Announcing the Final Examination of Anissa Sorokin Dissertation Defense
Title: “The Hardest Part was Writing the Songs, but the Easiest Part was Motivation”: Music-Centered Pedagogy in the College Composition Classroom

This qualitative teacher-researcher study examines the benefits of providing students in a first-year English composition course opportunities to use music of their own choosing in two major ways: 1) as the inspiration for and subject of alphabetic texts, and 2) as a major element of multimodal compositions. Through the presentation and discussion of classroom artifacts, student reflections, and field notes, I demonstrate that encouraging students to use music in composing assignments helped instill in them a sense of motivation and confidence that not only translated into a greater sense of self- efficacy in relation to classroom assignments, but also resulted in students’ increased desire to engage in self-sponsored composing activities. In addition to exploring the positive effects the integration of music into a composition class had on students’ motivation, I reveal how music-centered lesson plans and assignments can be used to help students consider how texts are assembled and organized, and enable them to identify and apply rhetorical terms and concepts. Additionally, urging students to use or create music as part of multimodal compositions can lead to collaborative composing experiences, opportunities for students to experiment with new modes of composing, chances for students to focus more on global composing concerns than on sentence-level ones, and occasions for students to both pose and solve complex rhetorical problems in creative ways. Though I do not argue that incorporating music into a composition course is the best or only way to teach composition, I do suggest that instructors consider the potential benefits incorporating music into composition pedagogy can offer.

I often drive home and think "I am so lucky to live here". 

My roommate and I have lived in our 3 bedroom 1.5 bath townhouse for the past year and we now have the master room available. I am a UMBC Alumni (23) and she is a student at University of Maryland, Baltimore (22). Townhouse is located in Heritage Hills. Our block of the neighborhood is very safe and quiet. We have wonderfully friendly neighbors who have been great to us. Living in the neighborhood includes access to community pool and fitness room. 

Our townhouse is newly renovated with all new appliances and bathrooms.  We have a semi-private backyard with patio, which we enjoy in the warmer weather. Easy parking and convenient drive to UMBC or City. I can tell you all the secret ways to bypass 695/95 traffic.We do not have cable, but have smart TVs. Wifi, water and BGE utilities are approximately $50 a month.

Starting this summer, the campus will transition from TurningPoint 5 to TurningPoint Cloud as our new clicker software. During this time, all Division of Information Technology controlled labs and lecture hall computers will be updated with the latest software. Turning Technologies, our current clicker vendor, announced in early 2015 that the TurningPoint 5 software would no longer be supported as of June 2016.


The Instructional Technology Team conducted a comparative analysis of clicker options available for the campus, and deployed a survey to the campus community last fall. In November, the results were shared at a Faculty Town Hall. Based on the feedback from both students and faculty, DoIT and the Instructional Technology team decided it was best to stay with our current clicker vendor, and migrate the campus to TurningPoint Cloud.


By the start of Summer Session I, Blackboard will also be updated with a new integration, which will allow students to create Turning Accounts and register their clicker information within the Learning Management System (LMS). This new integration requires that students have a license code in order to register their clicker information on Blackboard. Students who purchased a clicker prior to Summer 2016 will receive an email containing a license code. Students who have not yet purchased clickers will be able to choose from one of these bundle options in the UMBC Bookstore.  


Faculty will also need to sign up for Turning Accounts in order to gain access to the TurningPoint Cloud download. To check system requirements for TurningPoint Cloud please view the PC or Mac release notes. If you have questions or concerns regarding the software download, please submit an RT ticket.

Mellon Foundation and administered by the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation (WW).

The Career Enhancement Fellowships for Junior Faculty aims to increase the presence of minority Junior Faculty (African Americans, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, Hispanics, Native Americans and Native Alaskans), and other junior faculty members committed to eradicating racial disparities, and breaking down stereotypes and promoting cross-racial understanding in core fields in the arts and sciences. The objective of the fellowship program is to aid the scholarly research and intellectual growth of junior faculty (men and women) and improve their chances for moving successfully towards tenure by offering support for twelve months of research and writing.

MacManus will spend her fellowship year working on her book manuscript. GWST and UMBC are excited to see the results of her research, and we applaud her achievement!
