Agentic Vibe Coding from the Terminal

Large language models have become surprisingly capable coding partners - not just for autocomplete, but for turning a rough problem statement into runnable code, tests, and iterative improvements. In this talk I'll give a short, technical overview of why coding assistants work (internet-scale code + documentation pretraining, instruction tuning, and feedback loops), and where they predictably fail (ambiguous specs, hidden requirements, brittle dependencies, and "confidently wrong" outputs).

Most of the session is live, terminal-based demos using Claude Code. We'll start from plain-English requirements and iteratively produce working implementations: scaffolding a small project, generating tests, debugging failures, refactoring for clarity/performance, and adding documentation. Along the way I'll highlight practical workflows: "spec-first prompting", test-driven prompting, using the assistant to explain unfamiliar code, and using constraints to keep changes small and reviewable. The goal is for faculty and students to leave with repeatable patterns for using coding assistants effectively - without outsourcing understanding or sacrificing correctness.

Dr. Tim Oates is a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. He received B.S. degrees in Computer Science and Electrical Engineering from North Carolina State University in 1989, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1997 and 2000, respectively. Prior to coming to UMBC in the Fall of 2001, he spent a year as a postdoc researcher in the M.I.T. Artificial Intelligence Lab. In 2004 Dr. Oates won a prestigious NSF CAREER award. He is an author or co-author of more than 200 peer reviewed papers and is a member of ACM and AAAI.

Eligibility to run for a position includes the following requirements:
  • MUST BE a SWSA Member in good standing with the organization (have attended 3 events this academic year).
  • MUST PLAN to hold your position of interest for 1 full academic year.
Other additional eligibility requirements for specific positions are included on the interest form.

Open Positions & Responsibilities
President
  • Coordinating with other board members to ensure smooth running of the organization, including creating board meeting agendas and running the meetings
  • Serving as the organization's official representative for communicating with SGA and UMBC staff (including faculty advisor)
Vice President
  • Assuming the role of President in the event of the President's absence or incapacity
  • Assist all officers when/if needed

  • Organize and initiate elections for the following year

Treasurer
  • Managing the organization's funds and ensuring compliance with all financial rules and guidelines

  • Generally managing the finances of the club (submitting semesterly budgets, RESGAFs, keeping record of funds spent/available)

Secretary
  • Ensure membership statuses in myUMBC are correct by keeping accurate records of attendance at GBMs/service events
  • Recording and archiving information from meetings and activities
  • Manage edits to the constitution as needed
Public Relations Chair
  • Maintain myUMBC page, official GroupMe, and Instagram pages

  • Create graphics for events to share with board and members in a timely manner

On-Campus Service Chair
  • Coordinate regular (monthly) service events with on-campus service partnerships.
  • Manage required sign-ups, carpools, and waivers (if needed) for on-campus service events.
Off-Campus Service Chair
  • Coordinate regular (monthly) service events with off-campus service partnerships.
  • Manage required sign-ups, carpools, and waivers (if needed) for off-campus service events.
The interest form will close on April 8th.
The election will begin on April 15th, and end on April 22nd.
New officers will begin their terms on May 1.

Join us for our end of the year Celebration & Awards! 

Asian Cultural Celebration & Awards

Thursday, May 14, 2026

5:30 p.m. - 8 p.m. 

University Center Ballroom 3rd Floor

This celebration commemorates the achievements of graduating UMBC students while celebrating the vast cultural diversity of Asian communities and heritage on our campus. We recognize the difficulty of choosing just one identifier or term to capture the vast diversity of all people with heritage in the Asian continent, representing 49 countries and hundreds of cultures. We seek to honor the breadth of experience of people across Asia - East, South, Southwest, West, and Central Asia. 

During the gathering, we'll enjoy food together, we'll showcase keynote speakers, student musical and dance performances, and award presentations to honor student contributions, as well as the faculty and staff who've contributed to their success.

Light refreshments and appetizers will be served starting at 5:30 pm for all guests in attendance. 

Graduates must check in no later than 5:45 p.m. The program will begin promptly at 6 p.m. 

Dress code: We encourage all attendees and graduates to dress in their "celebration best." While cap and gown are not required, we would be thrilled to see attendees embracing cultural attires.

Global Asias Symposium & Celebration

This daylong event will showcase and celebrate the work of the Global Asias Initiative, a three-year initiative funded by the Mellon Foundation that has created a forum for engaging in conversations in the fields of Asian American Studies, Asian diaspora studies, and Asian Studies. The Initiative has has created connections across disciplines, institutions, organizations, and communities here on campus and beyond.

With our grant from Mellon Foundation coming to a close this year, we are showcasing the many achievements of the initiative. The day will feature a luncheon on heritage, belonging and identity in collaboration with Student Affairs, a visiting scholar keynote address on public humanities and Global Asias, and a student exhibition and reception in the library gallery & rotunda featuring community partners and programming.

The interest form for Meditation @ UMBC Executive Board Officer positions is OPEN!!
We would love to see this club continue, and we need all 3 open positions to be filled to do so! This interest form is open to anyone, although we encourage that you join at least one of our upcoming meditation sessions to learn how the club is run and speak with current E-Board officers. Our sessions take place every Monday at 12pm in The Center for Well-Being, Room 103.

The election will occur from April 15th until April 24th.
New officer terms will begin May 1st.

Eligibility for Running:
- MUST be willing to hold position for 1 full academic year
- There are no additional requirements to run for an E-Board position! Just be willing to build your leadership skills and maintain a safe space for members!

Open Positions & Responsibilities:
 President
  • Developing and managing events
  • Exploring and sharing the history of the organization
  • Serving as the organization's official representative for communicating with SGA and UMBC staff
Vice President
  • Assume the role of President in the event of the President's absence or incapacity
  • Assist in event management & communication with members through GroupMe and myUMBC
Treasurer
  • Manage fundraising 
  • Manage the organization's funds and ensuring compliance with all financial rules and guidelines
Semesterly Officer Responsibilities:
  • Attending Involvement Fest to promote the club
  • Communicating with the Club Advisor/Session Instructor, SGA, and/or SABSC (Student Affairs Business Services Center) as needed
  • Communicating with Gathering Space staff for recurrent room reservation
  • Setting up cushions for each meditation session

Dear UMBC Community,


It has come to our attention that a new wave of a popular scam has emerged. Scammers are impersonating faculty or someone with a high degree of trust among the community. In some cases, this may appear to come from a UMBC account.


The scam usually begins with a story of someone with a few high-value items going through a rough patch of life. The story claims that the person lost a loved one who owned high-value items or is relocating and has to empty their apartment of valuable items ASAP. They go on to "generously" offer those high-priced items for FREE!


These items can be an expensive digital camera, a pricey violin, a collector's guitar, or a cherished baby grand piano. But it wouldn't be a scam if there wasn't a catch. The scammers only ask you to cover the shipping costs for delivering the items to your location. They generally ask that you contact them outside of the UMBC.edu domain, either via email or phone. Once an external contact is established, scammers build rapport and ask for personal information, such as mailing addresses, to process a "shipping fee."


Once a payment is made to scammers, users are generally ghosted and calls/texts go unanswered. If you believe you have been a victim to such a scam, please contact law enforcement for assistance.
