UMBC AIAA SUAS 2025 Competition Recap!

<Tagline>A recap on the SUAS International Competition</Tagline>

Over the past week, UMBC AIAA SUAS (UAS) participated in the annual SUAS international competition in California, MD. We headed to the competition with our workspace and the 8 feet wide aircraft, Gita XI 12. The evening of Tuesday was filled with ensuring our aircraft was ready for safety inspections, failsafes, and dropping mechanisms. We practiced setting up the airplane, creating waypoints and flight paths, and ensuring safety through a detailed safety checklist. On Wednesday, we passed safety inspection with no obstacles, in less than 10 minutes. Due to slowdowns at the competition flight line, we did not get to fly on Wednesday. On Thursday, our flight order # moved to 31, from an initial 43. We had to quickly assemble the airplane due to suddenly being called on deck for flight, and we certainly assembled it quick. At flight, we successfully prepared and performed safety checks on the airplane within our setup time. In mission time, we took off! Switching to autonomous mode, we hit all waypoints accurately without breaching the fence. After the lap, drop, and map flights, we successfully landed Gita. Due to overheating and telemetry issues, we decided to be safe and call off the flight.

Although the drops missed and mapping footage failed, and we only flew one lap, this was a success. This was the very first time that UMBC AIAA participated in SUAS in person with a flight! The judge awarded us all 50 of 50 points for operational excellence and nominated us for the Safety Award for being timely, communicative, and above all, choosing to prioritize safety over points. We additionally earned points for needing less operators, having easy to transport batteries, and moderate weight. This placed us in 19th place out of 81 registered teams for the Mission. We additionally earned 25th place for our Technical Design Report, and 13th place for our website.

Scores, on the other hand, were miniscule compared to the experience. In addition to the entire experience of designing, building, and flying, we experienced teamwork throughout the assembly and setup times, focus and resilience through the 110 F heat and sudden call up times, and the relationships formed. We interacted and talked with the University of Calgary (Canada), McGill (Canada), numerous Turkish teams, Military Technical College (Egypt), Nirma University (India), InnovateX (Bangladesh), Missouri University, AGH Solar Plane (Poland), Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), and more. We helped Team Pura (Turkey) with carbon fiber, Kartail Air (Turkey) with failsafes, and FKGAL Aviation (Turkey) with disassembly. We received tokens of appreciations from them and additionally from The Royal Air Force Academy (Thailand), Yeditepe University (Turkey), and more.

The 2025 SUAS competition was amazing. This would not have been possible without our sponsors: UMBC COEIT, UMBC Mechanical Engineering, UMBC SGA, ST-Engineering (Middle River Aircraft Systems), UMBC CSEE, SolidWorks, and Composite Envisions. We would also like to shoutout to some members:

- Ashwin for the ridiculously miticulous payload dropper construction

- Ben for coming to the BAR late night to work on the plane

- Connor for working on the computer vision for the future knowing that this would not be implemented on Gita

- Dan for so many drives for the FRR and setups despite not being a SUAS member (he is now, technically)

- Jonah for being up and early to ensure we don't lose our spot at competition

- Gabe for all the numerous rides needed for the FRR

- Kalel for making the motor mount when we were strained for time

- Kai for the drops and flight line operations

- Kamil and Neb for so many composites (wing, landing gear, shock absorber, sanding, and motor mounts) + staying up until 1 AM for wing vacuum bagging

- Mario for the landing gear, wings, fuselage, alignments, and so much more

- Murali for the website, thrust test stand, and Standard Testing Drone (STD) setup

- Nate for making the tail and helping with Jenga

- Nowrin for the cool AIAA shirts we got this year and fuselage repairs

- Pranav for the KML overlays that helped Profound with mapping and drops

- Shrikant (Profound) for all autonomy and repairing so many radio components

- Will for his insane solder skills and battery connections

There are many people who, despite not being members, stepped up to help. We thank:

- Nolan and Matthew for paving the way for SUAS

- Art for teaching us how to make a wooden tail

- Team Arrow from Nirma University (India) for helping us with GCS

- Lesa and Amy for so many logistical supports, funding resources, and space allocations

- Dr. Eggleton for his administrative help

- David Paton for connecting us with MRAS

In essence, this was the best year for SUAS. We have grown a lot, learned a lot, and had interactions with people we would not otherwise. Thank you, so so so much, to everyone who made UMBC AIAA SUAS possible!
_____________________________________________

SUAS_Competition_2025.mp4

Competition_Recap_Instagram_Reel

______________________________

talk: AI Models with Simulation Based Inference for Brain Tumor Classification

AI Models with Simulation Based Inference for Pre- and Post-Surgery Brain Tumor Classification

Prof. Vidya Manian, University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez

UMBC ITE 325b, 1-2pm Mon. However, the availability of these images is limited and we have to restore to data augmentation and image generation procedures. We are adopting score based and consistency diffusion models popular in computer vision for medical image generation. In this presentation, we will see these two methods applied to the generation of sparse jet images, focusing on high-fidelity synthesis for high energy physics applications. Using the JetNet dataset, the diffusion models are trained to learn the visual representation of jet kinematics. The results demonstrate that consistency models achieve significantly lower Fréchet inception distance measures compared to score-based models, indicating improved image quality and generation stability. Unlike methods based on latent distributions, this approach operates directly in image space. Furthermore, the efficacy of jet image generation is demonstrated using histograms of jet mass and other metrics to highlight the strengths of image-based jet generative modeling for training deep learning models. We also show how score based diffusion models can be used for calorimeter shower image generation that have particular symmetric structures similar to brain scan images.

