    <div>When hitherto separate areas of science intersect, research opportunities tend to pop up. So it is with the fields of Document Engineering and Cybersecurity. We present a summary of recent and ongoing work in our lab, including dealing with malicious PDF files, the construction of useful data sets, the use of tensor decomposition, and ongoing work in clustering, symbolic computation, and AI-generated code. We will point out certain themes in our work, as well as certain outstanding problems.</div>

    <a href="https://news.cs.umbc.edu/people/faculty/charles-nicholas/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Charles Nicholas</a> has been a faculty member at UMBC since 1988. He received the B.S. degree from the University of Michigan-Flint and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from The Ohio State University, all in computer science. He has served five times as General Chair of the Conference on Information and Knowledge Management, and twice as Chair of the ACM Symposium on Principles of Document Processing. He served as chair of the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering from 2003 to 2010. </div>

  <Title>Exciting Changes in the Division of Information Technology</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><p><span>There are exciting updates from the Division of Information Technology as we continue our commitment to ensuring the success of UMBC’s diverse community. </span></p>

    <br><span>Promotions </span>
    </h4>
    <h4><br></h4>
    <h4><span>1. Jason Paluck: Promoted to Acting Associate Vice President</span></h4>
    <p><span>We are excited to share that Jason Paluck has accepted the role of Acting Associate Vice President. Over the past five years, Jason has been instrumental in shaping DoIT's technological infrastructure and strategic direction through his comprehensive involvement in the strategic sourcing of major IT contracts and purchasing decisions, his work utilizing emerging technologies of AI and cloud computing, and his ability to apply his work in new and innovative ways. His experience as a CEO and CTO in the private sector has given him valuable insight that benefits both DoIT and UMBC. In his new role, he will continue to leverage these skills and oversee activities in our largest department in DoIT, EIS. As part of this work I’ve asked Jason to continue to follow the lead of Damian and be an active bridge to both the UMBC campus and the broader higher education community. </span></p>
    <h4><span><br></span></h4>
    <h4><span>2. Roy Prouty: Selected as the New Assistant Director of Research Computing</span></h4>
    <p><span>Roy has stellar experience working with High-Performance Computing (HPC) and research computing. In addition, Roy’s experience working for and with faculty members gives him a great understanding of the language of higher education and research. Roy is enthusiastic about collaborating with a diverse research community to optimize the use of computing resources. He has innovative ideas for expanding teaching and learning opportunities for faculty, graduate students, and support staff, and he demonstrates a visionary and strategic perspective on the future of research IT.</span></p>
    <h4><span><br></span></h4>
    <h4><span>3. Ally Hepp: Promoted to IT Project Manager</span></h4>
    <p><span>This role has expanded to lead the Division of Information Technology’s Project Management Office (PMO). In addition to managing cross-departmental projects, Ally manages institutional projects involving DoIT and other campus divisions, so her role includes a great deal of collaboration and work with other campus units and leadership. The PMO has grown in scope to the point that Ally supervises multiple Graduate Assistants and undergraduate student employees, and the PMO is expanding to include an additional full-time employee role. Ally provides direction and planning for the successful completion of projects within scope, timeline, and budget and works to streamline business processes with new projects in the Project Management Office.</span></p>
    <h4><span><br></span></h4>
    <h4><span>4. Chris Sutherin: Promoted to Manager of Application Architecture and Middleware</span></h4>
    <p><span>Chris has been fostering growth for team members and leading projects across multiple teams and stakeholders. He is responsible for leading a team, setting priorities, and driving critical IAM transformation initiatives. Additionally, this promotion involves a broader scope, including oversight of hybrid cloud strategies, which require managing the integration of on-premise and cloud infrastructures.</span></p>

    <h4><span>5. Jeremy Gude: Promoted to Manager of Application Architecture and Innovation</span></h4>
    <p><span>Jeremy has been elevating his work both in leadership and strategic responsibilities. Jeremy has expanded his work to include direct management of multiple teams, such as the PeopleSoft application infrastructure and data engineering teams, emphasizing day-to-day operations and successful project execution. Jeremy has taken on a more significant leadership role, guiding the design and implementation of cloud-based solutions, managing cross-team efforts, and aligning technical strategies with institutional goals. The scope of responsibility has broadened to include the cloud infrastructure work and the facilitation of data movement between systems, external vendors, and state agencies. </span></p>

