Parking on Campus

<Tagline>A one-page summary of parking restrictions and fees</Tagline>

(From the Adjunct Faculty Advisory Committee)

For adjunct faculty who have found campus parking restrictions
unclear, current conditions are summarized below.

Currently there are
two ways to pay for parking on campus, by permit or by hour. Permits can be
bought in advance. There are two types of permits, daily and yearly.

Daily
parking permits are $2 per day. Available in packs of 10 for $20 online, or as needed if bought in person. One may buy as
many packs as needed, good up to year 2017.

A
yearly permit is available for $260. It allows parking in Zones D, only. This
is on-the-street parking. The permit is good from September 1 to August 31.

Permit parking enforcement:

Permit parking is enforced from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Monday
through Thursday, and Friday from 7:00 to 3:30. p.m.

After 3:30 and
during the summer, from May 19 to August 26, faculty/staff with permits can
also use the A & C zones, which have more spaces.

There is a $40 penalty for parking
          in the wrong zone

Three levels of appeal:

            Waive: $0 additional

Warning: $7 on top of fee

Guilty: $7 on top of fee

Metered Parking

The university
replaced the meters that took quarters in fall 2015. Electronic meters in metered parking lots cost
          $2 per hour.

The
Administration Drive Garage area on top of the garage, near the Retriever
Activities Center, is the largest metered lot. Circling the lot to find a space
may take up to a half hour on the most crowded days, but usually a spot opens
          up.

The
Commons Drive Garage, behind The Commons building, is a small lot. Small lots
almost always filled include Lot 9, near PAHB.

There is a $20 penalty for an expired
          meter

Appeal: $7 on top of fee

Note: Do not appeal meter fines. Appealing on meters does not
          win. Parking Services says
that a meter is either expired or not; no exceptions.

Rick Forno and Anupam Joshi discuss ‘cyberbombs’ in The Conversation

America is ‘dropping cyberbombs’ – but how do they work?

Richard Forno and Anupam Joshi

Recently, United States Deputy Defense Secretary Robert Work publicly confirmed that the Pentagon’s Cyber Command was “dropping cyberbombs,” taking its ongoing battle against the Islamic State group into the online world. Other American officials, including President Barack Obama, have discussed offensive cyber activities, too.

The American public has only glimpsed the country’s alleged cyberattack abilities. In 2012 The New York Times revealed the first digital weapon, the Stuxnet attack against Iran’s nuclear program. In 2013, former NSA contractor Edward Snowden released a classified presidential directive outlining America’s approach to conducting Internet-based warfare.

The terms “cyberbomb” and “cyberweapon” create a simplistic, if not also sensational, frame of reference for the public. Real military or intelligence cyber activities are less exaggerated but much more complex. The most basic types are off-the-shelf commercial products used by companies and security consultants to test system and network security. The most advanced are specialized proprietary systems made for exclusive – and often classified – use by the defense, intelligence and law enforcement communities.

So what exactly are these “cyberbombs” America is “dropping” in the Middle East? The country’s actual cyber capabilities are classified; we, as researchers, are limited by what has been made public. Monitoring books, reports, news events and congressional testimony is not enough to separate fact from fiction. However, we can analyze the underlying technologies and look at the global strategic considerations of those seeking to wage cyber warfare. That work allows us to offer ideas about cyber weapons and how they might be used.

Two UMBC history professors win Berlin Prize fellowships

    Rebecca Boehling

During the fall 2016 semester, Rebecca Boehling will use the fellowship in Berlin to make a comparative assessment of how the United States, Great Britain, and France approached the process of undoing Nazi influences in post-World War II German society. She will examine the divergent theories behind denazification and how they were implemented. From 2013-2015, Boehling was director of the International Tracing Service in Bad Arolsen, Germany.

In spring 2017, Kate Brown will continue her research project by writing a history of human survival in the territories surrounding the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. She is conducting a large-scale, archival-based history of Chernobyl to explore how citizens negotiated daily life with exposures to radioactive isotopes. Last month, Brown received a prestigious research fellowship from the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

“We look forward to welcoming another group of outstanding fellows to the Academy. By working with their peers and partner institutions in Berlin and presenting their projects to the public, they will actively contribute to the exchange of ideas,” said Academy president Gerhard Casper in a news release announcing the 2016-17 awards.

The fellows were chosen by an independent selection committee and they are encouraged to work with individuals and institutions in The American Academy in Berlin’s established network to forge connections and lasting partnerships.

This is the first time that UMBC professors have received the prestigious fellowship. Today, we hear from Samantha Eng ’16, biological sciences.

