Please know your answers to these questions will be made public in the elections form where members will read each candidate's responses in order to get to know each candidate and cast a vote. Only candidates who win each position will be announced on May 10th.

Congratulations to Karena Ingram '16, music composition, on receiving a commission from the Virginia B. Toulmin Orchestral Commissions Program! Her work RAINN will be premiered by the Memphis Symphony Orchestra and music director Robert Moody on May 17 and 18, 2025. Additional performances in the 2025-2026 season will be announced by the Asheville Symphony, Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, and Orchestra Nova Northwest. The League of American Orchestras’ Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation Orchestral Commissions Program, a partnership with American Composers Orchestra, is comprised of a national commissioning initiative featuring multiple orchestra consortiums and a separate nationwide repeat performance initiative. In existence for more than a decade, the program seeks to increase the programming of works by women and nonbinary composers on orchestra stages.

Composer and sound artist Sam Pluta, visual artist Brea Souders, and video artist and writer Eryk Salvaggio each use and interact with AI in their artistic practice. They will introduce us to their work and reflect on their experiences, doubts, and breakthroughs, creating works using these technologies. This will be followed by a discussion moderated by UMBC Assistant Professor of Art Eric Millikin.

Although artificial intelligence emerged as an academic discipline in the mid-1950s, general use and public awareness of AI have materialized only in the past three years with the launch of generative AI chatbots and its role in the general applications that we use on a daily basis, through web search engines, virtual assistants, and recommendation systems. We are now at a critical juncture to consider the impacts of generative AI on creativity through ethical, cultural, and societal lenses.

The duties of the President shall include:
REQUIREMENT: Must have held a leadership position before.
● serving as the organization's official representative for communicating with SGA and UMBC staff
● scheduling and presiding all general body and Executive Board meetings
● overseeing all committees
● checking-in with other organization members

The duties of the Internal Vice-President (I-VP) shall include:
● ensuring membership cohesion through member feedback and group activities
● coordinating membership development through leadership development opportunities
● assisting the President in overseeing all committees
● assisting the President in checking-in with other organization members
● assuming the role of President in the event of the President's absence or incapacity

The duties of the External Vice-President (E-VP) shall include:
● managing public affairs and public relations
● serving as the liaison to other student organizations for collaborative events and projects
● assisting Executive Board members as needed

The duties of the Treasurer shall include:
● managing the organization's funds and ensuring compliance with all financial rules and guidelines
● managing fundraising events and projects
● providing budget summaries at meetings, as needed

The duties of the Secretary shall include:
● recording and archiving information from meetings and activities, including notes and images
● maintaining the digital folder of meeting minutes

The duties of the Social Media Manager shall include:
● maintaining and updating all social media accounts (Instagram and Facebook) and website
● regularly checking the HCC email and HCC Feedback Form

 

In order to appear on the ballot, please send Dr. Oakes (to honorscollege@umbc.edu) no more than a paragraph explaining why you are a good candidate for the office by 11:59pm, Wednesday, April 30th. On the subject line, please write: “HCC Elections: [Position you are running for].”

 

I will then gather all the candidates' information and open the voting on Thursday, May 1^st. You ARE allowed to run for more than one position, but you need to submit separate paragraphs.
