Videology is a converged advertising technology company. My daily activities involved working in a geographically distributed team, consisting of engineers in Minsk (Belarus), Baltimore, Reston, and Austin to build new features into their core advertising platform. My team had around 7-8 developers.</span></p><p><span><br></span></p><p><span><strong><em>Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.</em></strong></span></p><p><span>I first heard about Videology from a friend of a friend who had interned there last summer. I got excited after hearing about the people and culture and the work that was being done at Videology. I immediately looked up the recruiting HR person on LinkedIn and shot them a personalized email describing how I would make a good fit at the organization. They promptly agreed to schedule a telephonic screening but I insisted that I would prefer to come down in person to their offices and meet the team in person. I underwent around 4-5 rounds of interviews which were primarily technical. After a few days I got a call back that they would be extending an offer.</span></p><p><span><br></span></p><p><span><strong><em>What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?</em></strong></span></p><p><span>As an intern I enjoyed the flexibility that Videology afforded me to work on various different teams and projects during my internship. Everyone was very helpful and forthcoming in aiding me understand the nuances of the business and answer any and all of my questions. </span></p><p><span><br></span></p><p><span><strong><em>How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?</em></strong></span></p><p><span>I brought in a fresh perspective on how software development was being done in the Engineering division at Videology. After having worked in a handful of smaller teams in the past, I could offer a unique perspective around how we could move faster without compromising on quality or cutting corners. </span></p><p><span><br></span></p><p><span><strong><em>What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?</em></strong></span></p><p><span>My advice would be to utilize your alumni contacts when it comes to applying for any kind of job.     <div class="html-content"><span><a href="http://news.umbc.edu/college-students-from-across-the-u-s-gain-summer-research-experience-at-umbc/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><u>September 1, 2016</u></a> by </span><span><span><a href="http://news.umbc.edu/author/sarahhansen/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><u>Sarah Hansen</u></a><br><br>Each summer dozens of college students from around the nation travel to UMBC to take advantage of the university’s leading research facilities and faculty.  This year, 28 students studied climate change, diabetes, and other topics as part of UMBC’s <a href="http://hpcreu.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><u>Interdisciplinary Program in High Performance Computing</u></a>, a <a href="http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5517&amp;from=fund" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><u>Research Experience for Undergraduates</u></a> (REU) housed in the mathematics and statistics department. At the same time, 10 students tackled projects through the new <a href="http://chemistry.umbc.edu/research-experience-for-undergrads-program/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><u>Chemical Sensing and Imaging REU</u></a>, hosted by the chemistry and biochemistry department. Students learned new scientific skills, refined career goals, and practiced teamwork.<br><br><p><strong>Matthias Gobbert</strong>, professor of mathematics and director of the Interdisciplinary Program in High Performance Computing, explains that the program emerged from a collaboration between the <a href="http://circ.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><u>Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Consulting</u></a> (CIRC) and the <a href="http://hpcf.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><u>High Performance Computing Facility</u></a>. Gobbert and math department colleagues match each student team with a client from a local company who comes to the table with a problem they’d like the students to solve. It’s not about imagined scenarios, Gobbert says, “It’s real consulting.”</p><p>“It’s a good chance to get used to working with teams,” says Lois Miller, a rising senior at DePauw University. Abigail Kramer, a rising senior at Kent State University, agrees, adding, “It’s been great to talk to math majors from other schools.”</p><p>The interdisciplinary projects have exposed students to new options. “People don’t think about how math can overlap with other things,” says <strong>Danielle Sykes</strong> ‘19, mathematics and statistics and a <a href="http://news.umbc.edu/college-students-from-across-the-u-s-gain-summer-research-experience-at-umbc/meyerhoff.umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><u>Meyerhoff Scholar</u></a>, whose team applied a data analytics model to huge amounts of climate data from across the Missouri River Basin. “It’s definitely expanded my thinking about what my career options are,” she shares.</p><p>The National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, and National Security Agency all contributed funding for the program this year, enabling a larger student cohort to participate. Fifty percent of students come from institutions with limited research opportunities, so the program gives them rare first-hand experience and helps them decide if they’d like to pursue research further. A graduate student and faculty member are assigned to each undergraduate team, “so teams can be really well supported,” says Gobbert.</p><p>UMBC’s new chemistry REU “embraces the UMBC mission to provide research and education opportunities to students from all backgrounds, including students from underrepresented minorities in STEM,” says <strong>Zeev Rosenzweig</strong>, professor and chair of chemistry and biochemistry. Supporting these students is a team effort. “I greatly appreciate the dedication of our UMBC faculty and graduate student mentors to the participating students,” he says.