UMBC’s master of science degree program in Emergency Health Services (EHS) has been ranked a top 5 “Best Buy” among distance master’s degrees in healthcare fields by GetEducated.com.

Through emergency healthcare, the larger healthcare system reaches out to people experiencing unforeseen medical emergencies. Offering the nation’s first EHS master’s, the UMBC program was created to prepare EHS professionals for leadership roles in the field. Students range from healthcare providers, researchers and educators to policymakers and administrators. The program offers them experience with planning, research, development and organizational operations.

Students can select from tracks in (1) administration, planning and policy; (2) education, in cooperation with UMBC’s Instructional Systems Development program; and (3) preventative medicine and epidemiology. The first two tracks can be completed entirely online; on-site students can also take courses through public policy, sociology/anthropology and nursing, as well as the UMB Preventive Medicine Department. An Emergency Management graduate certificate is available as well.

UMBC’s EHS master’s program is also the nation’s largest. Students have an opportunity to share faculty, resources and projects – and even to intern – with the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems, University of Maryland School of Medicine's Department of Emergency Medicine, and its National Study Center for Trauma and EMS. Students also have close access to DC-based federal agencies such as the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Department of Homeland Security, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and Department of Health and Human Services.

As we’re just a bunch of ungroomed college students, we were most likely half asleep at 3AM when we filed our post (editor: yeah… work on that, please). But when we saw the follow video, it made us wake up and pay attention (quite a feat):

That’s professor Hans Rosling, who is kind of an awesome pioneer as far as graphic statistics go. As a scholar in global health, Dr. Rosling has been helping sleepy people like ourselves see important issues like health and wealth in new ways using statistics.

As students who are constantly looking at charts and tables in boring old books, we can appreciate this.

This clip is from an upcoming BBC production called “The Joy of Stats” which features how statistics are being used in fast, high-tech ways to solve both old and new problems. For instance, just in the four minutes in the video above, Rosling shows through statistics movements and revolutions through history and their affect on the world’s population.

What do you think? Are you finding the joy in stats yet, or will it take more cool videos? (See the Hans Rosling videos on YouTube for some of that.) Does the world look different to you…or are you falling asleep?

Voice Mail System Failure November 29, 2010

Earlier today, DoIT staff noticed errors on one of the two UMBC Voicemail systems supporting the campus phone service. The particular voicemail system is accessed by dialing x51121.

We placed a call with Siemens tech support and their technician arrived on-campus this afternoon. The technician determined that one of the hard drives in this system failed, and we worked with Siemens to install a replacement drive.

Unfortunately, all messages stored on the faulty hard drive can’t be recovered. These lost messages may impact one or more stored messages on individual phone numbers. Due to the age of our phone switch (almost 30 years old) there exists no method to provide a backup of voice messages for recovery purposes.

My Real Names

In college I spent a single summer day at a children’s camp affiliated with my university. As with everyone at the camp, I left my given name behind at the front entrance. For the duration of my brief stay, I assumed a new name: “Winter.”

The beauty of being Winter in that place was that I got to choose what being Winter meant. Unlike in everyday life, I felt no pressure to live up or down to other people’s expectations of me. I was neither confused nor constrained by the reflections of my past in others’ eyes. As Winter I felt free to be truly me. It was a lesson I brought back to the “real” world at the end of the day, along with the wooden name badge I have never thrown away.

I wish I could remember whether I chose the name Winter or it was given to me by the people who ran the camp. Either way, it suits me. Winter is dark and deep. It is the season of cold days and warm hearths, of contemplation and the renewal of acquaintances. It is a time to look back before leaping forward anew. And so Winter is one of my real names. Have you discovered yours?
