Join Committee of 100 on Wednesday, March 25, 2026 from 2 p.m. - 3 p.m. ET / 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. PT for a conversation highlighting new findings from the second report in the "2025 State of Chinese Americans survey" four-part series, examining how the assumption of foreignness shapes experiences of belonging for Chinese Americans and broader Asian American communities.

The data reveals a troubling pattern: U.S.-born Asian Americans continue to be viewed as perpetual outsiders, facing race-based discrimination and questioning of their belonging at higher rates than any other racial group in the nation. Those who regularly encounter these assumptions face feelings of exclusion and psychological distress. The stereotype also dampens political engagement, reducing policymaker responsiveness to AAPI community needs. Our panelists will explore what these findings and what can be done:

- Teresa Hsu, PhD, Founder and Executive Director of SPEAK (Supportive Place for Empowering Asian Americans & Kins)

- Vivien Leung, PhD, Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Santa Clara

- Katie Soo, Trustee of the Asia Society Global Board of Trustees and Board Chair of Asia Society Southern California

Whether you are an advocate, policymaker, mental health professional, or community leader, this discussion will offer data-driven insights and practical perspectives to better support Asian American communities.

Click here to register for the event.

In this talk I'll give a short, technical overview of why coding assistants work (internet-scale code + documentation pretraining, instruction tuning, and feedback loops), and where they predictably fail (ambiguous specs, hidden requirements, brittle dependencies, and "confidently wrong" outputs).

Most of the session is live, terminal-based demos using Claude Code. We'll start from plain-English requirements and iteratively produce working implementations: scaffolding a small project, generating tests, debugging failures, refactoring for clarity/performance, and adding documentation. Along the way I'll highlight practical workflows: "spec-first prompting", test-driven prompting, using the assistant to explain unfamiliar code, and using constraints to keep changes small and reviewable. The goal is for faculty and students to leave with repeatable patterns for using coding assistants effectively - without outsourcing understanding or sacrificing correctness.

Sharing a message from Jackie and Freeman Hrabowski

Dear UMBC Community,

I am sure that many of you have heard the very sad news of the passing of Eric Coleman Hrabowski, the only son of UMBC’s long-serving, transformative leader, President Emeritus Freeman Hrabowski, and Jackie Hrabowski. I know that this caring community grieves for and with the family, as do I. We send them our love, strength, and support, today and always.

I write to you now to share a personal message of thanks from Jackie and Freeman, which follows below.

Sincerely,

President Valerie Sheares Ashby

To our beloved UMBC family,

Jackie and I are overwhelmed by the kindness, comforting words, and acts of compassion from so many of you. They are truly a source of strength and solace in this time of profound loss, and we thank you.

Many have asked how they can honor Eric. We can offer two ways for now: We invite you to share your words and photos on this tribute page. These memories will be lovingly compiled and shared at a celebration of life for Eric being planned for this summer. In lieu of flowers, if you are so inclined, we invite donations in Eric’s honor to the Center for Urban Families, an organization whose mission reflects the values that Eric embodied throughout his life.

As you know, this is an incredibly difficult time for our family, but we are lifted by the love and grace of each other, of God, and of our wondrous and supportive extended family at UMBC, throughout Baltimore, and beyond.

In gratitude,

Jackie and Freeman
