    <div class="html-content"><div>Dear Colleagues,</div><div><br></div><div>UMBC's annual staff awards are an important way of recognizing the work being done every day by our dedicated exempt and nonexempt staff. Please take a moment to review the information regarding the awards and nominate someone who has been doing an exceptional job in that category. The deadline for 2026 staff award nominations is Tuesday, September 9, 2025.</div><div><ul><li><strong>University System of Maryland Board of Regents' Staff Awards:</strong> recognizing demonstrated excellence in one of five specific areas of work</li><li><strong>UMBC Presidential Distinguished Staff Awards:</strong> recognizing exceptional performance, leadership, and/or service</li><li><strong>Jakubik Family Endowment Staff Award for Exempt or Nonexempt Staff:</strong> recognizing contributions toward the success of UMBC students</li><li><strong>Karen L.     <Title>AUDITION for UMBC's Jazz Groups</Title>

          <div class="html-content"><div><div>So, do you like jazz? There are currently three jazz groups at UMBC, the Jazz Ensemble, and two small groups. The audition is the same for all groups. Non-traditional instruments are welcome. <strong>We are especially interested in saxophonists and bass players!</strong> Make music! Make friends! Receive course credit!</div><div><br></div><div>Also, we host our own jazz festival every spring. Recent guests include drummer and bandleader Jonathan Barber, saxophonist Charlie Young, latin jazz drummer Vince Cherico, drummer Allison Miller, bassist Ben Allison, trumpeter Steven Bernstein, bassist Ben Street, pianist Larry Willis, tubist/saxophonist Howard Johnson, and saxophonist George Garzone. In addition to hosting our own festival, our students perform regularly off campus and at other area festivals.</div><div><br></div><div><div><a href="https://music.umbc.edu/ensembles/jazz-ensemble/auditions/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Auditions</a> will take place on <strong>Monday, August 25, 2025</strong> from 2pm to 4pm in the Music Box (PAHB 151).   <Title>Undergraduate Data Science Scholars</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><span><h6><span><strong>Submission Deadline: Friday, September 5, 2025 </strong></span></h6><br><p><span>We are pleased to announce the Undergraduate Data Science Scholars (DSS) program for supporting students in </span><span>Fall 2025</span><span>. The DSS program welcomes undergraduate scholars from multiple disciplines, including non-STEM majors, who will examine all aspects of data and its impact on society. This year, scholars will have the opportunity to be </span><span>teaching fellows</span><span> or </span><span>research fellows</span><span>. Scholars will be able to work on research projects in Climate Science, Deepfake detection, and other data science-related projects. </span></p><p><span>Students selected through this effort will be part of the Data Science Scholars program, which will be run in partnership with</span><a href="https://socialscience.umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"></a><span>the </span><a href="https://cwit.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Center for Women in Technology</span></a><span> (CWIT), the I</span><a href="https://informationsystems.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>nformation Systems Department</span></a><span> (IS), and the </span><a href="https://socialscience.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Center for Social Science Scholarship</span></a><span> (CS3). </span></p><p><span><strong>Selected scholars will be assigned to respective affiliations (CWIT/IS or CS3) depending on the student's major, and the scholars' expectations per affiliation are as follows:</strong></span></p><p><span><u><strong>Center for Women in Technology (CWIT) Responsibilities:
    </strong></u><br></span></p><p><span><strong><em>Research Fellows
    </em></strong></span></p><ul><li><span>Scholars who will work as research fellows will work on a supervised research project and be mentored <span>by faculty.  </span></span>Scholars will be paid $20.00/hour for specific tasks, for 5 - 10 hours per week.</li><li><span>Scholars will attend at least two events in Fall 2025 and/or participate in research initiatives and professional development for their leadership growth and mentoring. Mentors will coordinate this at CWIT.</span></li><li><span>Scholars will need to register as CWIT Affiliates to participate in the 2 required events. </span></li></ul><ul><li><span>Scholars will be required to enroll in a<a href="https://careers.umbc.edu/students/find/internship/earn-academic-credit/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"> Zero-credit Practicum course on research experience (PRAC 98C) </a>through the UMBC Career Center. </span></li></ul><p><strong><em>Teaching Fellows</em></strong></p><p></p><ul><li><span>Scholars will work as teaching fellows and peer mentors for undergraduate students in IS 296 - Foundations of Data Science, and support students throughout the course. The scholars will devote time to mentoring and leadership development efforts for their advancement. The cohort of scholars will meet as a group under the supervision of the IS 296 instructor.  </span>Scholars will be paid $20.00/hour for specific tasks, for 5 - 10 hours per week during Fall 2025.</li></ul><ul><li><span>Scholars who will work as teaching fellows will be expected to be available to assist with classes and also present during lectures. Fall 2025 class schedule is as follows: Monday/Wednesdays 2:30 - 3:45 pm (Instructor: Dr. Karen Chen) and Wednesdays 4:30 - 7 pm (Instructor: Zehra Zaidi)</span></li></ul><ul><li><span>Scholars will be required to attend one mentoring meeting per month with the coordinator</span></li></ul><ul><li><span>Scholars will be required to enroll in a <a href="null" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Zero-credit Practicum course on research experience (PRAC 98C)</a> through the UMBC Career Center.</span></li></ul><p><u><strong>Center for Social Science Scholarship (CS3) Responsibilities:</strong></u></p><p><span><em>Research Fellows</em></span></p><ul><li><p><span>Scholars who will work as research fellows will work on a supervised research project and be mentored by faculty.     <Title>UMBC Receives $1M NSF Grant for its SFS Cybersecurity Program</Title>

          <div class="html-content"><p><span>NSF awarded UMBC a third grant to continue its </span><a href="https://sfs.opm.gov/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Scholarship for Service</span></a><em> </em><span>(SFS) cybersecurity scholarship program directed by CSEE professors </span><a href="https://cybersecurity.umbc.edu/alan-sherman/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Alan T. Sherman</span></a><span> (PI) and </span><a href="https://robertoyus.com/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Roberto Yus</span></a><span> (CoPI). The three-year award will support five new scholars majoring in a computing program at the undergraduate or graduate level. Scholars receive tuition, fees, and a stipend for professional expenses. In return, they must work for a government agency for a semester or summer in each year of support. Scholars must be US citizens or permanent residents. </span><span>Prospective scholars may apply by noon, September 12, 2025, via </span><a href="https://scholarships.umbc.edu/retriever/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Scholarship Retriever</span></a><span>.</span></p><p><span>CSEE faculty Sherman (PI) and </span><a href="https://rickf.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Richard Forno</span></a><span> (CoPI) have directed UMBC’s SFS program since 2012, bringing over 12 million dollars to support cybersecurity at UMBC, including funds for scholarships and research activities of Sherman’s </span><a href="https://cisa.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><span>Cyber Defense Lab</span></a><span> (CDL). </span><span>UMBC has graduated over 100 SFS scholars, placing UMBC fifth in the nation for the number of SFS graduates. UMBC SFS scholars engage in research and hands-on learning. Each January, they participate in a collaborative research project to analyze the security of some aspect of the UMBC network. In 2025, the scholars analyzed the security and privacy of a prototype of the new myUMBC search that integrates ChatGPT.</span></p><p><span>Reflecting the growing importance of AI and changing government funding priorities, the new undergraduate SFS scholars will be required to take four AI courses in addition to completing the cybersecurity track course requirements.</span></p><div><span><br></span></div></div>
