The BRAID research team has been working with our department to improve the undergraduate computing experience. Based on your enrollment in this course, you will be receiving an email inviting you to take a short survey about your experiences in computing. I strongly encourage you to participate in this survey, since your participation is vital to understanding the diverse experiences of computing students. The first 400 respondents to complete the survey across the BRAID campuses will receive a $15 Amazon gift card as compensation and all students who complete the survey will be entered in a drawing to win one of two $125 Amazon gift cards. Please watch for an email from Dr. Anupam Joshi and the BRAID research team with a link to complete the survey.

Day Three: That More Would Call on the Name of Jesus

Acts 2:21 – “And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Luke 15:6b-7 - “…‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.”

The good shepherd finds the lost sheep and brings it home. The next thing he does is scold and punish the sheep for its carelessness and rebelliousness. Right? After all, the sheep knew the shepherd’s voice and should have listened. It was its own fault that it got into such a mess.

That is what the sheep—what you and I—deserve. But that’s not how God treats us. In this parable from Jesus, he shows us what he and the Father are really like: “I tell you that in the same way, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.” It is so comforting to realize today that we are now part of the redeemed, that we know how much he delights in us. We are his beloved children whom he cares for in every way. But the picture he paints for us is that all of heaven breaks out in a joyful, spontaneous celebration that the lost, the one who was so close to death, has been found.

Who is the lost sheep in your life? A child? A brother or sister? A parent? A longtime friend? A neighbor? Who has God put on your heart? And what will you do about it? Ask God to show you how to reach out to that person in the exact place, that depth of heart, where they know the truth that they need a Savior? Don’t give up if you feel rebuffed. Be gentle and persistent. And be prepared to begin a most joyful celebration that reaches up to heaven!

Thank you, heavenly Father, for helping me to recognize my need for you. Grow in me your heart of love that reaches others with the truth of your love for them. Keep me sensitive to your leading when the time is right and hearts are ready.

CALEA is a national credentialing authority that reviews public safety services. UMBC joins several other University System of Maryland (USM) institutions that have become accredited by the organization.

“This exceptional acknowledgement reflects the quality and commitment of our police department and its leadership,” said Vice President of Administration and Finance Lynne Schaefer. “We have one of the finest departments in the System and the state, and this accreditation reaffirms that.”

During the three-year review, the accrediting body looked at the campus’s effectiveness and adherence to industry standards. The review team analyzed the department’s policies and procedures by reviewing its documentation and interviewing faculty, staff, and students from the campus.

“Being acknowledged by CALEA as an institution that upholds the highest standards of excellence is an incredible honor,” said Chief of Police Mark Sparks. “This exhaustive accreditation process presented a great opportunity for our department to review its processes and procedures, and it helped us to recognize ways in which we can continue to support the unique needs of our campus community.”

An important part of the accreditation process includes identifying ways in which the department plans to advance its mission to support members of the campus community. Implementing these approaches, of which there were nearly 200, is integral in maintaining compliance with CALEA. Some key areas identified include fair enforcement across all populations on campus, overall department diversity, and systems for reviewing and reporting on officer activity and behavior.

The CALEA accreditation team will visit the campus again in 2020 to review the department’s progress on its commitments.
