The Summer 2016 Dissertation House is coming to UMBC (July 5, 2016 to July 8, 2016)!  Students who participate in this program will spend each day thinking, writing, and sharing ideas about their doctoral dissertations.  Students will learn effective time-management skills; learn how to set small manageable goals, and will meet with a dissertation coach in one-on-one consultations to discuss and address obstacles that might prevent them completing their degrees.

HOW TO APPLY

Graduate students who plan to participate should follow the application procedure below: 

PART I:

I. Submit a brief description (maximum 2 pages, font size 11-12 point 1 inch margins) that describes the project that you wish to accomplish during the Dissertation House period.  Applications will neither be reviewed nor accepted outside of the application enrollment period.

PART II:

II. Please use the following guidelines  for the application:

(1) Summary of the project, including research question(s), data or texts, and method

(2) Amount completed on the project to date

(3) Any obstacles that you are encountering that hinder completion of the dissertation.

(4) Include the following header information with the description:

• Name
• Address
• Telephone numbers (home, office, and fax)
• E-mail address
• Academic Program and Year in the program

Open application period: May 5, 2016 – May 19, 2016 

(Please note that there are only 12 to 15 slots for this event, consider applying early)

• The Dissertation House runs from 9 AM – 5PM, for four days, Tuesday, July 5th through Friday, July 8th.
• Students must plan to attend the full session, for each of the 4 days. 
• Daily schedule includes 2 mini-lectures, and 5 hours of writing per day.
• Breakfast, Lunch, and a snack will be served daily.
• The Dissertation House is free for UMBC’s graduate students.
• There are 15 to 18 spaces available for the Dissertation House.

Young Filmmakers Workshop in residence at St. Paul's School is seeking instructors for its 2016, three-week summer session.

Over-Policed, Yet Underserved: The People’s Findings Regarding Police Misconduct in West Baltimore

Dr. Charles Cange, visiting lecturer in Health Administration and Policy Program (HAPP), Department of Sociology & Anthropology at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), is a member and research consultant for W. Baltimore Community Commission on Police Misconduct.  Findings were released in a reported entitled Over-Policed, Yet Underserved: The People’s Findings Regarding Police Misconduct in West Baltimore  and were reported at press conference (http://www.noboundariescoalition.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/03/No-Boundaries-Layout-Web-1.pdf). 

Since then, the report has been covered by several international and national outlets: The New York Times, The Guardian (US and UK), The Independent (UK), The Huffington Post, and The Baltimore Sun.  UMBC Sociology Masters student, Nick Jacobsen, provided Dr. Cange with qualitative and quantitative analytic support during the research process.

The conference was also covered by various news channels, so there is a video clip of Sandtown residents sharing their stories as well as community leaders advocating for wide-ranging reforms on policing practices at the local, state and federal levels, including a return to community policing.

There are going to be over 12 different UMBC cultural orgs and programs uniting for a common cause, fantastic performances, and did we mention free Sri Lankan dinner! UMBC celebrated National Engineers Week by having a week full of a variety of activities and events. Events included a “Fungineering” research lab open house and included speakers from Northrop Grumman, the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab and a number of UMBC faculty such as Charles LaBerge, the director of computer engineering undergraduate program. Wrapping up the week was the exciting “Battle of the Engineers,” a competition where engineering students from different departments compete to win the trophy. Computer engineers won the trophy this year in first place, Chemical engineers came in second and mechanical engineers were third.
