So I'm sure if you follow our Facebook page you know that we've been posting about the Green Pledge, a list of things that SGA candidates running for office promise to do if they get elected into office. This is part of a greater plan to make UMBC a more sustainability-minded institution with a very involved student body and student government.

Spearheaded by the Eco Leadership Facilitators (ELFs) - and written by your's truly - this Pledge is truly the product of collaboration among the Eco orgs. Our organizations gave input on this document to create the product that is being signed by SGA candidates. I'm gratified that the process was so give-and-take, and that the orgs who endorse the Pledge are doing their parts to get it around and spread the word.

Follow our Facebook to see who else signs the Pledge! These future student leaders will be the way to the future of sustainability at UMBC, and they are an important way to make the change we want on campus.

We look forward to seeing what those elected, who have signed the Pledge, will do to help our cause and make change on campus!
Biologist Jeff Leips explains model organism research on Capitol Hill in support of federal funding

Federally-funded science researchers have tightened their belts in recent years, as budgets for federal research agencies have decreased in many core areas. Concerned at the prospect of future research funding cuts, particularly for model organism and basic research, the Coalition to Promote Research and Coalition for National Science Funding gathered scientists and representatives of funding agencies to present a Congressional Poster Exhibition and Reception.

Held on April 13, 2016 at the Russell Senate Office Building in Washington, D.C., the event gave legislators and their staff a greater understanding of the value of research currently supported by the federal government and the processes for selecting grant recipients. UMBC biological sciences professor Jeff Leips, a federally-funded scientist who uses the fruitfly (Drosophila) to study traits associated with aging, attended the event to discuss the importance of research using this workhorse model organism.

“Much of what we know of biology comes from model organisms,” Leips says. He explains that fruitflies share about 60 percent of their genes with humans, and about 75 percent of disease-causing genes in humans have a parallel gene in flies, so studying the tiny critters is a cost-effective, practical, and ethical way to learn about human disease. Labs that use model organisms also provide ample opportunities to train the next generation of scientists.

Leips spoke with Senate staffers at the meeting who were “very open to listening,” he says. While some of the onus is on politicians to take time to learn the intended purpose of research in context, Leips suggests, scientists and research institutions “could do more.” He recommends organizing similar events on university campuses and inviting local legislators. He also suggests helping scientists become more aware of how scientific language can have different meanings in a lay context, to prepare them for speaking with the media and general audiences.

To learn more about Jeff Leips’ experience at this event, read his post on the Genetic Society of America‘s blog.

Intern of the Week: Frank Monney for Biological Sciences

<Tagline>Learn about Frank's research experience at Uconn Health!</Tagline>

Name: Frank Monney

Internship, Co-op or Research Site: Uconn Health

Position Title: Research Intern

Major(s)/Minor(s): Biological Sciences

Expected Graduation Year: August 2016

Briefly describe your internship, co-op, or research opportunity, including your day-to-day tasks, responsibilities, and assignments.

As part of my research position at Uconn health, we had 4 days of research and a day of medical shadowing. I was working in the department of Molecular Biology and Biophysics in Dr. Korzhnev lab and my mentor was a second year graduate student Alex Rizzo. Briefly, my project consisted of finding the interaction between TLS DNA Polymerases and PCNA (Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen) which is a DNA-sliding clamp very involved in DNA replication processes. We used Rev1 as TLS polymerase and finding that interaction with PCNA would be a great target for drug design purposes because the majority of mutations in cells is caused by TLS polymerases. Every day, I would go my lab and grow bacteria tagged with our proteins of interest, then isolate and purify the proteins for NMR sampling.Adjusting the conditions in which the proteins were being grown, gave us a great deal of flexibility in order to determine the the true conditions that would allow that protein interaction.

Describe the process of obtaining your internship, research, or co-op opportunity.

To obtain my research, I attended a seminar at UMBC "How to get started in research". After that, they had a follow up meeting to talk about how to navigate the research page and how to find useful links. After that, I did my personal research and applied to a couple of research sites. I later went to the Career center to polish my resume, and get it approved for UMBCworks. I had also started contacting professors early in the process for recommendation letters which I received in a timely manner.

What have you enjoyed the most about your position or organization/company?

I really enjoyed the connections. Besides the amazing research experience and the eye-opening shadowing opportunities, I really enjoyed the connections both professional and casual. Through my experience at UConn Health, I shadowed Dr. Zempsky a doctor specialized in sickle cell anemia and pain management. At the end of the program, he said he would connect me with one of his colleague at John Hopkins University for possible research/shadowing opportunities. I also made some friends in Connecticut. In the lab I worked with, I met a first year medical student (Ted). He introduced me to his friends, we got to learn about one another and they were all willing to give me counsel.