VIdya Manian has a Ph.D. in Computing, Information Science, and Engineering from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez (UPRM), in 2004.
Updates on Sherman Hall Renovation Project

<Tagline>Accessible sidewalk routes will change for phase two</Tagline>

Dear UMBC Community,

We have reached an exciting time for the Sherman Hall Renovation Project, so I am writing to share updates about progress related to Phase 1 and information about upcoming logistical changes related to work on Phase 2. You may find this map helpful in better understanding the details below.

Phase 1 and 2 Moving Plans

The first phase of renovations—constituting the “A Wing” of the building, closest to the ITE Building, and the area connecting the two wings—is nearing completion. We hope to move occupants into the newly renovated spaces this September. Moves will begin this summer as we work toward vacating for Phase 2 “B Wing” by early October. We will be communicating with these groups directly to share further information about timelines.

Sidewalk Access

In anticipation of this, we have already begun working on the exterior of Phase 2. To perform the work replacing the facade on this side, it will be necessary to close the sidewalk between the Sherman and Sondheim buildings from October 2025 to January 2027. This is the sidewalk referred to as "Academic Row" or "196" (its average elevation above sea level). Blocking this pathway will keep pedestrians safe from the construction activities during Phase 2 renovations. The contractor will also be protecting the tall oak trees (considered "legacy trees" because of their longevity with our campus community). We will be asking pedestrians to go around the side of Sondheim closest to the RAC, and an accessible route will be set up through Sondheim starting in the fall. More details about routes will be provided closer to the beginning of the fall semester.

Over the summer while the campus population is low, the contractor will begin installing fencing and gates between Sherman and Sondheim that will eventually close this sidewalk. We expect this work to start in mid-July and be completed prior to the beginning of the fall semester. Temporary partial closures may be expected around the work areas to install the fence posts. Please use caution in the area during these sporadic events. Once the fencing and gates are installed, the gates will remain open, and access will continue for the duration of this summer.

In the fall, as faculty and staff are transferred into the newly renovated portions of Sherman Hall and out of Sherman's B Wing, access to Academic Row will be closed. At the same time, the contractor will also be removing the barricades and opening pedestrian paths on the Phase 1 side closest to ITE and the Engineering Building. The stairs behind the Administration Building that lead to ITE will remain closed during Phase 2 to keep pedestrians safely away from construction vehicles.

Supporting Progress

Thank you all for your patience and cooperation thus far. In particular, we would like to thank the occupants of Sherman Hall. You have supported the project and each other in many ways including sharing space and other resources. Your support has helped make the project successful thus far.

More information will be presented in August regarding the planned closure of Academic Row, including logistics plans for alternate routes for pedestrians and vehicles during construction. For the latest information, please go to the Facilities Management website. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me (jzahor@umbc.edu) or project manager Stacy Brian (sbrian@umbc.edu).

Sincerely,

John Zahor

Assistant Vice President for Facilities Management

Erle Ellis and an international team of researchers propose a new way to motivate international action toward a better future for the living world

Imagine a world where, instead of pointing out everything nations are doing wrong to the living world based on how they create, improve, and sustain a thriving environment, we measure what they are doing right. By focusing on the good, people worldwide might be empowered to learn from success, instead of feeling more powerless in the face of all the messages of environmental harm and damage. For nearly three years, Erle Ellis, professor of geography and environmental systems, has collaborated with a team of researchers across six continents, led by the United Nations Development Program’s Human Development Report Office (UNDP-HDRO) to make that vision a reality by developing the Nature Relationship Index (NRI).

The NRI will be the first standardized global metric that measures the quality of a nation’s relationships with nature, including plants and animals, land, rivers, oceans, mountains, forests, deserts, and grasslands. Progress will be measured in terms of each nation’s contributions to the living world, based on three dimensions: the management of landscapes to enable people and nature to connect and thrive together, the use of nature to sustain human development without harming, diminishing, or degrading it, and financial, legal, and institutional support for environmental protections.

Towards a balanced living world

Nature, the world’s leading multidisciplinary science journal, has published this groundbreaking framework by conservation, environment, and human development experts and practitioners. The NRI is now being developed with the aim of a public release as part of the 2026 Human Development Report, with the goal of updating the NRI for all countries of the world annually.

“By focusing on human agency—people’s ability to hold values and make commitments and choices beyond their own individual well-being,” writes Ellis, the lead author, “the human development approach treats people as agents of change, rather than passive recipients of policy interventions, foregrounding people’s values, aspirations and struggles to achieve a better future.”

UMBC’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences has named Ellis the 2025 – 2026 Lipitz Professor. The Roger C. Lipitz and the Lipitz Family Foundation endowed professorship that celebrates and sponsors cutting-edge research and teaching. This honor recognizes Ellis’s international leadership in research that supports the health of human-managed ecosystems at both local and global levels, aiming to guide sustainable and responsible stewardship. Ellis served as the 2021 – 2024 UMBC Presidential Research Professor for his contributions to ecology and geography, including landscape ecology and human-environmental interactions.
