We're one of UMBC's oldest club sports programs. UMBC Fencing seeks to provide knowledge and training of the Olympic sport of fencing, in all three disciplines. No previous training or knowledge is required!
Our goal is to develop athletes and compete in collegiate tournaments both locally and nationally, as well as foster a love of the sport for those who do not wish to compete. All our officers and captains are dedicated to sharing their love and knowledge of the sport with anyone who is interested.
Our current officers can be reached by email at UMBCFencing@gmail.com
We are also active on both Facebook and Instagram (@UMBCFencing), periodically updating both with what the team has been up to.
Please reach out with any questions or if you are interested in joining or being added to the email list!
WHAT IS FENCING?
Fencing is an armed combat sport, consisting of three different weapon types, foil, epee, and sabre. Points are scored by making contact with certain points on your opponent.
Foil is one of the two stabbing based weapons. The target area is the chest of the opponent. The blade itself is flexible and has the smaller bell-style guard.
Epee is the other stabbing based weapon. Its target area is the entire body, which usually causes the matches to be a bit longer. The weapon has a thicker blade and the large bell guard.
Sabre is the slashing weapon. Everything from the waist up, except for hands is a target, and it moves the fastest of all the classes. The weapon has a slightly shorter blade, and a guard that resembles a Calvary sword.
