The Even Start Family Literacy Program is a program that works with parents in Baltimore City who are working to improve their English language skills and who have children between the ages of 3 and 7. The parents take English classes at one of our two sites (Graceland Park ES/MS and John Ruhrah ES/MS), and we have an Early Childhood class for three year olds at one of our sites (Graceland Park). We could use volunteers either in the Adult English classes, or in the Early Childhood class, but presently there is a greater need for volunteers in the English classroom (to work with parents need one-on-one practice).
Volunteers do not need to be available for the entire day of the program; even if someone can come in for just one hour one day a week to work with a parent on their English skills (or to volunteer in the children’s classroom), that would be a tremendous help and would benefit our students.
The schedule at the Graceland Park site is:
8:30am – 12pm Early Childhood class & Adult English class
12 – 12:30pm lunch
12:30 – 1:45pm Early Childhood class continues
The schedule at the John Ruhrah site is:
8:45am – 12:15pm Adult English class
Both schools are located in Southeast Baltimore City. John Ruhrah’s address is 701 Rappolla Street, Baltimore MD 21224. Graceland Park’s address is 6300 O’Donnell Street, Baltimore MD 21224.
