<Tagline>A Dorm I, II, and III Reunion Mug from 2006</Tagline>

Special Collections continues our archival project Archives Gold: 50 Objects for UMBC's 50th, a special series showcasing 50 different objects that tell the story of UMBC. This week we present a Dorm I, II, and III reunion mug from 2006.

Dorm I, II, III Reunion Mug, 2006. University Archives, Special Collections, University of Maryland, Baltimore County (Baltimore, MD)

The first dorms on the UMBC campus opened in March of 1970. Each dorm initially housed 150 students and were co-ed, with women on the top two floors and men on the bottom floor. These early dorms were given numbers as their names- Dorm I, Dorm II, and Dorm III- until 1979 when the university, after popular support of the students, decided to change their names. Similar in style to the dorms of University of Maryland, College Park which were named after Maryland counties and cities, the UMBC dorms were renamed after Maryland bodies of water (Susquehanna, Chesapeake, Patapsco, and Potomac Hall).

Learn More:

-History of UMBC Research Guide

-University Archives Webpage

-Article in The Retriever (Volume 4, Number 12) entitled "Dorms to Open March 1"

-UMBC Magazine: Histories and Mysteries: Dorms

View All: http://my.umbc.edu/groups/library/posts?tag=archives-gold

          Project Description
What is the syllabi archive initiative?

An initiative that will provide faculty with a mechanism to post syllabi for each course/each semester that would be archived into a central repository. The syllabi archive would be made accessible to individuals with a UMBC login. While it is not possible to establish a formal policy requiring all faculty to post syllabi at the end of each semester (intellectual property rights issues), it has been deemed important to pursue a mechanism to make the option available.

Some background: In Spring 2013, the SGA reached out to the ASEC and the ASAC to request consideration of a policy (require faculty to post syllabi) much like the one recently passed at the University of Maryland, College Park. Following various conversations, ASEC and ASAC agreed to support SGA in the initiative with the understanding that this will only be pursued as a technical option - not a formal policy.

Double Standard Poster Child Bemoans Double Standards

<Tagline>Hope Solo isn't a fan of double standards against her..</Tagline>

Hope Solo, the woman who was charged with domestic violence against her sister, nephew, and husband, (and then two months later named captain of the U.S. soccer team) is claiming that her recent suspension, which amounts to a loss of two friendlies, is the result of a double standard. In the same Olympics where a male Egyptian Judo participant was sent out of the country for refusing to shake his opponents hand, Solo is claiming that had her comments, (in which she referred to her opponents as "cowards") come from a man, than they would not have provoked a suspension. The queen of double standards, who is still facing legal challenges due to her arrest for domestic violence (and violently resisting that arrest), has now decided that double standards are a bad thing.

New Active Learning Spaces Created for Teaching & Training

<Tagline>Engage & explore teaching & technology in new ENGR rooms</Tagline>

Over the summer, Engineering rooms 023, 025 and 102 were all renovated with brand new furniture and new technology to further enhance faculty & staff training, in addition to classroom learning. Room 102 will be exclusive for faculty & staff use, while room 023 will be used as an Active Learning Classroom and room 025 will remain as a Flex Lab for training.

Active Learning Classroom (ENGR 023) & Flex Lab (ENGR 025)

ENGR rooms 023 and 025 were also renovated over the summer and include new furniture. Room 023 will serve as an Active Learning classroom. An instructor in this room can experiment with different configurations similar to ENGR 102. The room is also a smart classroom, equipped with a touch-enabled interactive projector and features classroom audio enhancement, with wireless microphones throughout the room. There is a new wireless collaboration device that allows any device, whether it be iOS, Android, Windows, or Mac to share content wirelessly onto the projector.

On the left is a before shot of ENGR 023 before it was renovated. On the right is the after shot, featuring mobile whiteboards and new furniture that can be moved around.

ENGR 025 will continue to function as a training lab but no longer features desktop workstations. Instead, individuals will have to bring their own devices or check out Chromebooks for training. Multiple devices are supported in all of the spaces, so we encourage our faculty, staff, and students to bring laptops, tablets, or other portables. Since all the furniture can be moved around, these spaces provide more flexibility to promote active learning.

Another shot of 023 and all the new furniture it has.

Faculty Sandbox (ENGR 102)

In September, the Faculty Sandbox will provide UMBC faculty and staff access to a flexible environment to test-drive innovative technologies, explore strategies to promote active learning, and engage in conversations about teaching & student success.

On the left, a small group discussion layout.