Name: Samantha Eng

Major: Biological Sciences

Grad Year: 2016

Extracurriculars: Undergraduate Research Award (URA) Scholar, Biology Teaching Assistant, Meyerhoff Program Peer Advisor, UMBC Office of Undergraduate Admissions Student Assistant

Why did you decide to attend UMBC? I was part of the premed college program at Brooklyn Technical High School in NYC. UMBC was one of the schools we visited on our tour of the Baltimore area. I chose UMBC for the school’s dedication to research and the Meyerhoff Scholars Program. When I was applying to colleges, the program’s staff, mentorship, and record of success in encouraging students to pursue graduate studies after UMBC always stood out to me.

What’s been the most amazing discovery you’ve made so far as a student? I am amazed about how much I was able to accomplish and experience during my short time at UMBC. This was made possible by my supportive advisors, mentors, and classmates who constantly motivated me.

What are you most proud of accomplishing during your time at UMBC? I am proud to leave my comfort zone and try new things. UMBC has so many opportunities for students to get involved. I currently study darter fish in Dr. Mendelson’s lab in the Biology Department, serve as a lead teaching assistant for Biology Lab, work in the admissions office, and work closely with my scholarship program. There really is something for everyone as long as you are willing to put yourself out there and participate.

What would you say to the people who provided your scholarship? I am honored to have received the UMBC Alumni Association Scholarship. Thank you for investing in my future as I apply to medical and graduate school programs. I am thankful to those who continue to give back to UMBC and who have really shown me their support.

What do you hope to do after graduation? I hope to study developmental biology in graduate school.

Scholarships like Samantha’s rely on donations from people like you. Please consider making a gift today.

Baltimore Sun highlights UMBC in special section on education, focusing on career preparation and accessible technologies

With intense competition in today’s workforce for entry-level professional positions, internships are a popular way for students to get experience and contribute to companies and government agencies during their undergrad years, and to make the connections that can help them secure a job that matches their skills and interests. Caroline Baker, assistant vice president of careers and corporate partnerships, recently told The Baltimore Sun that employers are also competing with each other to hire top students, particularly in fields such as computer science, information systems, and cybersecurity.

“Because of the demand in hiring, we know that there are great jobs for these students,” she says, noting that UMBC is working to generate more student interest in these fields, especially among women. “We’re trying to break down the perception that cybersecurity professionals work alone in a dark room looking for hackers.”

Employers are hiring students as interns earlier in their college careers to provide them with more in-depth experience in core areas and entice them to consider full-time positions post-graduation. Baker says that previously internships were offered to juniors and seniors only, but recently she has seen sophomores and even some freshmen who have been offered competitive internships.

“It used to be unusual, but now companies are offering jobs at the end of internships,” Baker says. “The competition for talent is high.”

The special Baltimore Sun issue on education that highlighted UMBC’s Career Center also included articles focusing on UMBC’s robust teacher training program and 3D printing.

For future teachers, training to engage with and support diverse student populations is essential. UMBC’s Sherman STEM Teacher Scholars Program addresses the need for highly qualified math and science teachers who also understand the diverse populations that they serve, explains Rehana Shafi, director of the program.

“We support science and math majors who want to be K-12 teachers with professional development in culturally competent practices and offer applied learning in local urban settings,” Shafi says.

The Sherman STEM Teachers Scholars Program also offers support to alumni of the program when they enter the teaching workforce. “We help them see what they’re doing well, and talk about what’s going on in the schools,” she explains.

After Sherman alumnus Corey Carter ’08, biological sciences, ’10 M.A.T., was selected as 2016 Baltimore County Public Schools (BCPS) Teacher of the Year in April, Shafi noted, “Corey’s journey is a wonderful example of why the support provided by the Sherman Scholars Program, both during a student’s time at UMBC and during their first few years teaching, is so important.”

The Sun highlighted the assistive technology work of Amy Hurst, assistant professor of information systems, and her students, in the article “Humanizing Technology.” Hurst’s Prototyping and Design (PAD) lab at UMBC focuses on creating tools to help people with disabilities engineer technologies to fit their needs. William Easley ‘13, information systems, ‘15 ‘M.S. and ‘22 Ph.D., human centered computing; and Erin Buehler ‘14, M.S. and ‘18 Ph.D., human centered computing, taught a class in the Students United for Campus-Community Engagement for Post-Secondary Success (SUCCESS) program, which enabled students with disabilities to design 3D models and learn to operate a 3D printer.

The team is now looking at ways users with different cognitive abilities can use create 3D models as a drawing, mold or form.

“There’s a lot of misconceptions about the level of ability needed to use 3D printers—that you need an engineering background,” says Easley. “But we taught them the basics of 3D printing and the class created their own 3D print shop on campus. In the end, nobody became an expert, but everyone had designed their own model and [participants] were able to print with minimal assistance.”