</p><p><a href="http://news.umbc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/MathREU-cohort-2015-surf-e1472753863721.jpg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><img width="720" height="378" alt="MathREU cohort 2015 surf" src="http://news.umbc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/MathREU-cohort-2015-surf-e1472753863721-1024x538.jpg" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></a>The 10 students in the program had eye-opening experiences in their research projects. “I’ve gained an appreciation for the principal science behind a lot of the things we use,” says Kalen Sullivan, a pre-med student at Iona College who worked with <strong>Marcin Ptaszek</strong>, associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry. Sullivan didn’t meet his project’s goal to produce a specific novel compound in the lab, although he worked long and hard, but he’s found an even greater respect for people who work “in the trenches” of science.</p><p>Kathy Barron, a 2016 chemistry graduate from Virginia Tech, worked with <strong>Jennie Leach</strong>, associate professor of chemical, biochemical, and environmental engineering (CBEE), and <strong>Erin Lavik</strong>, professor of CBEE. “I thought it would be a good opportunity to learn about a field of research I was unfamiliar with,” she says. It went so well that Lavik asked her to stay on after the REU ended. She’ll continue doing research in the lab and is considering graduate study in the same field.</p><p>Becca Pontius, a rising senior chemistry major at Clemson University, has been inspired to pursue a new field after working to develop quantum dots in Rosenzweig’s lab.     <p> <span>William J. Seymour gathered with a small group of believers regularly to pray and fast at the turn of the 20th century, hungry to receive from God what they read in Acts 2. Even though they had not experienced Acts 2 at that point, they believed and sought after what was described there. After a month of fasting and prayer, William and several others experienced the Holy Spirit and received the gift of tongues. News of this spread and attracted people from everywhere. What subsequently happened over the next three years changed the course of church history.</span></p>
    <p>“The Western church has perhaps allowed itself to be lulled into thinking that prayer and action are at opposite ends of the scale of Christian activity. On the contrary. Those who want their actions to be effective for God’s kingdom should redouble their time and effort in prayer. Prayer brings together love and power: the relation of love that grows up between God and the person who prays, and the flowing of power from God to, and especially <em>through</em>, that person.</p>
    <p>“That is what Paul’s prayer here is all about. Essentially, it is a prayer that the young Christians may discover the heart of what it means to be a Christian. It means knowing God as the all-loving, all-powerful father; it means putting down roots into that love - or, changing the picture, having that love as the rock-solid foundation for every aspect of one’s life. It means having that love turn into a well-directed and effective energy in one’s personal life. And it means the deep and powerful knowing and loving into which the Christian is invited to enter; or - to put the same thing another way - the knowing and loving which should enter into the Christian.   <Title>The Success of the Left</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><p>Modes of Marxist transportation towards the end of history have failed but the arching ideology which binds them together has succeeded. The culture is explicitly Marxian or Leninist but the guiding economics is a perverse manifestation and mutilation of Smith.</p><p>The left today is the dominant center and guiding ideology which has guided, through its domination, the center into a reversal of what it traditionally once was. Yesterday's liberal party is tomorrow's right wing ret<span>reat. Religions and moralistic liberalism of the recent past has been morphed into a secularized materialism rife for, and prone to, subversion by its modern radical left vanguard.</span></p><div><p>The old Hegelians, the Frankfurtians, reject and rebuke composites of hard Marxism which offend the modern and moderate liberal. By distancing and disavowing its hard line ideological base and the fundamental metaphysics crucial to hard Marxism the old Hegelians of the Frankfurt school positioned, and continue to do so, themselves as the premier institution and in doing so succeeded in ideological victory in real politik while simultaneously defeating itself and its more radical true to self forms.</p><p>Modern Marxist 'utopia' has rebuked the classical gulags, harsh camps, validation through struggle, the stasi, and secret police, and whatever discomforts the people. Instead, we have social media, social ostracization, social gulags, validation through acceptance, secret academic and surveillance police, and cheap creature comforts as the honey pot of hedonism.</p><p>Our gulags are endless semantically meaningless social media feeds, click bait articles, and a prison of banal and fleeting nascency through perpetual progress. The belief in struggle is now a tautology with the desire for a flux of 'progress'. We cannot know what progress is because 'progress' changes so quickly any study of it is impossible and to do so would be to examine change as a static point in time which is conceptually and logically incoherent.</p><p>I examine the apple in the hopes I will come to a name and identity yet unknown to me as apple only to find the apple was never as such but now appears as an orange. But what is this orange? Who can know when it now is a tree?</p><p>We call this progress and the only thing we may say about it is that is must be pursued as a good.</p></div></div>

  <Title>College students from across the U.S. gain summer research experience at UMBC</Title>

