UMBC’s hosts 10th Annual Arts Integration Conference hosted by UMBC Dept. of Education, focuses on social justice

Nearly 200 educators, students, artists, and administrators attended the 10th Annual Arts Integration Conference on Saturday, March 5 at UMBC. The event was hosted by UMBC’s Department of Education in cooperation with The Shriver Center. This year’s conference, titled The Heart of Arts: Building Community through Arts Integration, focused on how integrating visual arts, dance, music, and theatre into P-12 curricula can help build cultural awareness, enhance community engagement, and provide opportunities for students to become advocates for social justice.

The conference was developed for P-12 teachers, teacher candidates, youth leaders, and others who work with students through the arts. The event included an interactive general session, 14 hands-on workshops, and an art show where conference attendees interacted with Baltimore City student artists.

Many UMBC alumni participated in the conference, including presentations and remarks by Kevin Maxwell ’02, Ph.D., language, literacy, and culture, CEO of Prince George’s County Public Schools, and Margaret Weber ’12, M.A.T., art education, New York City Public Schools visual arts teacher. Weber shared best practices for producing engaging lessons that address cultural relevancy through her interactive presentation “Hallway as Canvas: Bringing Graffiti Art Techniques into the Classroom.” Other presenters included Fabiola Rodriguez ’16, M.A.T., and her UMBC PDS mentor, Sara Murphy.


Frank Anderson, assistant director of The Choice Program at UMBC, led an interactive general session titled “Giving Students a Choice through Socially Engaged Art.” Choice Program youth shared how their arts-based visual, music, and dance projects have helped them engage with their community, including a shared mosaic created with the Baltimore City Police Department and an audio recording of a community sound collage. Meghann Shutt, assistant director of the Shriver Center Peaceworker Program, and several Shriver Center Peaceworkers provided readings from Voices of a People’s History. 

Many UMBC interns and students, UMBC Professional Development School (PDS) teachers, teachers from six Maryland school districts and Washington, D.C., and students and faculty from the University of Maryland, College Park and Towson University participated in the conference.

“I believe our record-breaking attendance this year was due to the relevance of the topic. Teachers understand the importance of building community in their classrooms, their schools, and the neighborhoods in which their students live,” explains Barbara Bourne, clinical instructor and director of elementary education and arts coordinator in the education department. “Conference presenters demonstrated how the arts – music, drama, visual art, and dance – are powerful tools for building communities from within and for linking one community to another. Hopefully, participants discovered new strategies for using arts integration as a means to connect their students with others in their classes, schools, neighborhoods, and global communities.”

With registration coming up around the corner, MBC News did not hesitate to get down into the nitty gritty and bring you a skin-curling story. A student, who will remain unnamed for safety purposes, recently faced his downfall this past semester. During the Spring 2016 Registration period, the student failed to contact his advisor and set up a meeting in which a block on his account would be lifted. Instead, he called his advisor days before Spring move-in, asking to remove his registration block at the last minute. Hurriedly, the student signed up for whatever classes were open, one of which was Ancient Studies 666. He thought it would be cool to take this class as it seemed to knock out his culture credit- which he still needed. Or maybe it was about old-timey cults. Or a culture class about ancient cults.

Either way, whatever he signed up for was neither a culture credit or a class about lots of cults. According to the student, the class had started out normal. There was a syllabus handed out during class and they even played an awkward ice-breaking game. But now that he thinks back, the piece of paper might not have been written in English and the ice breaker could have been some odd ritual. The student thought “the teacher was just giving [him] a real hands-on approach.” From there, the class escalated. The student claims that he had to catch wild UMBC squirrels and slice their eyes in a pentagram while chanting a top hit from 2007. Another time they drank the library pond water while dancing to Glee’s version of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing”.

“It just felt like I was hanging out with my class. It was only weird cuz the teacher was there too.” In a last statement issued before he disappeared for a few weeks: “It’s not until you’re tied up to the top of a moving car, buck naked, sucking a duck, and pouring bleach into your belly button when it occurs to you that you’ve actually joined a cult.”

Chuck Bieberich, professor of biological sciences, has been named The Herbert Bearman Foundation Chair in Entrepreneurship for 2016-2019.

The Herbert Bearman Foundation Chair recognizes and supports outstanding teaching skills, an interest in entrepreneurship, and a strong record of scholarship in entrepreneurial studies or a field related to entrepreneurship. The three-year endowed position will enable Bieberich to offer workshops and related activities to encourage entrepreneurial approaches to expanding research support and commercialization opportunities for faculty.

“For me, being appointed the Bearman Chair is not just a tremendous honor, it’s also a great opportunity to foster entrepreneurialism among my faculty colleagues. A lot of the things we already do to keep our labs running mirror those that are essential to running a business,” says Bieberich.

Bieberich will use his time as Bearman Chair to encourage faculty in the College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences (CNMS) and across UMBC to pursue entrepreneurial opportunities. In his own research, he plans to expand the application of the biomarker discovery technology in the growing field of personalized medicine.

Nicholas Rogers, who graduated in December 2015 and worked in the Blaney Lab, was selected to receive a 2016 National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP) Fellowship. Nick's proposal focused on using excitation-emission matrices (EEMs) of dissolved organic matter (DOM) to identify leaking wastewater infrastructure in urban settings.  His selection was based on his demonstrated potential to contribute to strengthening the vitality of the U.S. science and engineering enterprise.

By sharing stories about his time editing and gripping in Hollywood, California and his decision to start his own television production company in Baltimore, Neil will convey valuable lessons about how to sell yourself properly.
