As the academic year draws to a close, we thought we might take the time to introduce you to some of our Alumni Association Scholarship recipients. Today, we hear from Amirreza Saharkiz ’16, mechanical engineering.
Name: Amirreza Saharkiz
Major: Mechanical Engineering

Extracurriculars: President of the Persian Student Association, Member of the Honors College, Member of the Mini Baja team, Undergraduate Research Assistant
Why did you decide to attend UMBC? I considered many factors before I [chose] UMBC. First, I like small colleges and because I intended to be an engineer, the only available in-state school for me was UMBC. Also, UMBC offered me several scholarships which made me even more interested [in] attending UMBC.
What’s been the most amazing discovery you’ve made so far as a student here? The most amazing discovery that I found as a student is [that the faculty] at UMBC really care about students’ success, [especially] for undergraduate students.
What are you most proud of accomplishing in your time at UMBC? I have received an Undergraduate Research Award (URA), and [I was also] elected as the president of the Persian Student Association (PSA).
What would you say to the people who provided your scholarship? [You are] great people who care about other people’s success and [have a] great understanding of the obstacles toward higher education.
What do you hope to do after graduation? I have applied for [five Ph.D. programs] and hopefully I can get admitted.

Special Collections continues our archival project Archives Gold: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th, a special series showcasing 50 different objects that tell the story of UMBC. This week we present an ID card of John Haskell Jr., the first full time faculty member and first librarian of UMBC.

In 1965, Chancellor Kuhn hired his first full-time employee--the university's first librarian, John Haskell, Jr. Haskell was only 24 at the time, coming to work straight out of graduate school and a few months of active duty in the Army Reserves. He spent many of the early months leading up to UMBC's opening ordering books, hiring new employees, and creating a catalog ordering system.

Need to assess the success of the pilot and determine next steps including developing protocol for maintaining assignments.
- Explore modifying advisee list to include major for maintenance purposes.
- Requrested by Michele Bulger: In Assign Advisee functionality, develop a mechanism to maintain former student advisee assignments without cluttering faculty's advisee list
- For departments using Assign Advisee functionality, develop a REX report to detail students change from one major to another so that students advisor assignment information can be updated in SA.
The items that have changed are:
Status Summary: In User Acceptance testing in production. All functionality passed UAT and is available in production, and simply waiting to be used.

Hi,
A 2 bedroom/1 bathroom apartment located in Catonsville will be available on July 1st (or late June). It is walking distance to the UMBC shuttle and MTA stop, 8 minutes driving distance to UMBC campus. The rent is about $900/month (including electricity and internet). You can rent for only one bedroom or the entire apartment. The lease ends in August 31, but you can take over the lease if you would like to.
