Storage System Performance Update
To all chip users,
The DoIT Research Computing & Data (RCD) Team is continuing to work on the storage system performance issues that have been impacting the chip cluster since early February. For some users this is intermittent or not noticeable, for others the issue is persistent. When present, these issues are manifesting as unusually long file read/write/load times for operations as simple as “ls” or “cd” when navigating the filesystem or as complicated as long slurm job runtimes. The RCD Team has been working with support vendors and other institutions to better understand the problem that is affecting the storage system. We apologize for this interruption to productivity and want users to understand that this is not expected behavior and that we are working to resolve the issues.
The team will give weekly updates and give substantive updates as they develop.

UMBC students/professionals and the landlord couple. We are looking for a
respectful, tidy individual who values a quiet, clean, and inclusive living
environment. Ideal candidates are UMBC or UMB Ph.D., graduate, or junior/senior
undergraduate students.

The Interlude's (previously Retriever's Gallery) semesterly student-led exhibition, "From The Madness" is opening April 16th from 5 to 7pm. Join us for a night of community, artwork, and cultural performances!
"From the Madness" is a group exhibition by UMBC students that reflects on our environments by celebrating culture, as both a refuge and resistance. Inspired by The Sugar Shack (1976), this exhibition considers how shared traditions, movement, sound, and ritual become sites of unity and survival amid chaos.
Culture is our breathwork. It lives in our bodies, our movement, our language, and the quiet rhythms of our everyday lives. It connects us to our histories and to one another. Be unapologetic, bold, vibrant in your art. We want you to showcase what makes you and your communities special.
"From the Madness" resists isolation and insists on wholeness. This exhibition is an act of gathering: a refusal of division, and an affirmation that culture itself is not only an escape from the madness, but a way through it.

Join Asian Studies for discussion with the author!
Join the Asian Studies Program in conversation with author of A Room in Bombay: A Memoir, Manil Suri, and English/MCS Alumnus, Aditya Desai. The event will be held on Thursday, April 16th, starting at 4:30PM in the Library Gallery!

About the Author:
Manil Suri is the author of the forthcoming memoir, A Room in Bombay, three internationally acclaimed novels, The Death of Vishnu, The Age of Shiva and The City of Devi, and a book on popular mathematics, The Big Bang of Numbers.
He has served as a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times and is a distinguished university professor of mathematics at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He is a passionate promoter of both mathematics and the humanities, and has motivated audiences worldwide to embrace both, rather than just one or the other.
Aditya Desai, who will be in discussion with Manil Suri during the event, is a writer, editor, teacher, and activist living in Baltimore, Maryland. He also works with several arts & racial justice organizations in Baltimore including the CityLit Project, Baltimore Youth Arts, and the Asian Pasifika Arts Collective.
This event has been organized by Asian Studies with support from the Global Asias Initiative.

Six years after the global pandemic, xenophobia and discrimination remain a persistent reality for Asian Americans, driven in part by the enduring "perpetual foreigner" stereotype.
Join Committee of 100 on Wednesday, March 25, 2026 from 2 p.m. - 3 p.m. ET / 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. PT for a conversation highlighting new findings from the second report in the "2025 State of Chinese Americans survey" four-part series, examining how the assumption of foreignness shapes experiences of belonging for Chinese Americans and broader Asian American communities.
The data reveals a troubling pattern: U.S.-born Asian Americans continue to be viewed as perpetual outsiders, facing race-based discrimination and questioning of their belonging at higher rates than any other racial group in the nation. Those who regularly encounter these assumptions face feelings of exclusion and psychological distress. The stereotype also dampens political engagement, reducing policymaker responsiveness to AAPI community needs. Our panelists will explore what these findings and what can be done:
