Here is the email our speaker, Bridget Russel, sent to the SWE and AIChE board after the workshop. Definitely check out her beneficial links! Feel free to also re-watch the workshop recording YoutTube video that is linked below.
From Bridget Russell:
Thanks so much for having me! You guys were a great bunch and did an awesome job with the design challenge questions. Also, great questions from everyone at the end.
Here are a couple of links to things I talked about:
1. Bleeding Edge Documentary on Netflix: https://www.netflix.com/title/80170862
2. Pelvic Organ Prolapse and changes within the FDA: Two interesting articles:
a. Johnson and Johnson getting sued: https://www.medtechintelligence.com/news_article/jj-must-pay-344-million-for-marketing-of-pelvic-mesh-in-california-case/
b. FDA removes all devices from the market: https://www.medtechintelligence.com/news_article/fda-orders-boston-scientific-and-coloplast-to-remove-all-remaining-vaginal-mesh-products-from-u-s-market/
3. Certifications to Check out:
You should be able to take these now (with minimal or no experience at a company). Check to see if your university will help pay or if they have student membership options. Even just being a member (and not taking the exam) is super helpful – there are a million webinars you can take or you can connect with others through the different chapters (a great way to meet ppl).
a. CAPM: Certified Associate in Project Management: https://www.pmi.org/certifications/types/certified-associate-capm
b. CQIA: Quality Improvement Associate: https://asq.org/cert/quality-improvement-associate
c. CSSYB: Six Sigma Yellow Belt: https://asq.org/cert/six-sigma-yellow-belt
d. Solidworks: https://www.solidworks.com/solidworks-certification-program
4. Personality (self-awareness tests) to check out:
Same thing with these – no experience needed and see if the university will pay or if you can get a student discount.
a. Myers Briggs: https://www.myersbriggs.org/my-mbti-personality-type/mbti-basics/
b. Disc: https://www.mydiscprofile.com/en-us/
c. True Colors: https://truecolorsintl.com/the-four-color-personalities/
5. Statistics Programs to learn and get better with – this will totally help in most engineering careers (especially any manufacturing industry):
See if your university uses one of these and just go start using it. A lot of times they have demos you can do to learn! Super helpful. Or think of something in real life that you want to look… for example sports statistics or coronavirus or wine. Whatever!
