Welcome to the Department of Economics at UMBC. Economics is a powerful discipline that equips us with the tools to better understand the world around us. It helps us analyze how individuals, businesses, and governments make decisions, and how these choices shape markets, societies, and global outcomes. From questions of inflation, employment and growth to issues of inequality, globalization, and innovation, Economics provides a framework for tackling some of the most pressing challenges of our time.

At UMBC, our department is dedicated to both excellence in teaching and cutting-edge research. We offer an undergraduate BA degree in Economics, a BS in Financial Economics, and a Certificate in Accounting. At the graduate level, our Master’s in Economic Policy Analysis (ECPA) program prepares students with strong analytical training to meet the growing demand for policy-relevant expertise.

Our faculty are active scholars and dedicated teachers, engaged in fields ranging from labor economics, health economics, macroeconomics, and policy evaluation to sports economics, innovation, and international trade. We are committed to mentoring students, not only in the classroom, but also through research opportunities, advising, and career preparation. The department also hosts an active seminar series and conferences that bring together scholars from around the world, enriching our academic community.

Whether you are a prospective student exploring our programs, a current student seeking advising resources, or a visitor interested in our research and events, we invite you to learn more about what we do. Complete College America is seeking enthusiastic student volunteers for our 2025 Annual Convening taking place November 17-19, 2025, in Baltimore, MD. This premier higher education conference brings together leaders, practitioners, and students from across the country to advance college completion initiatives.

Ideal Candidates
We are particularly interested in students majoring in:
  • Business Administration
  • Communications
  • Digital Media
  • Hospitality
  • Marketing
  • Public Relations
  • Visual Arts/Graphic Design
We seek individuals with strong communication skills, a passion for higher education, and a detail-oriented, adaptable mindset.

What Students Will Gain

Skills Training in the Application of Interpersonal Regulation (STAIR) helps students who struggle with relationship dynamics and emotion regulation. High-stress experiences overwhelm the emotional system, creating both emotional chaos and numbing, undermining our ability to think and act effectively, and disturbing our sense of self and relationships. The skills training and practice introduced in this program are designed to help you leave behind old patterns and develop new interpersonal behaviors and emotion management skills more consistent with your current life goals. 

STAIR Group will run 3 times during Fall 2025, all rounds will be in-person.

Round 1: Wednesdays from 1 - 2:30 p.m. beginning September 17
Round 2: Tuesdays from 1:30 - 3 p.m. beginning October 7
Round 3: Fridays from 10 - 11:30 a.m. beginning October 24

The Center for Social Science Scholarship (CS3) is pleased to present this workshop series on generative AI, LLMs, and computational social science methods.  This series will begin with the basics of computing in R and how to use generative AI/LLMs in social science research workflows.  Each session will be focused on getting faculty and students comfortable with deploying AI and LLM models in their research, but with a deeper understanding of the ethical, equity, and environmental consequences of these models.  This series is being supported through the Elkins Professorship, will feature several speakers, and will continue into the spring semester.
