" width="625" height="469" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;">Photo by: Angela Graf | News Editor
Dr. Hoban lectures to a full hall of people in the IRC about climate change.
Some people roll their eyes at the thought of global warming, laughing it off as an innately liberal theory. What if, however, they heard it broken down into small, indisputable and objective facts?

On Thursday, Jan. 14, Ferris students had the opportunity to do exactly that, hosting Dr. Susan Hoban, a senior research scientist from the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). Hoban works with an organization called the Joint Center for Earth Systems Technology (JCET), which in turn works with NASA.

While her focus is primarily astronomy, Hoban came to Ferris to give a lecture on the changing climate and trends that have been appearing recently in the atmosphere and earth itself.

Despite this not being her primary field of study, Hoban was well informed on the topic and stressed the fact that, unlike many fields, climate and weather are things that affect every person every day.

To begin the talk, she eased the audience in, giving a brief background of the earth’s development and how it got to its present state.

Despite the initial uncertainty of some students, they quickly realized that the purpose of the presentation was not to scare or gain support for an agenda, rather it was to inform. Hoban even went as far as to discredit some of the things often heard in passing or from the media.

“If you hear people talking about one thing that’s affecting the climate,” said Hoban, “I would like you to be very skeptical about reports like that. The climate is an extraordinarily complex system and while one thing may have some impact on it, everything is interrelated.”

One student in attendance was Ferris chemistry sophomore Kelsey Diamond. Diamond happened to find herself in strong agreement with some of the points made by Hoban.

“I think it was interesting how she used the history of the earth to give context to what is currently going on in our climate,” said Diamond.

“Drawing on the fact that there is change and there always will be change, it’s just a question of how drastic and over what time period.”

Hoban presented a timeline that did exactly that, dating back hundreds of years, illustrating the fluctuations and patterns in things like temperature, carbon concentration and a number of other measurements, building a strong foundation for her main points.

Ferris graphic design sophomore Alysha West appreciated the manner in which the information was presented and explained.

“I thought it was very informative, especially being a non-science major,” said West. “I didn’t think it was too far over my head; she was very good at being thorough in her explanations and making sure everyone was able to understand.”

Hoban urged the audience to stay informed and pay attention to developments in the world of earth climate, cognizant of the fact that, despite interference and even opposing efforts, there are just some things that will forever continue to change.

“We’re humans and we’re smart and we’ll adapt, at least over the short term,” said Hoban. “Unless the pace of change gets out of hand.”

http://fsutorch.com/2016/01/20/change-is-the-only-constant/

Formal NFL Player Has Grip on Golf Solutions

Formal NFL Player Has Grip on Golf Solutions

You might not think of an NFL player as being the typical developer of golf products. But that’s the case with Matt Furstenburg, a former NFL tight end who has partnered with two chemical engineers to create an item that helps restore and enhance grips on golf clubs in all conditions. Grip Boost Golf Spray restores the grip on worn-down gloves and clubs. It can be applied directly to the glove, club grip, or both with a few sprays and lasts about nine holes before a reapplication is necessary. Water and sweat resistant, it provides about 60 sprays per bottle. “Golfers were complaining about sweaty grips and difficulty swinging in the rain,” said Furstenburg, who now lives on a golf course. “We wanted to have something that worked through both rain and sweat, and allowed you to have a solid grip in those conditions.” As an ode to his Maryland roots, the spray uses an eco-friendly ingredient derived from crab shells. Crab polymers have been used in the past for bandages, but the ingredient has yet to be used in a sports product on the market. Co-founders and chemical engineers Chandra Arya and Kevin Diehn worked with crab-shell materials at the University of Maryland’s Department of Chemical and Bimolecular Engineering, where they also met Furstenburg in 2012 at his alma mater. After a year with the Baltimore Ravens and two years of research, Furstenburg and his team launched Grip Boost Inc. in 2014. The company debuted a gel product that restored the grip to football gloves, an issue that Furstenburg, who also played for the University of Maryland, struggled with throughout his football career. After the launch of the football-glove product, the team developed a product for baseball, softball and have now moved into the golf world. Currently a Kickstarter project, the campaign has raised just over $3,000. The spray isn’t available on retail but you can try it out for a $10 pledge.
New York artist MITSKI performs at the Rock N Roll Hotel with supporting acts from JAY SOM and JAPANESE BREAKFAST. Following up her 2014 album “Meet Me at Makeout Creek”, her latest album “Puberty 2” delves further into her emotions. Singing about complicated relationships that still have not been resolved, there is a sense of melancholy in each song she performs. The crowd was in tune to every track, with little commentary in between songs. Interestingly, Mitski played a cover of the Calvin Harris track “How Deep Is Your Love” with grand excitement from the audience. Recently, Mitski’s song “Francis Forever” was briefly featured on the animated television show Adventure Time. The sounds of Mitski are rough around the edges at times but ultimately rewarding if you can sympathize with that.
