Dr. Wilson is a computational biologist at Arizona State University. She will explain how her research team traces the evolution of sex chromosomes (X and Y), studies medical conditions related to sex chromosomes, and examines why mutation rates differ between males and females. Her focus is on mammals, but she is also curious about the sex-biased biology of flies, worms, lizards, and plants.
Following the 30-minute lecture, students may ask Dr. Wilson about her research, her career path, and what advice she has for those interested in scientific research.
We invite students able to stay longer to join the speaker for lunch at 12:00. At 1:30 pm, we are offering a tour at the National Library of Medicine, which houses digital medical resources, the Visible Human Project, and the History of Medicine collections and exhibits. Undergraduate students attending the lecture last year told us that they really enjoyed the NLM tour.
We are hoping to have a close-to-final headcount for the lecture, lunch, and NLM tour by March 15.
