Parking Lot Closed for Renovations to Make Less Spots in Lot

    <Tagline>Just what UMBC needs.</Tagline>

With all the construction going on around school, UMBC saw the perfect opportunity to begin another project to make the UMBC community better. The lot that you park in and is closest to all your classes is now being redone. The end result of this construction will be to create less parking spots in that particular lot. Parking has always been a bitter subject as UMBC is mostly a commuter school. Lots are always filled to the brim by 9:00AM which forces students to park in the dreaded Stadium Lot where they are inconvenienced by just a few minutes of walking in the whipping wind towards their classes. God forbid they get stuck at the line of cars turning onto Commons Drive. Student Peter Claven says, “I camp out in my spot from the moment I leave my last class until I have to leave for my next class. It’s not like I need to go home or anything. This baby has everything I need,” caressing his beat up station wagon. “Parking is easier when you don’t ever have to leave your spot.”

The pending construction will have devastating effects on the UMBC community. The biggest downfall during renovation is that there will be about 19*5-4*32+5428/40-2.7 less parking spots available for commuters. This might push students to double park, park on the grass, not show up to school, pull up right into their lecture halls and learn drive-in-movie style, or just drive off the top of Commons Garage. Another student, Ashley Simmons, can be found with her vehicle by the Library Pond: “I just park it wherever I feel. Sometimes I go to Harbor Courtyard. Sometimes I go straight into the RAC. The doors are always wide open. It’s like begging for a car to get parked in. Whatever.” Hrabowski could not be found for comment as he was trying to find a new parking spot because his was also closed for the renovations.

Meet the Donor: Kirsten Brinlee

As we send this year’s group of Alternative Spring Breakers off on their service learning trips, we thought we’d take the time to spotlight one of the wonderful people who donated to ASB. Kirsten Brinlee, program manager for the Baltimore Collegetown Network and friend of UMBC, tells us about how she decided to give, and why the cause is so close to her heart.

What is your relationship to UMBC, and how did you become involved with us?

When I first moved to Maryland in 2012, I was working for Johns Hopkins University in service-learning, and one of my job responsibilities was to serve on the Service-Learning and Civic Engagement conference. In 2013, UMBC served as the host institution. I would attend planning meetings and many of my first colleagues and friends were from the staff at UMBC. In 2014, I made the transition to my current role as Program Manager at Baltimore Collegetown Network, where I collaborate with 14 institutions, including UMBC.

Can you share a favorite memory from your time here?

Being a member of the 2013 Service-Learning and Civic Engagement conference is one of my top memories at UMBC. I remember being so impressed by the passion and values-focused keynote address given by Dr. Freeman Hrabowski.

What made you decide to give to Alternative Spring Break, specifically?

My first exposure to Alternative Spring Break was when I worked at the University of North Texas’ Center for Leadership and Service. I had never experienced ASBs at my undergraduate institution, but in my work at UNT, our office managed all of the ASBs for the university. I went on my first ASB to St. Louis and we worked with youth. It was one of my most memorable experiences from UNT. When I moved to Baltimore, I was attracted to my position at JHU because it included ASB management. What I loved about JHU’s program was that they were all locally focused. It helped me learn about my community and realize that meaningful service doesn’t have to take place far away from your own community, and in fact it’s more sustainable and impactful to work with your own community.

For this specific ask, one of my Collegetown LeaderShape students reached out to let me know she was participating in an ASB program at UMBC. Collegetown LeaderShape asks students to identify their passions, create a vision, and impact their communities. An ASB is a direct way for students to get involved in service and their community and I want to support those initiatives.

How do you hope your support will impact students?

I hope that my support demonstrates how I continue to live my own values around service and meaningfully engaging with the community.

Why do you think it’s important to give back?

It’s important to give back because it was other people’s generosity and kindness that created opportunities for me. I want to be able to pay forward the experiences I’ve been able to have for another generation.

          Hello,

I am a doctoral candidate at UMBC in the Psychology Dept. and wanted to contact you about a study that I am conducting that is a part of my dissertation. I'm looking to speak to parents of young children and any expectant parents. As your organization provides so many great services to mothers on campus, I thought I'd reach out to you to see if I could possibly come to speak to any mothers who attend your center.

What I am looking to do is show the parents or any expectant parents a 10-min video I created about safe sleep and tummy time recommendations for infants. I am trying to determine if the video is an effective educational tool and what the parents think about the video. I would have the parents complete a "test" before the video and then another one after the video to see if the video improves their knowledge about safe sleep and tummy time. I would need about 45 minutes with the moms.

I also have funding to provide all participants with a $10 gift card to Target and some light refreshments.

Please let me know if it would be possible to come speak to any mothers or expectant mothers, and if you have any questions. Thank you so much for your time. I look forward to hearing from you!

Intern of the Week: Gabrielle Salib for INDS

<Tagline>Learn more about Gabrielle's experience at the PAD!</Tagline>

Name: Gabrielle Salib

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: The Prototyping and Design Lab

Position Title:Undergraduate Research Assistant

Major(s)/Minor(s):Interdisciplinary Studies

Expected Graduation Year:May 2017

Briefly describe your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

In the PAD lab, we’re all about making people’s lives better or easier through the use of 3D printing and modeling. My research assistantship involves working with a team of graduate students from the lab, conducting a weekly 3D modeling and printing workshop for elementary school students. As an added challenge, the students we are working with are struggling in more than one area including behavior, academics, attendance, and/or social and emotional well-being.

We are currently doing observations of their perceptions of the 3D environment and their experiences interacting with the technology in collaborative ways, in order to assess potential purposes in improving the collaborative, elementary classroom experience

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

I obtained my research assistantship by first contacting Dr. Amy Hurst about being involved in the lab. She then invited me to attend the PAD lab’s weekly meeting to find a project that I would be most interested in working on and I got started with one of her graduate students Erin Buehler right away!

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

What I've enjoyed most about my position is the exposure to the inevitable intersection of technology and how it affects the people using it! I find it amazing that through research and proven methods we could improve that interaction to be more effective, yet just as natural as the interactions that we have always had through time.

I’ve enjoyed my work on research very much, but I’ve also really enjoyed the community that the lab has created. It’s a place where you can always find someone to talk about a problem with or to learn about opportunities to further your interests. The people in the PAD are the best.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

I believe I've made an impact with my team by interacting with the local community to encourage utilizing new technology to better the classroom experience and exploring the possibilities of customizing their own classroom materials.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

Advice I would give another student who is seeking a research experience is to keep a keen eye for opportunities and to allow his or herself to be in the position to be involved in activities that he or she is truly passionate in their academic and social lives.
