire organization at risk,” he says.

Forno also focused on the challenge
of educating people about how to practice safe computing, and turning
those practices into regular habits. The issues that arise with
computing are as much human-based as they are technology-based, he
suggests, plus, “You attack one problem and three more pop up the next
    day.”

To understand how a hack happened and
to prevent hackers from taking advantage of vulnerabilities in the
future, Forno suggests collecting and analyzing “artifacts” of the
attack—things the hackers left behind—and heightening ongoing monitoring of key systems, approaches the DNC is likely now taking.

Rick Forno discusses DNC hack on NPR

On June 14, the Democratic National Committee announced that its computer system had been hacked. Rick Forno, director of UMBC’s graduate program in cybersecurity and assistant director of the UMBC Center for Cybersecurity, discussed the “ongoing process” of stopping such attacks during a long-form discussion segment on the WOSU Radio’s “All Sides” show.

Forno made clear that there is no single, permanent solution to thwarting cyber threats, and a single mistake or vulnerability can have a major impact on digital security.. “All it takes is one person who does something wrong”—opening an email or plugging in a thumb-drive containing malware—“to place the entire organization at risk,” he says.

Forno also focused on the challenge of educating people about how to practice safe computing, and turning those practices into regular habits. The issues that arise with computing are as much human-based as they are technology-based, he suggests, plus, “You attack one problem and three more pop up the next day.”

To understand how a hack happened and to prevent hackers from taking advantage of vulnerabilities in the future, Forno suggests collecting and analyzing “artifacts” of the attack—things the hackers left behind—and heightening ongoing monitoring of key systems, approaches the DNC is likely now taking.