    <div class="html-content"><img width="150" height="150" src="https://umbc.edu/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/NSF-REU-cohort-surf-2016-e1472755919550-150x150.jpg" alt="" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"><p>Each summer dozens of college students from around the nation travel to UMBC to take advantage of the university’s leading research facilities and faculty.  This year, 28 students studied climate change, diabetes, and other topics as part of UMBC’s <a href="http://hpcreu.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Interdisciplinary Program in High Performance Computing</a>, a <a href="http://www.nsf.gov/funding/pgm_summ.jsp?pims_id=5517&amp;from=fund" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Research Experience for Undergraduates</a> (REU) housed in the mathematics and statistics department. At the same time, 10 students tackled projects through the new <a href="http://chemistry.umbc.edu/research-experience-for-undergrads-program/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Chemical Sensing and Imaging REU</a>, hosted by the chemistry and biochemistry department. Students learned new scientific skills, refined career goals, and practiced teamwork.</p>
    <p><strong>Matthias Gobbert</strong>, professor of mathematics and director of the Interdisciplinary Program in High Performance Computing, explains that the program emerged from a collaboration between the <a href="http://circ.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Consulting</a> (CIRC) and the <a href="http://hpcf.umbc.edu/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">High Performance Computing Facility</a>. Gobbert and math department colleagues match each student team with a client from a local company who comes to the table with a problem they’d like the students to solve. It’s not about imagined scenarios, Gobbert says, “It’s real consulting.”</p>
    <p>“It’s a good chance to get used to working with teams,” says Lois Miller, a rising senior at DePauw University. Abigail Kramer, a rising senior at Kent State University, agrees, adding, “It’s been great to talk to math majors from other schools.”</p>
    <p>The interdisciplinary projects have exposed students to new options. “People don’t think about how math can overlap with other things,” says <strong>Danielle Sykes</strong> ‘19, mathematics and statistics and a <a href="meyerhoff.umbc.edu" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Meyerhoff Scholar</a>, whose team applied a data analytics model to huge amounts of climate data from across the Missouri River Basin. “It’s definitely expanded my thinking about what my career options are,” she shares.</p>
    <p>The National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, and National Security Agency all contributed funding for the program this year, enabling a larger student cohort to participate. Fifty percent of students come from institutions with limited research opportunities, so the program gives them rare first-hand experience and helps them decide if they’d like to pursue research further. A graduate student and faculty member are assigned to each undergraduate team, “so teams can be really well supported,” says Gobbert.</p>
    <p>UMBC’s new chemistry REU “embraces the UMBC mission to provide research and education opportunities to students from all backgrounds, including students from underrepresented minorities in STEM,” says <strong>Zeev Rosenzweig</strong>, professor and chair of chemistry and biochemistry. Supporting these students is a team effort. “I greatly appreciate the dedication of our UMBC faculty and graduate student mentors to the participating students,” he says.</p>
    <p><a href="/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/MathREU-cohort-2015-surf-e1472753863721.jpg" rel="nofollow external" class="bo"><img src="/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/MathREU-cohort-2015-surf-e1472753863721-1024x538.jpg" alt="MathREU cohort 2015 surf" width="720" height="378" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></a>The 10 students in the program had eye-opening experiences in their research projects. “I’ve gained an appreciation for the principal science behind a lot of the things we use,” says Kalen Sullivan, a pre-med student at Iona College who worked with <strong>Marcin Ptaszek</strong>, associate professor of chemistry and biochemistry. Sullivan didn’t meet his project’s goal to produce a specific novel compound in the lab, although he worked long and hard, but he’s found an even greater respect for people who work “in the trenches” of science.</p>
    <p>Kathy Barron, a 2016 chemistry graduate from Virginia Tech, worked with <strong>Jennie Leach</strong>, associate professor of chemical, biochemical, and environmental engineering (CBEE), and <strong>Erin Lavik</strong>, professor of CBEE. “I thought it would be a good opportunity to learn about a field of research I was unfamiliar with,” she says. It went so well that Lavik asked her to stay on after the REU ended. She’ll continue doing research in the lab and is considering graduate study in the same field.</p>
    <p>Becca Pontius, a rising senior chemistry major at Clemson University, has been inspired to pursue a new field after working to develop quantum dots in Rosenzweig’s lab. Slightly uncertain about her project at first because it contained a significant biology component, “Now I know I can stretch out to new things and still be successful,” she shares. “The REU program at UMBC was a big step towards my dream job of becoming a research professor.”</p>
    <p>All UMBC REU students presented their work at the 19<sup>th</sup> annual <a href="https://umbc.edu/summer-undergraduate-research-fest-spotlights-next-generation-of-scientists/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">Summer Undergraduate Research Fest</a> on August 10.</p>
    <p>Rosenzweig hopes the students take away more than research knowledge from UMBC.<strong> “</strong>It is my hope that the REU students will become ambassadors of UMBC in their academic institutions, and help us to promote and expand the UMBC culture of inclusive excellence.”</p>
