Emo Kids Still Upset About My Chemical Romance Breakup

The Black Parade came out ten years ago this October. That’s almost a decade of unbearably prepubescent, yet gorgeously composed emo-pop. At the time, if you were an angst-ridden preteen looking for some sick hi-fi riffs to blast while you play Halo 2 or bum around on your skateboard, there wasn’t much in store. Blink-182 had broken up, Good Charlotte was going in the dance-pop direction, and Green Day was taking five years to follow up American Idiot. Maybe if you were realllllly indie you picked up Brand New’s third album in the fall of ’06, but other than that, you were stuck with whatever VH1 had playing in the mornings before school started. And if you were lucky, in between Rihanna’s “SOS” and Fort Minor’s “Where’d You Go?”, you may have seen four fully grown men in white makeup, wearing monochromatic marching band uniforms, dancing around a bonfire, and screaming something about being asleep or dead. This was your new aesthetic.

Tomorrow, the 22nd of March, marks exactly three years since the band’s farewell. Of course, by that point, the culture that bred My Chemical Romance had been replaced by a profoundly irksome wave of metalcore, that is, Silverstein, Asking Alexandria, and Bullet for My Valentine, which were now the go-to teenage angst bands. Alas, pop-punk had been forgotten, but not for 18-year-old Alexander Sampson, who explained his everlasting fondness for the band in a recent interview. “No one has captured the feeling of everlasting youth quite like Gerald Way did on The Black Parade,” he told us. “His lyricism is so relatable. When Gerald sings ‘When I was a young a boy’, I too, feel like a young boy.”

Growing up is weird. As a young adult, all you do is look at all the depressed middle-aged people around you and think, “Man, these people are so lame, but I definitely won’t turn out boring and miserable like them.” And then, at one point, you listen to Fall Out Boy or Panic! At the Disco, and you just don’t feel it anymore. The music you grew up with is now strange and confusing to you. And what about today’s youth? You look at them and you can’t help but think: “Those teenagers scare the living shit out of me.”

The Baltimore Sun and Washington post ran stories on efforts by the University System of Maryland to help faculty and students turn their research into growing businesses. The stories cite work being from at UMBC by CSEE faculty Nilanjan Banerjee, Ryan Robucci and Chintan Patel and their research students.

“UMBC professors Nilanjan Banerjee and Ryan Robucci relied heavily on the university to help them commercialize two types of wearable sensors they invented. One of the sensors, called RestEaze, measures leg movements during sleep, which may help identify if people have restless leg syndrome, ADHD or even cardiac problems. The other, called Inviz, is for people with limited mobility, who can use the sensor to call 911 or turn on a TV.

University and state officials helped walk the professors through the process of obtaining grants, patenting the technology and creating a business. Banerjee said the university is increasingly stressing that its researchers focus on commercializing their discoveries.

‘UMBC also definitely wants to place itself as a university that is helping the community around it as well as the state,’ Banerjee said. ‘It’s one of our responsibilities to make sure we have societal impact, and commercializing is one way of doing it.’

Resteaze is a wearable system that can non-intrusively monitor sleep quality in a home setting. It is being developed in conjunction with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine with funding from the TEDCO Innovation Commercialization Program, which provides funding to support the commercialization of qualified university technologies. Inviz is a low-cost gesture recognition system that uses flexible textile-based capacitive sensors that can be embedded in fabric. It is being developed with funding from the National Science Foundation and a gift from Microsoft. Both projects are collaborative efforts between of faculty and students from UMBC’s computer science and computer engineering programs.

App permissions and application sandboxing are the fundamental security mechanisms that protects user data on mobile platforms. We have worked on permission analytics before and come to a conclusion that just studying an app’s requested access rights (permissions) isn’t enough to understand potential data breaches. Techniques like privilege escalation have been previously used to gain further access to user and her data on mobile platforms like Android. Static code analysis and dynamic code execution may be studied to gather further insight into an app’s behavior. However, there is a need to study such a behavior at the lowest level of code execution and that is system calls. The system call is the fundamental interface between an application and the Linux kernel. In our current project, we are studying system calls made by apps for gathering a better understanding of their behavior.
