Kiranmayi Mangalgiri wins 3-minute Thesis Competition at GRC
Congratulations to Ph.D. candidate Kiranmayi Mangalgiri for winning 1st place in the Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition at the Graduate Research Conference (GRC), which was held on Wednesday, March 23rd. The topic of her presentation was "Role of dissolved organic matter on UV transformation of antibiotics in agriculture-impacted wastewater". First prize is a trip to represent UMBC in the 3MT Competition at CSGS (Council of Southern Graduate Schools).

Become part of UMBC's event programming board
The Student Events Board (seb) is UMBC’s programming board - that means we are responsible for planning campus events, including live music, weekly movies, bus trips, arts, creative events, comedy shows, and much more. We are also tasked with Welcome Week, many parts of Homecoming, and UMBC’s Spring festival, Quadmania.
(seb) is comprised of a large group of diverse students that work together to plan events and cultivate the social culture at UMBC. Within this group, we have volunteer members that provide the creative energy and enthusiasm needed to make our events possible, event programmers that handle the logistical planning, running, and hosting of events from start to finish, and designers and marketers that create posters, manage event promotions, and think of alternative marketing ideas. (seb) is looking to welcome so new faces to our team and we would like to invite you, the UMBC campus community, to join the board.
(seb) executive board positions are compensated positions and each new hire will be required to make a minimum time commitment of 10 hours per week, in addition to extra hours for events and big weekends like Homecoming and Quadmania. In order to be eligible for this position, you must have and maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5, and you may not hold a position within Residential Life. The application process is further described below.
1) Completed applications must be submitted by April 1st, 2016 with resume attached. Late applications will not be accepted.
2) Applicants will be notified if they are moving forward to the group interview process within a week. Group interviews will take place Sunday April 10th from 11 am - 2 pm.
3) Individual interviews will be held by appointment on Saturday April 16th and Sunday April 17th.
4) Applicants will be notified by April 18, 2016 regarding final hiring decisions.

Holi, the Festival of Colors
How did you celebrate Holi?
Holi is a spring festival in India and Nepal, also known as the festival of colors or the festival of sharing love. It is also celebrated in Pakistan, Suriname, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, South Africa, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Mauritius, and Fiji. It is celebrated in the month of Phalgun on full moon day according to Hindu calendar.
This colorful festival also celebrates the eternal love of Radha and Krishna.It teaches humankind to transcend above the caste and creed. It is a festival to forget old grievances and meeting others with great warmth & high spirit. This festival begins with lightening of bonfire on Holi eve. Next day, people play Holi with different types of colors, abirs and gulals. They greet each other with "Shubh Holi" i.e. Happy Holi and send warm wishes of the festival.

DIGITAL HARBOR FOUNDATION HACKATHON - APRIL 22-24
Make the world more accessible for people with disabilities.
The Digital Harbor Foundation and
Betamore are teaming up to assemble the Abilities Hackathon! During the
weekend of April
22nd-24th, the Baltimore tech
community will come together to help solve problems that those with disabilities face in everyday life. This event truly is
about addressing the needs of those with
disabilities.
Participants will have an opportunity to
participate in the following four tracks:
- Transportation/Mobility
- Wearables
- Leisure/Entertainment
- Open Software/Hardware
Tickets are $20, which provides a T-Shirt as
well as meals throughout the weekend.

DIGITAL HARBOR FOUNDATION HACKATHON - APRIL 22-24
Make the world more accessible for people with disabilities.
The Digital Harbor Foundation and
Betamore are teaming up to assemble the Abilities Hackathon! During the
weekend of April
22nd-24th, the Baltimore tech
community will come together to help solve problems that those with disabilities face in everyday life. This event truly is
about addressing the needs of those with
disabilities.
Participants will have an opportunity to
participate in the following four tracks:
- Transportation/Mobility
- Wearables
- Leisure/Entertainment
- Open Software/Hardware
Tickets are $20, which provides a T-Shirt as
well as meals throughout the weekend.

1st Place:
$2,500
2nd Place: $2,000
3rd Place: $1,500
Four Tracks:
Transportation/Mobility: $1000

Open Source Hardware/Software: $500
for each.
For those that place, the individuals/teams will
have time to touch up their products and
present at a second showcase on May 25th. There will be a
$5,000 grand prize winner announced.

Jason Tselentis on the Art of Side Projects.
The Art of Side Projects
Whether you call it a side project, gig, or moonlighting, there's never been a better time to take on a second job.
But why do so many of us have side projects in
addition to, or as a replacement for, our
full-time work? Oftentimes, we can't explain why. It could be a passion project, service project, or
any old project, so long as you have a
vision and a means to make it happen. Jason Tselentis showcases a range of side projects and some methods
for taking them from idea to reality.
About Jason
As associate professor of design at Winthrop University in Rock Hill, South Carolina, Jason Tselentis teaches graphic design,
typography, web design, and brand identity. He
has four books to his credit, regularly
writes for HOW and PRINT magazines, and is a contributing editor at PRINT.
