Survey results - Criteria for promotion to Adjunct III

  <Tagline>Responses from current adjunct faculty</Tagline>

Results are in from the AFAC survey requested by the Faculty Affairs Committee, on criteria for promotion to Adjunct III. NOTE: The response rate was so low that the survey is invalid as a vote by adjunct faculty on adjunct preferences.* The low response rate may reflect lack of enthusiasm for surveys, for surveys requested by non-adjunct faculty, or for exceptional promotions rather than broader-based improvements (pay raises). That said, here are the trends that did show up in responses:

Areas of consensus:

On the questions:

Question
    1. Overwhelming
majority agree that candidates for Adjunct III must have the qualifications of
    an Adjunct II.

Question 3 (Option B). Strong majority
agree that there should be no minimum time in grade after Adjunct II, for promotion to Adjunct III.

Question
    4. Solid
majority agree on teaching record, as established by in-class observation and
    SCEQs, as a criterion.

Question
    5. Solid
majority agree that criteria for teaching should be consistent with those for
    candidates for promotion to the
rank of Senior Lecturer at UMBC: “A Senior Lecturer is expected to
demonstrate excellence in teaching and teaching
leadership, which may include development of new curriculum, teaching
    innovations, scholarship, and/or creative works.”

On qualifications of current adjuncts:

A
solid majority of responders DO have 1) memberships in academic or community organizations and
records of service in same; 2) other community service and/or research; 3) evidence
    of professional development; 4) evidence of service to UMBC on campus or off;
    5) awards, honors, or prizes; and 6) evidence of productivity in a job or
    profession off campus.

Note:
for every category of professional qualification except one, responders
indicated that they "Expect to have
in the future." The one exception was the category "evidence of
productivity in a job or profession off campus." (In other words, responders
not already working elsewhere do not expect to engage in a profession other
than college teaching, or do not expect to leave UMBC, or both.)

An overwhelming majority of responders do NOT have a record
of elective office at any level, although two responders do.

Areas of
    disagreement:

Question 2
    (Option A). Wide-ranging

Fall 2016 Registration - Reminder

  <Tagline>Schedule your advising appointment today!</Tagline>

It is time to start preparing for Fall 2016 registration. All students must meet with an advisor to receive registration clearance for fall classes. You may view the registration dates on the Registrar's website. In order to register on this date, you must meet with an advisor prior to this date to get registration clearance. Students do not need special clearance to register for summer classes. Summer registration opens for all students on March 21st.

Please read the instructions below for information about how to sign up for your advising appointment.

If you are currently enrolled in LRC 99, MATH 106, or do not have a math placement, you will be advised by the Office of Academic and Pre-Professional Advising in the Academic Services Building, Room 103.

Prior to your appointment:
1. Please review your scheduling options by looking over the schedule of classes, available starting on March 28th, on the UMBC website HERE.
2. Review your degree audit – major and general education/foundation requirements, so that you are aware of the courses still needed to complete your degree requirements. Learn more about your degree audit HERE.
3. Review the sample 4-year plan for your major to determine where you are in the recommended sequence of courses. HERE
4. Check the Gateway requirements for your major and determine where you are in relation to the completion of this requirement. HERE
5. Come prepared to your appointment with a list of courses you intend to take in Fall 2016.

After your advising appointment, you will have clearance to register for classes. However, you will not be able to register until your assigned registration time. Your registration time is the earliest date and time that you may register for classes. For information about registration times, please go HERE, or check the banner on the top of your myUMBC page. If you have not attended an advising appointment, you will not be able to register when your registration time occurs.

If you have a hold on your account, it is still important that you sign up for an advising appointment. Meeting with an advisor in advance of registration means that you will not have to worry about getting advising clearance once your hold is lifted.

All Majors - Gateway not Yet Completed
Students majoring in Pre-Computer Science/Computer Science, Pre-Computer Engineering/Computer Engineering, Pre-Mechanical Engineering, Pre-Chemical Engineering, and Pre-Engineering must meet with an academic advisor in the office of Undergraduate Student Services in the College of Engineering and Information Technology. Location: ITE Building Rooms 202-206. Phone: 410-455-3096. Advising staff: Josh Abrams (josh.abrams@umbc.edu), Anne Arey (annearey@umbc.edu), and Emily Stephens (eastephe@umbc.edu).