This change highlights the important shift in the team’s scope moving forward.</span><span>The new name change emphasizes the differences between cybersecurity and the responsibilities of UMBC police. It also emphasizes the team's expanding role in establishing cybersecurity best practices and that the university fulfills its cybersecurity obligations. Furthermore, the </span><span>"Digital Trust" </span><span>component includes privacy practices, cybersecurity awareness, and training in the department's responsibilities.   <Title>Updates on Impact of Executive Orders and Federal Actions and Promotion and Tenure Reviews</Title>

    <div>Dear Colleagues,</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>We write today to share some updates related to the impact of executive orders and federal actions, as well as some modifications of protocols surrounding promotion and tenure reviews.</div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Since the start of the spring 2025 semester, faculty members across the university may have experienced disruption to their research, teaching, and service activities due to some of the recent White House Executive Orders and federal actions. Faculty research could be impacted in various ways: stop-work orders to federal grants; inability to access datasets or databases housed in or sponsored by federal agencies; or challenges in travel to present their work at national or international conferences supported by federal funds. </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Also, there may have been potential impacts on the faculty’s ability to hire students and staff to support their research using federal support. In other instances, faculty members’ community-engaged scholarship, teaching, and service may have been severely impacted due to programs being curtailed in both the public and private sectors and due to lack of resources to conduct the work. Faculty whose scholarship and teaching could be categorized as diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) may have to spend considerable time navigating the current political climate in the process of conducting and publishing their work.</div>

    <div><strong>Provost's modifications of tenure track faculty and librarian faculty promotion protocols: AY 2025 – 2026 Cycle</strong></div>
    <div>To address the potential impact of recent executive orders and federal actions related to research funding, curtailment or termination of DEIA initiatives, and related topics on faculty’s research, teaching, and service, the following protocol will be put in place beginning in academic year 2025 – 2026 faculty promotion and tenure (P&amp;T) reviews. These modifications will be communicated to each level of P&amp;T review through the provost’s annual P&amp;T instructions, through the deans’ instructions for the development of letters to external reviewers, through the provost’s charge to the University Faculty Review Committee, and in deliberations made by department promotion and tenure committees.</div>

    <div>1. If there have been any impacts on their research, teaching and/or service as a result of the executive orders and federal actions, candidates for P&amp;T review are encouraged to reflect on such impacts in their self-assessment.</div>

    <div>If the candidate mentions impacts in their self-evaluation: </div>

    <div>2. Every level of review, including outside reviewers, must consider the described impact of such executive orders and federal actions on the usual progression of our faculty towards promotion and tenure when evaluating both the work performed during this period of disruption and their potential as a scholar after promotion and/or tenure when performing on- and off-campus activities.</div>

    <div>3. Each level of review <strong>must include a Statement of Affirmation</strong> that their review, and all previous levels of review, has taken into full consideration the impact of executive orders and federal actions beginning in 2025 on the candidate’s progression. </div>

  <Title>Updates on Impact of Executive Orders and Federal Actions and Promotion and Tenure Reviews</Title>

    <div>Dear Colleagues,</div>
    
    <div>We write today to share some updates related to the impact of executive orders and federal actions, as well as some modifications of protocols surrounding promotion and tenure reviews.</div>
    
    <div>Since the start of the spring 2025 semester, faculty members across the university may have experienced disruption to their research, teaching, and service activities due to some of the recent White House Executive Orders and federal actions. Faculty research could be impacted in various ways: stop-work orders to federal grants; inability to access datasets or databases housed in or sponsored by federal agencies; or challenges in travel to present their work at national or international conferences supported by federal funds. </div>
    
    <div>Also, there may have been potential impacts on the faculty’s ability to hire students and staff to support their research using federal support. In other instances, faculty members’ community-engaged scholarship, teaching, and service may have been severely impacted due to programs being curtailed in both the public and private sectors and due to lack of resources to conduct the work. Faculty whose scholarship and teaching could be categorized as diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) may have to spend considerable time navigating the current political climate in the process of conducting and publishing their work.</div>
    <div> </div>
    <div><strong>Provost’s modifications of tenure track faculty and librarian faculty promotion protocols: AY 2025 – 2026 Cycle</strong></div>
