Properties/Relations in OWL/RDF

Clare Grasso

10:30-11:30 Monday, 2 May 2016, ITE346

OWL ontologies offer the means for modeling real-world domains by representing their high-level concepts, properties and interrelationships. These concepts and their properties are connected by means of binary relations. However, this assumes that the model of the domain is either a set of static objects and relationships that do not change over time, or a snapshot of these objects at a particular point in time. In general, relationships between objects that change over time (dynamic properties) are not binary relations, since they involve a temporal interval in addition to the object and the subject. Representing and querying information evolving in time requires careful consideration of how to use OWL constructs to model dynamic relationships and how the semantics and reasoning capabilities within that architecture are affected.

Click for acronyms every UMBC student should know!

  <Tagline>THFG</Tagline>

In a world where kids these days have shorthand texting words for everything, they come up with the craziest things. Keep reading for some acronyms that you should be aware of if you live at or go to UMBC. StAY3 in d@ N0 (translation: Be hip and stay updated to these phrases):

H8 WLKG 2 PAHB - I Hate Walking To Performing Arts and Humanities Building

Students love texting this to their friends when they have to walk to the Performing Arts and Humanities Building. Everyone dreads walking up three flights’ worth of stairs outside to walk up another three flights because they missed the elevator that takes two business days to arrive and leave. This phrase allows all your friends to know that you’re cool enough to have registered for a class in this new and clean building.

SEB - Some Everlasting Booty

Not to be confused with the Student Events Board, this phrase is all about celebrating some great booty out there. It may not be mine. It may not be yours. It might not even be his. But somewhere out there…it exists…forever.

THFG - Thank Hrabowski for God

We all know Hrabowski transcends this mortal realm. He is beyond God Himself. UMBC students pay homage to their glorious president with this phrase. We all know Hrabowski created God, the rightful prophet.

TGTG - True Grits Tastes Good

Students love the food on campus. Their favorite place is the dining hall so appropriately named by the grittiest of all: our doggie mascot. TGTG allows students to acknowledge that their dining hall is the best and comes as close to a five star restaurant like The Cheesecake Factory.

FAGMC - Fine Arts Gave Me Cancer

It’s no secret that the Fine Arts building has been under construction for some time. It was infested with asbestos for Hrabowski’s sake! Setting just one foot or nostril or armpit hair in there will immediately give you cancer that will surely but slowly kill you over a lifetime. Don’t forget to tell all your friends to start planning your funeral now!

TS8MCFA - That Squirrel Ate My Chick-Fil-A

Squirrels dominate this campus. Students make it well known with this phrase. The S is interchangeable with whatever the subject may be. For example, TFB8MCFA stands for That Fuck Boy Ate My Chick-Fil-A. It’s super easy. You just have to figure out who ate your goddamn fries.

IFTRANITA100LA&HASSCTTHTOofRCR - I Forgot To Register And Now I’m Taking All 100 Level Arts & Humanities and Social Science Classes Thanks To How the Office of the Registrar Conducts Registration

This one’s a mouth-full! Don’t you hate it how the time you sign up directly correlates with how many credits you have? More credits mean you can sign up earlier. If you have like -12 credits, it’s impossible to even start taking any classes you need. It’s a never-ending trap to keep you here for more than four years and feed the school more money. Take it from the guy who’s been here for eight years and still can’t get into a CHEM 102 lab. This phrase is used more often than not.

Next time you pick up your cellular or computing device, send one of these “trendy” phrases to your phriends (translation: friends)!

-Your Aunt

I want to gauge as many student's past and/or current experiences with the Shriver Center as possible--even students who have not done service-learning. Particularly, I want to better understand how the Shriver Center's campus presence might impact students' decision whether or not to become involved in service-learning at UMBC.
