  <Title>Call for Applications - 2017 - 2019 Postdoctoral Fellowship</Title>

    <p><strong>Program Description</strong></p>
    <p>The University of Maryland Baltimore County invites applications for the UMBC Postdoctoral Fellows Program for Faculty Diversity. UMBC is dedicated to ensuring a diverse, scholarly environment and encouraging outstanding individuals to enter the academic profession.  The purpose of the Program is to support promising scholars who are committed to diversity in the academy and to prepare those scholars for possible tenure track appointments at UMBC. We are particularly interested in receiving applications from individuals who are members of groups that historically have been underrepresented in the professoriate.</p>
    <p><strong> <img src="https://promiseagep.files.wordpress.com/2016/06/umbc.png?w=630" alt="umbc" style="max-width: 100%; height: auto;"></strong></p>
    <p>UMBC will appoint recent recipients of the Ph.D. as Postdoctoral Fellows for a two-year term beginning July 1, 2017.  The fellow will receive a starting stipend of $40,000, health benefits, $3,000 for conference travel and preparation of scholarly work, office space with computer, library and other privileges at the university.  During the two-year term of appointment, the fellow will teach one course a year in the host department.  All fellows are expected to be in residence during the academic year and participate in departmental seminars and related activities.  Each fellow will be provided teaching and research mentors and specialized professional development opportunities across the campus. The remainder of the fellow’s time will be devoted to pursuing research.</p>
    <p> </p>
    <p>Successful candidates for the Program will be selected on the basis of scholarly promise and potential to add to the diversity of the UMBC community.  Applicants must have completed their doctoral degree when the term of appointment commences and must be no more than three years beyond receiving the Ph.D.  Individuals awarded a Ph.D. from UMBC or currently holding a postdoctoral or faculty position at UMBC are not eligible.</p>
    <p><strong>Fields</strong></p>
    <p>Applications for study in any field represented at UMBC are welcome. Please specify up to three fields of interest. Applicants with interdisciplinary research interests will be assigned to more than one department/program.</p>
    <p><strong>Stipend</strong></p>
    <p>$48,000 a year.</p>
    <p><strong>Eligibility</strong></p>
    <p>Applicants who will have completed the doctoral degree no later than July 1, 2017 and no earlier than July 1, 2014 are eligible to apply. Preference will be given to U.S. citizens and permanent residents.</p>

    <li>Curriculum Vitae</li>
    <li>Three Letters of Reference</li>
    <li>Statement of Proposed Research Plan during fellowship (2-3 Pages)</li>
    <li>Personal Statement that details your demonstrated commitment to diversity and why you should be selected for this fellowship (1-3 Pages)</li>
    <li>Writing Sample (1-2 samples, 35 page max, e.g., dissertation chapter, journal article)</li>
    <li>List of up to three fields of interest that are represented at UMBC (1 Page)</li>

    <p><strong>Review and Selection</strong></p>
    <p>Applications will be reviewed by the appropriate department(s)/program(s), Dean(s) and the Provost’s Selection Committee. Semi-finalists will be announced in mid-January and finalists will be invited to campus for interviews in mid-February. Awardees will be notified in early March.</p>

    <p><em><span>Our speakers’ work on the topic of graduate funding was presented at the “Understanding Interventions” national conference in 2012, and was published in a paper by the American Association of Engineering Education in 2013. This year, in addition to their annual workshops in Boston, their seminar, “The $10 Million Dollar Plan: Increasing Graduate Funding and Diversity in Computing” was presented at the 2014 Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing, in Seattle, WA. </span></em><strong><span>Their list of winners continues to grow, and participants who have taken their workshops have won the prestigious NSF GRFP Fellowship and other awards,  totaling more than $1 million of fellowship money! </span></strong></p>

    <p>This seminar will include general information about funding for graduate school. Information regarding a variety of fellowships will be shared. Most of the content will focus on funding that is available in the U.S. for students in STEM fields.  Many of these fellowship opportunities are sponsored by the U.S. government, and are therefore reserved for U.S. students. This session is for those who are making the commitment to submit the <a href="http://www.nsfgrfp.org/" rel="nofollow external" class="bo">NSF Graduate Research Fellowship</a> application. Participation in this session requires participation in SESSION 1. This session will take you through the process of logging onto the Fastlane, NSF’s online application submission website, and the presenters will assist you with the early stages of preparing your essays and documents for the fellowship application.</span></p>

Carter-Johnson, Education Data Scientist, National Science Foundation, Division of Human Resource Development (HRD), and Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR)</p>
    </div>
    <p>Dr. Carter-Johnson is a graduate of UMBC’s Department of Public Policy and formerly served as a STEM Policy Analyst at Westat.  Dr. Carter-Johnson has degrees in Public Policy, Applied Physics, Pure Physics, and Mechanical Engineering from UMBC, Georgia Tech, and Spelman College. She has received research support and fellowships from NASA, NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP), SREB, The Department of Education, GEM, the American Evaluation Association, NIH, and MIT. Dr. Carter-Johnson completed her postdoctoral training at the Teaching and Learning Laboratory at MIT, and was a Science and Technology Policy Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). She currently is an Education Data Scientist at the National Science Foundation in the Division of Human Resource Development (HRD) and is the Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR).</p>

    <p><span>Dr. Ordóñez  is a graduate of UMBC’s Department of Computer Science. She is an Assistant Professor at the University of Puerto Rico Rio Piedras. Dr. Ordóñez has degrees from Johns Hopkins University and UMBC in Hispanic and Italian Studies, and Computer Science respectively.  She has taught several classes at UMBC and was a Technical Trainer for UMBC’s Training Centers, focusing on JAVA Computer Programming Certifications and curriculum development. Dr. Ordóñez  was an NSF Graduate Research Fellow, and has received fellowships and/or recognition from Xerox, Verizon, Google, The Ford Foundation, The Hispanic Scholarship Fund and UMBC. Dr. Ordóñez is the Leader of Biomedical Informatics Function for the Puerto Rico Clinical and Translational Research Consortium, and her research is   focused on applying machine learning, data mining, and data visualization to big time series data for the purpose of improving medicine and on developing assistive technologies for programming. Dr. Ordóñez also presents this workshop on graduate research funding in Puerto Rico in Spanish.</span></p>

