On the heels of the successful “AI, Privacy, and Ethics Symposium” of April 2024, we’re back with a new iteration! Please join us for this fall’s AI Symposium, titled “Exploring the Gadgets & Gizmos in Your AI Toolkit.” This fall’s series will highlight various topics ranging from Google Gemini and its integration into UMBC platforms, to the broader legal implications of using generative AI, and much more! This free symposium will be held virtually at noon via Webex on Wednesdays beginning October 1st through November 12th.

This nine-episode limited series from the UMB's Moving the Needle podcast features conversations with Maryland educators who started exactly where you might be now -- interested but uncertain about AI's place in higher education.

Each 30-minute episode features conversations with innovative educators who share:
  • Their personal journey from AI-curious to AI-confident
  • Detailed explanations of their classroom implementations
  • One thing you can try tomorrow in your own teaching

Whether you’re just beginning to explore generative AI or already building confidence, each episode meets you where you are. We’re all navigating how to learn and teach with this evolving technology, and our guests share practical, real-world examples to help you along the way. We’re interested in building friendships, creating community, and asking big questions. You know, the big stuff —like Who am I? What communities am I a part of? What is worth committing myself to, and why?

We make no claims about the “right” way to practice or not to practice Judaism. Our job is to help you explore the tradition in a safe space and find your own place, on your terms, in Judaism’s Great Conversation.


This semester, we will be offering "Life's Big Questions," where we will explore the big questions of life such as "Who am I?" "What communities am I a part of?" "Who am I responsible for and why?" "What is the difference between love, lust, and intimacy?" This cohort is particularly aimed at freshmen, transfers, and first time JLF participants, who will receive a $180 stipend—interested returning participants will receive a reduced stipend of $72 *

The fellowship meet weekly starting the third week of September.  Apply by September 1 to vote on a meeting time.

A note that this program is a reflection on identity from a Jewish lens and not an introduction to Judaism course--the curriculum is designed with Jewish young adults/those with some knowledge of Judaism as its target audience, but this program is open to full participation by all individuals regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, or any other protected category under applicable federal law, state law, and the University's nondiscrimination policy.  If you are looking for an introduction to Judaism class, please reach out and Hillel staff will connect you resources that fit your needs.

Retrievers, listen up — Six cyber scams you do not want to fall for.

Number one: Random Duo Push notifications.

If you didn’t log in, don’t hit accept. That’s literally letting an attacker walk into your account.

Number two: Free gift cards, pianos, and tools in your inbox.

Yeah, no. If they ask you to ‘send cash first,’ it’s a total scam. Also, your professors and the administration are not going to ask you to buy gift cards for them.

Number three: Job offers that sound like, ‘Work two hours a week, get $500.’

If it’s that easy, it’s fake. Real jobs are on Handshake.

Number four: Phishing forms.

UMBC will never ask for your password, Duo code, social security number, or birthday through Monday.com or Google Forms. If you see that, report it faster than you sprint to class after hitting snooze.

Number five: Copy this command.

If you get an error on a website that asks you to copy a command to the Run menu, PowerShell, or Terminal, don’t do it! This is an attacker trying to compromise and take control of your machine.

And number six: ‘Your UMBC account is about to be deactivated.’

Your account isn’t going anywhere. Don’t click the link.