How do you believe you have made an impact through your work?

The bigger picture of my project is hoping to being able to design better cancer therapies via cells that avoid chemoresistance. At the end of the summer rotation, we presented our projects at a poster presentation and I received some great feedback. Looking at the interaction between Rev1 and PCNA, we found the results that we expected. At Ph 7 and at different mole ratios we noticed that there is change in chemical environment around peaks of the proteins using NMR spectroscopy. Although I won't be able to work on my project this fall, I am incredibly proud of what I accomplished with the help of my amazing mentor, (Alex Rizzo), my PI, Dr Korzhnev. Moving forward in finding the true interaction site of the proteins, I know that I contributed something to this project and helped take one small yet significant step towards containing cancer/tumor growths.

What advice would you give to another student who is seeking an internship or similar experience?

For anyone looking to do something similar, I would say first and foremost, go with an open mind. It is amazing how much you can absorb when you leave your mind to be attracted to different things. As far of the research goes, attending the seminar at UMBC was of great help. Further down the application process, I would recommend contacting professors for recommendation letters very early. Through the whole process, be very thorough and persistent, don't take no for an answer and do not be discouraged. There is always someone that can provide guidance you at UMBC.

Like this story on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter!

Like the Career Center on Facebook

Follow us on Twitter and Instagram

#UMBCintern

Want to be the next Intern of the Week?
Open Letter From Faculty & Staff Supporting Academic Freedom

<Tagline>Want to add your name? Contact Kate at drabinsk@umbc.edu.</Tagline>

We, the undersigned faculty and staff at UMBC,
are writing to join the chorus of voices expressing concern about an incident
that occurred at this year’s URCAD Day on April 27, 2016. We also look forward
to joining the campus conversation moving forward about the importance of
academic freedom for all of us at UMBC. Many of us work closely with these
students as they develop their research questions, do their work, and prepare
high quality presentations for an interdisciplinary audience each April. We all
look forward to this day and its celebration of the best and brightest
independent researchers drawn from our impressive undergraduate student
population. We are so proud of the growth of URCAD over the past 20 years and
the central role it plays in encouraging inquiry at UMBC.

One of this year’s outstanding projects was
presented by Riley Auer and Hao Wang, who worked as part of the
interdisciplinary research group “Seeing Science” to produce “Illustrating the
Unseen: Analogy and Metaphor in an Ancient Gynecological Text.” In order to
communicate her research, Ancient Studies scholar Auer used a large
representation of internal reproductive organs drawn by INDS scholar
Wang at the center of their poster along with explanatory text. Wang's art was specifically designed to show the human body *as human.* The poster was
originally placed at the front of the University Center Ballroom as an exemplar
of the interdisciplinary work highlighted at URCAD. It was later moved to an alternate location and surrounded by several signs warning of content that
might be inappropriate for viewers under 17. This research presentation was, in
effect, sidelined by an NC-17 rating.

We are deeply concerned that research about
reproductive health is being interpreted as “adult” material. Those of us who
do research in this area, or who teach about gender and sexuality, are deeply
troubled that our research, and that of our students, should be isolated and
treated as if it is inappropriate in an academic setting. All research should
be valued and supported at UMBC, and the sidelining of Auer and Wang's work creates a
chilling effect on the research and teaching investments of many faculty and
    students at UMBC.

Our concern extends beyond those of us doing
this specific kind of research, however. Auer and Wang’s project was produced at a
research university under the guidance of faculty members tasked with training
the next generation of researchers. Their work would be accepted at any of our
professional conferences without question. Faculty need to have the latitude to
work with students on groundbreaking research—like Auer and Wang's—without worrying that
they, or ourselves, will be shamed or our research hidden. Students need to
learn, as they are meant to do at URCAD, what professional intellectual work
looks like. This incident challenges the tenets of academic freedom that are so
vital to intellectual life at the university, and it risks interrupting our
work with students as we train them as researchers who will produce the next
generation of knowledge for all of us.

We, the undersigned, are pleased that Dr.
Hrabowski moved quickly to apologize to these student researchers. We also look
forward to the opportunities promised by Dean Diane Lee and Dean Scott Casper
to discuss lessons learned from this incident. We also urge URCAD to produce a
statement that makes clear that academic freedom is at the core of its mission.
It is absolutely imperative for our students to hear from faculty, staff, and
administration that we support their research, wherever it may take them. We
know that we, their faculty and staff supporters, are excited to see where they
    go.

Sincerely,
