Tim is offering Buffalo constituents a new face in Albany; ready to change the way business is done and be the voice of communities that have been forgotten. Being distinct from his opposition, Tim is the only candidate in this district who supports marriage equality. Tim’s candidacy is a grassroots effort, powered by community volunteers. HRC members have played a key role in the campaign, organizing voter contact and coordinating volunteers. Recent recruits include members of the University at Buffalo’s College Democrats, who joined us last night eager to help reach voters. As a student at Buffalo State College, I am always excited to see other students getting involved in government. Working alongside other young activists is a great reminder that we can all make a difference by being informed and by getting involved.

All of the campaign’s work throughout the year is coming to fruition. The field office is bustling with Tim and his supporters, making thousands of phone calls and knocking on hundreds of doors. We are reminding the 58th district to vote tomorrow for a candidate that will follow through on their word to support equal rights for all of New York’s citizens.

Keep checking on HRC Back Story all evening long, and into tomorrow, as we bring you result from around the country on elections that matter to LGBT people, our families and our allies.

Today’s widespread interest in aging reflects millions of people’s deeply personal experiences with postponing retirement, supporting aging parents, caring for adult children with disabilities and utilizing technologies that promote healthy aging. UMBC’s innovative Erickson School is cultivating a new generation of professionals to respond to society’s growing need for supportive aging services. Through the Erickson School, as well as a strong, interdisciplinary gerontology program and Center for Aging Studies, UMBC offers faculty who can provide insight into aging issues from research-, practice- and policy-based perspectives.

Judah Ronch, professor and dean of the Erickson School, is a nationally-renowned expert on improving the treatment and mental wellbeing of elders. His writing has focused on the debilitating effects of dementia and he has pioneered major reforms in the long-term care industry to improve the mental health of older adults and the working conditions of their caregivers. His books include “Culture Change in Long-Term Care,” “Mental Wellness and Aging” and “Alzheimer’s Disease: A Practical Guide for Those who Help Others.”

Bill Thomas, Erickson School professor, is an international authority on geriatric medicine and eldercare, heavily involved in the movement to promote elderhood as an honorable and valuable position in US society. He is the founder of the Eden Alternative program and Green House initiative, which have promoted the de-institutionalization of nursing homes, replacing them with small, home-like environments that support a full and interactive life. Thomas has been profiled by the Wall Street Journal, US News & World Report, NPR and Baltimore Sun. He blogs at changingaging.org.

He is the PI or co-PI on several National Institute on Aging (NIA) studies. Morgan has received generous funding from the NIA for her work on the long-term care industry, care providers and the quality of supportive housing environments.
Hometown: Easton, MD

Q: How long have you been at UMBC?

A: 2 years.

Q: What is your current title (job or student organization position)?

A: Mosaic Center Cultural Peer, W.I.L.L. Co-leader, SGA Student Advocate.

Q: In 12 words or less, what role(s) do you play on campus?

A: Encourage students to understand and appreciate their importance in the UMBC community.

Q: What aspect of your UMBC role(s) do you enjoy most?

A: I get to meet a lot of awesome people and help fellow students find their niche and passions. This is especially important to me, because many other students have helped me define my own goals. It is really fun to learn about the experiences of other students and I find that I discover new interests with every conversation I have.

Q: What is the most important or memorable thing you learned in college/have learned at UMBC?

A: I’ve learned to engage in things that I do not expect to directly contribute to my future career plans. By signing up for a student organization or activity on a whim, I have found many new things that are very important to me and they have influenced my career plans. I’ve learned the importance of being involved with my community, advocating on the behalf of my peers, and participating in activism.

Q: Complete this sentence: "I am a big fan of __________"

A: Coffee. I like to think I have instantaneous and universal bonds with fellow coffee drinkers.

Q: Do you have any UMBC stories, little-known facts about UMBC, favorite spots on campus, or anything else you’d like to share?

A: The study rooms in the library are a great place to study with friends.

Don’t be afraid to change your major! I have gone from being pre-med/biology, psych, math, HAPP, art history…and many more…before I settled on Gender and Women’s studies. Hopefully, you’ll find your passion without as many steps, but do not settle if you are not absolutely happy.
