Using DNA Sequences to Determine the Geographic Origins of Agriculturally Important Invasive Leafmining Flies

The increased global movement of people and goods has resulted in introduction of agricultural pests into new areas. Understanding the patterns and processes of colonization by introduced species is crucial in planning interventions and management strategies. However, determining the origin and colonization patterns of invasive species can be difficult. Molecular markers such as DNA sequence data can help determine the history of movement by an invasive species. Liriomyza huidobrensis is a leafmining fly that feeds within leaf tissue of crops, including potatoes and beans. Although native to South America, it has spread throughout the world and is of great concern. Understanding the origin and pathways of dispersion can determine the means of spread, possibly leading to the development of interception and control programs. We analyzed 2125 base pairs of mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase genes (COI & COII) in a phylogeographic approach to uncover distribution of genetic variation of L. huidobrensis. Our phylogeographic analysis of mitochondrial COI and COII found substantial geographic structure within L. huidobrensis in its native range, but almost none within and between invasive populations around the world. The data suggest that the invasive populations trace to the Peru/Ecuador region. We are collecting additional data to test this hypothesis.

One sensor, RestEaze, non-intrusively monitors a person’s sleep quality in a home setting by tracking leg movements, and may help to diagnose restless leg syndrome, ADHD or cardiac issues.
The other sensor, Inviz, is a gesture recognition system that helps people with limited mobility complete everyday tasks, such as turning on the TV or a light, and be prepared for emergencies, with the ability to call 911. It uses low-cost flexible sensors that can be embedded in clothing or other fabric, and is supported by NSF and Microsoft.

Title: “The Hardest Part was Writing the Songs, but the Easiest Part was Motivation”: Music-Centered Pedagogy in the College Composition Classroom

This qualitative teacher-researcher study examines the benefits of providing students in a first-year English composition course opportunities to use music of their own choosing in two major ways: 1) as the inspiration for and subject of alphabetic texts, and 2) as a major element of multimodal compositions. Through the presentation and discussion of classroom artifacts, student reflections, and field notes, I demonstrate that encouraging students to use music in composing assignments helped instill in them a sense of motivation and confidence that not only translated into a greater sense of self- efficacy in relation to classroom assignments, but also resulted in students’ increased desire to engage in self-sponsored composing activities. In addition to exploring the positive effects the integration of music into a composition class had on students’ motivation, I reveal how music-centered lesson plans and assignments can be used to help students consider how texts are assembled and organized, and enable them to identify and apply rhetorical terms and concepts. Additionally, urging students to use or create music as part of multimodal compositions can lead to collaborative composing experiences, opportunities for students to experiment with new modes of composing, chances for students to focus more on global composing concerns than on sentence-level ones, and occasions for students to both pose and solve complex rhetorical problems in creative ways. Though I do not argue that incorporating music into a composition course is the best or only way to teach composition, I do suggest that instructors consider the potential benefits incorporating music into composition pedagogy can offer.

Dissertation Committee:

Christine Mallinson, Chair
Lucille McCarthy, Co-Chair
Cheryl North
Craig Saper
Helen Burgess

Date and Location:
April 6, 2016 at 2:15 p.m.
LLC Conference Room, 422 Sherman Hall A

The public is welcome to observe.