  <Title>DoIT Lends a Helping Hand With Community Service</Title>

    <div>Earlier this summer, members from the Instructional Technology team devoted their time with community outreach at the Therapeutic &amp; Recreational Riding Center (TRRC). The center provides physical and occupational therapy services to children and adults with a wide range of physical, mental, and emotional disabilities. </div>

    <div>Led by Dr. Sherri Braxton-Lieber, Director for Instructional Technology, the team was tasked with landscaping, which included pulling weeds and freeing up some hidden rose bushes. Braxton-Lieber also works at the TRRC and has supported it for over 10 years.</div>

    <div>“The center provides great services and reaches many families, but has no budget for most of the ground maintenance and landscaping activities.” said Braxton-Lieber. </div>

    <div>Brad Boyle, Instructional Technology Specialist, was just one of the several team members helping out. He described the experience as fun, and that it was a nice way to bond with coworkers. “I have done work like this before, and it is nice to be able to help out a place that serves others.” said Boyle.</div>

    <h4><strong><em>“To have any type of positive impact is the most important part of it for me.”</em></strong></h4>

    <div>Community service such as this helps the center out greatly. Rather than having regular volunteers focus on the landscaping, it frees them up to serve the people who come to the TRRC to the best of their abilities. </div>

    <div>“I see serving others in any way as an important part of my life,” said Boyle. “To have any type of positive impact is the most important part of it for me.”</div>

    <div>This type of community outreach creates a much different experience than most are used to. Instead of being in an office setting, the Instructional Technology team was outside working together, with each member taking on a different section of weeds, which worked out well to clear them out in an efficient manner. </div>

    <div>Holly Owens, Instructional Technology Specialist, said “It’s important to me as a member of the UMBC community to reach out and be involved, even the smallest change makes a huge impact!” Owens had previously only done yard work at her home prior to volunteering at the TRRC and encourages others to go out and make a difference. </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>“I think the most fulfilling thing about this is experience is knowing that we made a difference and were able to help others.” said Owens. </div>
    <div><br></div>
    <div>Mariann Hawken, Instructional Technology Specialist, is no stranger to this type of community outreach. On a regular basis, she volunteers for her son’s bowling league, which provides a team experience with free equipment and coaching for disabled players. That same team experience was also present at the TRRC. Hawken said, "<span>It was a nice experience to volunteer, especially as a team."</span>

    <div>“Working together ensured we were able to get the job done and it gave our team a chance to do something that required a different kind of collaboration and cooperation.” said Hawken. </div>
    </div>

    <h4>"...they should find something they have interest and passion for and give their time." </h4>

    <div>Braxton-Lieber would love to have this type of service at the TRRC become a yearly commitment but also wants more DoIT employees to get involved anywhere. “There are so many nonprofits in Maryland that need the support,” said Braxton-Lieber. “They should find something they have interest in and passion for and give their time.”</div>

    <div>In a letter to the team, Dr. Helen Tuel, Founding Director at the TRRC, thanked the team for the amount of work they did around the center. Tuel said “Thank you for believing in the work we do and for giving the children in our care hopeful futures full of possibilities with much potential and brimming with success.”</div>

          <p><span>The Aspen Institute's Youth &amp; Engagement team launched an application recruiting an inaugural cohort of <strong>Youth Commissioners</strong> to advise the Aspen Institute’s <strong>National Commission on Social, Emotional, and Academic Development</strong>. The work of the Youth Commission, alongside the National Commission, has the potential to transform education and create more equitable, holistic, and effective systems for students. </span></p>
          <p><span> </span></p>
          <p><span>Young people, ages 14 to 22 years old, residing in the Washington Metropolitan region, who work well in group settings, think outside the box, and are civic-minded &amp; eager to engage with fellow youth around exploring complex issues are encouraged to apply.</span></p>

          <p>The turnaround time is TIGHT, with the first round cycle closing this <strong>Thursday, July 21<sup>st</sup></strong>.</p>

          <p><span>Over the course of the next two years, the Youth Commission will join the National Commission in exploring existing policy and practice relating to social, emotional, and academic development, while also taking active steps to improve upon the current state of social and emotional development in schools by recommending policies, programs, and strategies in a culminating report. Youth Commissioners will be compensated for their participation with a modest stipend. Travel expenses will also be covered.</span></p>

    <p>Dr. Robert Deluty, Associate Professor of Psychology and Associate Dean of the Graduate School, discussing about balancing work and life responsibilities at PROMISE AGEP’s 2015 Work-Life Balance seminar.</p>

    <p>PROMISE AGEP will be hosting its annual “Work-Life Balance Workshop: A Talk with Dr. Robert Deluty.” Dr. Deluty has been a professor of psychology for 36 years and served as the director of the clinical psychology doctoral program for 18 years. In addition to being a professor, Dr. Deluty is the Associate Dean of the Graduate School and a prolific poet.  He has written 51 books of poetry, all of which are available at the campus bookstore. His most recent collection,<u>Saved by Imagination and Humor</u>, was published in late July.</p>
    <div><span>In this seminar, Dr. Deluty will discuss about work-life balance, a topic that many people encounter as they begin their new academic year. He is a wonderful speaker and provides  words of wisdom and encouragement as you begin the new academic year ahead. </span></div>
