Whether you're navigating the early stages of your doctoral journey or guiding students through theirs, this workshop offers practical strategies, reflection, and tools to support equitable and effective mentoring.

Event and Conference Services (ECS) is excited to announce that UMBC has been named a 2025 Planner's Choice Award Winner in the Best Client Experience category. This award, facilitated by Unique Venues, recognizes top venues across the U.S. and celebrates excellence in providing outstanding client service. Kayla Cooper, assistant director for sales and marketing in ECS, will accept the award on behalf of UMBC at the Unique Venues annual conference this November. Congratulations to all of our DoSA staff who supported ECS in this achievement!

ECS staff are known for their dedicated advising, expertise in the field, campus partnerships, and excellence in providing resources for successful meetings, events, and conferences. They schedule and manage over 7,000 events annually for internal and external clients.

Unique Venues helps support unique spaces and non-traditional venues in growing their business with intentional partnerships that create genuine connections and lasting impressions.

Do you have a passion for maps, storytelling, and making an impact? The 2025 ArcGIS StoryMaps Competition is your chance to showcase your geospatial storytelling skills!

This year, Esri's ArcGIS StoryMaps and Living Atlas teams are cohosting the 2025 ArcGIS StoryMaps Competition to share best practices and innovation in storytelling, cartography, and data visualization—and to help you elevate the challenges that mean the most to you.  

Participants should choose their focus—People, Environment, or Infrastructure—and share a powerful story using maps, data, and your creativity. 

Who can participate:
College students, educators, librarians, researchers, communication professionals, cartographers and GIS professionals.

  • You must be at least 18 years old. 
  • You can submit one story or collection built with ArcGIS StoryMaps—either new or existing content. 
  • The story or collection must include ArcGIS Living Atlas content. 
  • You can build the story as an individual or group. 
This global competition is for you—newbies and experts alike.   

The competition is now open through December 12, 2025.

Join the writing accountability group to commit to your writing goals. The kickoff meeting is on 10/03/2025 from 11am - 12pm at ILSB 201 (virtual option also available). Light refreshments will be provided!

What are Writing Accountability Group, or WAGs at UMBC?

  • What: Writing Accountability Groups (WAGs) are voluntary and facilitated by fellow UMBC graduate students

  • Who: WAGs are comprised of a group of graduate students (usually 4-8 participants per group) interested in developing writing habits and accountability 

  • Why: Develop habits of writing every day for a short, manageable period of time by setting goals and being accountable to WAG peers 

  • When: WAG groups meet once a week for 60-90 minutes for 10-12 weeks. The group finds a weekly time mutually convenient to all group members.

  • Where: The group decides on a mutually convenient location to meet, whether in person or online via WebEx or other video conferencing platform

The Office for Academic & Pre-Professional Advising has openings available for Winter Orientation Advisors! Advisors meet with incoming undergraduate students VIRTUALLY during the month of January in one-on-one sessions to plan out and register for classes. No previous experience is required, and we will provide all training necessary!

Besides compensation, this is a rare chance for graduate students to gain professional and interpersonal experience. Depending on your field, your time as a student may not open you up to many client-facing interactions, and this is a pathway to gaining that experience. If you are considering a career in academia, meanwhile, advising experience is highly sought-after in faculty openings.

Advisors are eligible to be compensated at the rate of $100 per afternoon session and $50 per evening or morning session, with the opportunity to work several sessions during the month. Although there are only a few days during which help is needed in January, advisors in good standing may be invited back to participate in our much larger Summer program afterwards. Participants are also eligible to earn the Orientation Advisor microcredential! See more info here: https://badges.umbc.edu/

Grad students on F-1 visas ARE eligible for this work and invited to apply!

This session introduces the basics of generative AI and its implications for teaching and learning.  It focuses on AI literacy by examining what these tools are, what they can and cannot do, basic prompting, ethical & responsible use, and how they may impact classroom practice.  Faculty will see short demos of ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and have space for Q&A. 

Generative AI in Teaching II:  Applied Skills and Use Cases
Monday, Oct 13, 12:00-1:00 pm

Building on Generative AI in Teaching I, this interactive session highlights applied skills and practical use cases.  Faculty will practice effective prompting, explore discipline-specific scenarios, and consider assignment design strategies.  Examples will touch on advanced features (custom GPTs/GEMs, Canvas Mode, Deep Research Mode, agent mode) related to teaching.

What are Writing Accountability Group, or WAGs at UMBC?

  • What: Writing Accountability Groups (WAGs) are voluntary and facilitated by fellow UMBC graduate students

  • Who: WAGs are comprised of a group of graduate students (usually 4-8 participants per group) interested in developing writing habits and accountability 

  • Why: Develop habits of writing every day for a short, manageable period of time by setting goals and being accountable to WAG peers 

  • When: WAG groups meet once a week for 60-90 minutes for 10-12 weeks. The group finds a weekly time mutually convenient to all group members.

  • Where: The group decides on a mutually convenient location to meet, whether in person or online via WebEx or other video conferencing platform
