Are you ready to be the voice of your fellow graduate students?
This is your chance to make a real impact on the UMBC campus.
The Graduate Student Association (GSA) is now accepting nominations for four College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences (CNMS) Graduate Senator positions — an opportunity to represent over 2,500 graduate students and shape the future of student life at UMBC.
You can nominate yourself or another eligible graduate student. You or your nomination must be from the CNMS college.
Why Should You Run?
Gain standout leadership and professional experience
Influence real decisions that affect the graduate student body
Collaborate with a passionate and supportive GSA team
Receive a stipend of $1200 for your service
Eligibility Criteria:
Open exclusively to all CNMS graduate students (Master’s and Ph.D.)
Must be in good academic standing (GPA of 3.0 or higher)
Must be graduating in Spring 2026 or later
(Senate term ends June 30, 2026)
Senator Responsibilities:
Represent the concerns and opinions of CNMS graduate students
Report on Senate proceedings to your constituents
Attend all Senate Meetings
Location: In-person, second Wednesday of each month, 1:00–3:00 PM

Tori Jakpa Shares Research at National AHEAD in Denver
Overmedicalization, Social Media and Gen Z
This past week ADS's own Toritsegbogwa (Tori) Jakpa , SDS Assistive Technology & Accessibility Specialist, presented at the national Association for Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD) conference in Denver on her research, "Overmedicalization in the Age of Social Media: Gen Z's Struggle with Self-Diagnosis," which she conducted with her research partner from Purdue University, Monaami Pal.
Her poster presentation in summary: Research studies have shown that there is a close relationship between the pharmaceutical industry and the American Psychiatric Association, leading to a tendency amongst mental health professionals to interpret everyday emotional suffering to be a medical condition which needs treatment. This is also fueled by the social media culture and the rise of influencers in the health and well-being industry. Our goal is to investigate how self diagnosis affects Generation Z. This issue of overmedicalization and self diagnosis is amplified by socioeconomic factors such as limited access to mental health services, geographic disparities in availability of healthcare, stigma associated with seeking medical help, and insurance affordability. Finally, we will apply crip theory and mad studies as frameworks to develop more effective and inclusive strategies to aid Gen Z’s mental health needs in higher educational systems.
When Tori is on campus, she works with undergraduate and graduate students registered with Student Disability Services, creating solutions with accessible technology.

Reminder: New Webex site URL for Students
The site URL for students within Webex will change on 8/11
Effective 8/11/2025, all students will transition to a new site for Webex meetings: umbc-students.webex.com
The functionalities and features of this new site URL will remain consistent with umbc.webex.com, ensuring continued access to join and host meetings, as well as participate in Webex spaces messaging.
This modification is necessitated by recent changes to UMBC’s Webex agreement.
Some changes students may observe are as follows:
Steps to Take
Meetings scheduled before but occurring after the change may still work however, it is recommended that students take the following steps after the change has been implemented:
- Remove Webex conferencing from future meetings by deleting it from the Webex app or removing it from Google Calendar invites.
- Re-authenticate to Google Calendar by logging out, if applicable.
- Create a new meeting through the Webex app or by adding the Webex conferencing option to the existing Google Calendar invitation.

Making STEM courses more inclusive with lab and lecture hall upgrades
This summer, UMBC is teaming up with the Maryland Department of Disabilities to upgrade nine teaching labs in the Meyerhoff Chemistry Building—marking a major step in fostering inclusive STEM education. The goal: ensure all students, including wheelchair users and those with various disabilities, can fully participate in core chemistry and biochemistry courses.
What's Changing in the Labs?
Wheelchair-accessible sinks, fume hoods, lab benches, and cabinets
Lowered equipment stations for independent use
A research lab redesigned for accessible hands-on experience
Lecture Hall Upgrades Include:
Wheelchair-accessible seating in multiple locations with fold-down tablets
TV monitors for better visibility for low-vision students
Standing desks and seating variations for diverse body types, pregnant students, and orthopedic needs
Assisted listening tech and designated interpreter areas for students who are Deaf or hard of hearing
Additional accessibility projects include:
“The Office of Accessibility & Disability Services greatly values our longstanding partnership with Facilities Management to assist us in the mission of inclusive access and elimination of barriers for all UMBC community members,” says Tawny McManus, Assistant Vice President for Accessibility.

NOTE: We are now opening up relaunch dates to include August 25-29 and September 2nd-5th. Please fill out this form no later than Friday, August 15th EOD.
We are pleased to announce the official relaunch of our shared services center! To mark this occasion, we will be hosting an in-person event where participants will:
Attend a one-hour presentation on our updated services and structure
Meet the team supporting your department
Take part in a Q&A session, followed by an opportunity to meet the team in person!
To ensure this event works for as many attendees as possible, we would appreciate your input on:
