Below is a partial run-down of stipends (teaching pay) for adjunct faculty in the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at UMBC. Stipends are for teaching a 3-credit course per semester, except as noted otherwise. Based on information received and public record. Corrections, clarifications, additions welcome.
AMST. When I became adjunct II, it went up to $3,800. That's where it is now.
ANCS. Happy to help! $3,500 for a 3-credit course, for an Adjunct I. Stipend may be split between two departments.
Asia Studies. In my department pay is $4000 per semester for adjunct faculty. Hope this helps.
DANC. [From the chair:] “The Dance Department pays an average of $3300 for a 3 credit course, depending on the meeting pattern for the course.”
ECON. The stipends vary depending on course level. Basic accounting stipend is $3,600 per section. More for Intermediate or Advanced Accounting.
Education. Stipend for Adjunct II may be $5,000 per course.
Emergency Health Services. Minimum stipend for adjunct faculty is $3,000.
ENGL. Stipend for a 3-credit composition course is $3,300 for Adjunct I and $3,600 for Adjunct II. One 4-credit course (English 110) pays $4,300 for Adjunct I and $4,700 for Adjunct II. No differentiation for PhD or for teaching upper-level courses. Stipends for some literature classes in ENGL have differed from stipends in writing sections.
HIST. Stipend varies with rank of adjunct. Affiliated Adjunct Professors in History may be the best-paid category of adjunct faculty in CAHSS. [From the chair:] "Adjunct pay in History varies by rank of adjunct. Minimum stipend is 4500 for a three credit course."
Linguistics. $3,500 per course in Linguistics. May be higher for Adjunct II.
Modern Languages. Grad students have priority in teaching but lower stipend because their tuition is waived/free, and the stipend covers just living expenses. Grad students have mandatory health insurance. Stipend for Adjunct II may be up to $3,700 for a 4-credit course.
Music. Instrumental music classes may be one credit hour. Adjunct stipend may go down to $954.45 per class. Adjunct stipend for a 3-credit course $3,500.
PHIL. [From the chair:] “The Philosophy Dept. pays all Adjunct I’s $4,000 and all Adjunct II’s $4,300 per course.”
Psychology. Adjunct stipend is $3,500 or $4,000 per course. Difference for rank or PhD not known.
SAHAP. Adjunct faculty varies with PhD or MA. Stipend for Adjunct II may be $4,500 per course. Adjunct titles in SAHAP include Adjunct Assistant Professor, Assistant Professor PT, Lecturer PT, and Instructor PT.
